Substitute Teachers 8 Rule 505-2-.18 of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission requires the following: As a minimum, each substitute teacher shall hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. Any absence or vacancy that lasts 46 or more consecutive days in a school year shall be filled with a certified, in-field teacher, except in situations where longer periods of time are required by state or federal law. Substitute teachers who hold only a high school diploma or GED certificate shall not work in any one classroom more than ten consecutive days. Prior to substituting, and before being placed on the substitute teacher roster, the local school system shall provide four hours of substitute teacher training. (Those with a current or expired Georgia teaching certificate are required to attend only a portion of this training). Hall County also requires individuals to interview with a local school principal and be recommended for substitute teaching. Associate Superintendent DATE: August 9, 2007 SUBJECT: Substitute Teacher Orientation Thank you for your interest in the Hall County School System and for your desire to become a substitute teacher. Perhaps no single responsibility provides more challenge, more uncertainty, and ultimately, more personal satisfaction than that of a substitute teacher. Requirements to Substitute Teach Interview with a Hall County principal and be recommended for substitute training Attend a substitute teacher orientation session Substitute Teacher Training The orientation program, which is approximately four hours in length, is designed to provide information relative to the responsibilities associated with being a substitute teacher. Below please find the schedule for the 2005-06 school year. August 9, 2007 January 10, 2008 September 6, 2007 February 7, 2008 October 4, 2007 March 6, 2008 November 1, 2007 April 3, 2008 December - None May 1, 2008 Training will be held at the Hall County School System Central Office, located at 711 Green Street in Gainesville. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 9:00. Individuals Exempt from a Portion of the Workshop Those having attended a substitute teacher workshop sponsored by another Georgia school district or Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA) need only attend the first half of the Hall County substitute program if verification is provided that this training has been completed elsewhere. Those holding a current or expired professional Georgia teaching certificate need only attend the first half of the Hall County substitute program if a copy of the teaching certificate is provided to the school system. Documents to Bring to the Workshop A copy of your transcript, diploma, or GED certificate (if you did not include this information with your original substitute teaching application). Two documents to establish your employment eligibility (U. S. passport, driver's license, original social security card, or certified birth certificate). Substitute Paraprofessionals 10 Prior authorization must be obtained from the Associate Superintendent for Personnel before the services of a substitute paraprofessional may be utilized. Under certain circumstances, the initial request may be verbal; however, a written request must follow.
