7 th Grade Math Name Unit 2 Proportional Relationships Date Homeroom Planning a Road Trip: Trip Planner For your final project, you will take on the role of a student planning a summer road trip for you and your family. You will need to choose destinations and a vehicle to rent, determine the cost of various expenses, and decide how much money needs to be put in your budget for your road trip. You will apply your knowledge of unit rates, proportional relationships, and percents to set up and solve proportions related to your road trip. You will be required to show your work, explain your reasoning, and defend the accuracy of your answers in writing. Step 1: Plan your route. You may only visit cities that are included on the given map. Choose which 3 cities you will be visiting during your summer vacation. Specify both the city and the state. Starting City Chicago, IL City #1 City #2 City #3 Step 2: Using a ruler, draw a straight line connecting each city you will be visiting. (Draw a straight line from Chicago to City #1. Then, draw a straight line from City #1 to City #2, etc.) Step 3: Using a ruler, measure the length of the line connecting each city in your trip. ROUND EACH DISTANCE TO THE NEAREST QUARTER INCH. Fill out the following table: Starting City Ending City Distance on Map (in inches) Chicago, IL Chicago, IL Step 4: Use the scale on the map to write a ratio of distance on map to distance in real life. Your ratio should be written as a fraction. Be sure to include units.
Step 5: Calculate the distance of each leg of your trip using the ratio you just found. Set up a proportion and cross multiply to find the distance in real life between each of the cities. ROUND TO THE NEAREST MILE. List 2 Cities and Distance in Inches Proportion Show Work HERE. Distance in Miles Step 6: Find the total distance traveled during your road trip. Total Number of Miles Traveled =
Your family has decided to rent a vehicle for your road trip. It is your job to determine which vehicle you should rent. You have 6 choices. Step 7: Calculate the gas mileage (MPG - miles per gallon) of each vehicle above. Show your work! Ford Mustang Smart Car Dodge Ram Honda Odyssey Chevy Tahoe Jeep Wrangler Step 8: Write a short paragraph explaining which vehicle you will rent and why. Step 9: Calculate how much it would cost to drive your choice of vehicle during your summer road trip. Show your work and include any explanation necessary below.
Step 10: Calculate how much fuel would be required to drive your choice of vehicle during your summer road trip. Show your work and include any explanation necessary below. Step 11: How long will you spend in each city? City 1: City 2: City 3: Days Spent Sightseeing = Step 12: You can travel 800 miles in 1 day. Calculate the number of days you will spend driving from city to city. (This does not include the days you will spend sightseeing.) Leg of Road Trip: Show your work here: Number of Days Spent DRIVING: Chicago to City 1: City 1 to City 2: City 2 to City 3: City 3 to Chicago: Days Spent Driving + Days Spent Sight Seeing = Total Days of Vacation
Step 13: You will need a hotel room for every day of your vacation except the last. Hotel Rating Cost per Night $45 $55 $75 $200 $300 Create a table showing the number of nights you will spend in each type of hotel and the amount spent on each type of hotel. Destination Hotel Rating Number of Days Cost per Night Total Cost City 1: City 2: City 3: Sales Tax: Assume that the sales tax added on your hotel room is 5% in City 1, 8% in City 2, and 7.25% in City 3. Calculate the sales tax that will be added to the total cost of each hotel stay. Show your work. Hotel Stay: Cost (pre-tax) Sales Tax Rate City 1 5% Show your work HERE: Total Cost including Sales Tax City 2 8% City 3 7.25% Total Money Spent on Hotels =
Step 14: For each day you spend driving, you will eat 3 meals. You may choose where you eat your meals. Fast Food Restaurant $5.50 Nice Restaurant $10.00 Fancy Restaurant $25.00 Total Days of Vacation X 3 Meals per Day = Meals Type of Restaurant Number of Meals Cost per Meal Total Cost Tip your servers! Assume that for all meals in a Nice Restaurant you will tip your server 15% of the total cost. For all meals in a Fancy Restaurant you will tip your server 20% of the total cost. (Fast Food Restaurants do not require a tip). Calculate the amount that you will spend on tips and add it to your food costs. Type of Total Cost Amount Restaurant (without tip) of Tip Nice 15% Show your work HERE: Total Cost with Tip Fancy 20% Total Money Spent on Food = Step 15: Your rental car will cost $60 per day plus 30 cents per mile. Calculate the cost for renting the vehicle for the entire trip. Show your work below and include any explanation necessary below. Total Money Spent on Rental Car =
TOTAL COST OF SUMMER ROAD TRIP FUEL HOTEL FOOD RENTAL CAR TOTAL COST OF ROAD TRIP = Final Reflection: Now that you have planned your summer road trip, you will answer the questions below. Make your answers as thorough, thoughtful, and specific as possible. Clearly justify your reasoning in your written responses. You may type and print your responses and attach them to your trip planner, or handwrite them on paper to attach. Be sure to answer all 4 of the questions below. 1. Of the four major expenses listed above (fuel, hotel, food, and rental car), which amount do you think is the MOST accurate and realistic? Explain why. 2. Of the four major expenses listed above (fuel, hotel, food, and rental car), which amount do you think is the LEAST accurate and realistic. Explain why. 3. Do you think that this is a realistic estimate for your trip s budget? Explain why or why not. If not, how can you make it more realistic? 4. In real life, what factors could potentially change the cost of your trip? Explain your thinking for each.
