Preparing for the FUTURE is like planning a road trip. You need to know where you re going and what you ll do if you hit an unexpected bump in the road. What you ll find in this brochure what would happen if... You lived longer than expected... pg 3 The stock market declined at just the wrong time... pg 4 Your taxable accounts don t cut it... pg 5 Inflation eroded your purchasing power... pg 6 You died unexpectedly... pg 7 Your financial needs change... pg 8 The Preference Premier variable annuity is issued by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. All other variable annuities are issued by MetLife Investors Insurance Company, MetLife Investors USA Insurance Company and in New York, only by First MetLife Investors Insurance Company. All are MetLife companies and are referred to collectively and singly as MetLife throughout this brochure. This material is authorized for distribution only when preceded or accompanied by a prospectus for a MetLife insurance company variable annuity. Depending on the state in which you live and on your specific variable annuity product, some features described in this brochure may not be available. Please consult with your financial professional. What is a variable annuity? In simplest terms, a variable annuity is a long-term contract between you and an insurance company in which the insurance company makes periodic lifetime payments to you. A variable annuity contains investment options that have the potential to grow and insurance features that offer protection, such as living and death benefits. Although a variable annuity may be an appropriate choice for some people as part of an overall retirement portfolio, it is not suitable for everyone. You should speak to your financial professional to discuss whether a variable annuity is right for you. Please read the prospectus for complete details before investing. To provide the investment and insurance-related benefits, variable annuities contain certain fees, including contract fees, a mortality and expense and administration charge (or separate account charge), and variable investment option charges and expenses. Optional living and death benefit riders carry additional charges and must be elected when the contract is issued. Like most investments, variable annuity contracts will fluctuate in value and may be impacted by market declines, even when an optional protection benefit rider is elected. Variable annuities: Are one of the only investments you can buy that offer income for life, no matter how long you live. Offer investment options to help you diversify and grow your purchase payments on a tax-deferred basis. 1 This may help you keep pace with inflation. Offer a variety of optional living and death benefit riders that can help grow and protect immediate or future income and help provide for your loved ones, regardless of market conditions. Give you the flexibility to withdraw portions of your account value if you choose. You can use the money as an ongoing source of income or withdraw it periodically, as unexpected financial needs arise. Variable annuities are long-term investments. As a result, if you take withdrawals too soon, a withdrawal charge may apply. Withdrawals of taxable amounts are subject to ordinary income tax and a 10% Federal income tax penalty may apply if made prior to age 59½. Withdrawals will also reduce the living and death benefits and account value. Please see the prospectus for complete details. Guarantees apply to certain insurance and annuity products, including optional benefits, (not securities, variable or investment advisory products) and are subject to product terms, exclusions and limitations and the insurer s claims-paying ability and financial strength. 1 If you are buying a variable annuity to fund a qualified retirement plan or IRA, you should do so for the variable annuity s features and benefits other than tax deferral. In such cases, tax deferral is not an additional benefit of the variable annuity. References throughout this material to tax advantages, such as tax deferral and tax-free transfers, are subject to this consideration. 1

You can be prepared. You re in the driver s seat. As you look to the future, you may aspire to live a certain lifestyle in retirement. Whether you choose a lifestyle that is challenging and invigorating or carefree and relaxed, you will want one that is at least comparable to the one you live today and one that is free of financial worries. Don t worry. You are in the driver s seat. With planning and assistance from your financial professional, you can take control of your future, help prepare for the uncertainties as well as the possibilities and live retirement the way you want. A variable annuity can help. But security in retirement doesn t happen automatically. It takes planning. And the foresight to protect your retirement income from the big IFs in life the uncertainties that can cause you to go down the wrong road. The specific features, benefits, charges and expenses of the variable annuity are described in the prospectus for the product and are summarized in other related marketing material that accompanies this brochure. 2

Life lasts. How long will you live? There s no way to know. You could be retired for as long as you worked. That s because, on average, people are living longer. In the coming years, it may be quite common for people to remain active well into their 80s and 90s. While this sounds like good news, most people are not planning on needing income for that length of time. As a result, they run the risk of outliving their assets. Financial experts call this longevity risk and it s one of the primary reasons to consider a variable annuity as a part of your overall retirement strategy. A variable annuity is one of the few products individuals can buy that offers the option of payments for life, no matter how long you live. These payments are backed by the claims-paying ability and financial strength of the company that issues your annuity. They help ensure that, during your retirement years, you can experience a special kind of security: income you can count on for life. Among married couples, both age 65, there s a 50% chance of one spouse living to age 92 and a 25% chance of one spouse living to age 97. 1 American life expectancy at birth for the total population has reached a record high of 78.37 years, an increase of nearly 10 years in the last 50 years alone. 2 This means your retirement could last 20 to 30 years, or longer. It s your retirement income. What will you choose? A variable annuity may offer you these retirement income options: YEARS TO LIVE AMERICANS ARE LIVING LONGER. The average life expectancies of American males and females. 1 35 n Men n Women 30 25 20 15 10 5 Receive payments for as long as you live. Receive payments that last throughout your lifetime, or at least a certain number of years if you die earlier than expected. You and your spouse receive payments that continue for as long as the last survivor lives. You and your spouse receive payments that will last as long as the last survivor lives, or at least a certain number of years if both of you die earlier than expected. Receive payments for a specified period of time. Not all income options are available within all products. Stock markets stumble. Over the long-term, history has shown that stocks can be a powerful way to grow your assets and outpace inflation. But caution is warranted. Over the short-term, stocks don t always travel in an upward direction. Sometimes, at moments that are inopportune for us for example, when we need retirement income stocks may stumble. While stocks can be powerful long-term investments, 12 of the past 50 years have ended in negative stock returns. 1 Variable annuities offer ways to benefit from up markets while protecting amounts invested from downturns. 60 THE UPS AND DOWNS OF EQUITIES 1 50 S&P 500 Index Returns (in percentages) 40 30 20 10 0-10 -20-30 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2009 2010-40 2008 Like other investments, variable annuities are subject to market risk and will fluctuate in value. However, MetLife variable annuities offer options called living benefits, available for an additional annual cost. Depending on the type of optional living benefit you choose, MetLife living benefits can: 2 Help provide a predictable level of income for life Offer the ability to lock in market gains, if account value increases on a contract anniversary, to assure a higher level of immediate or future income all regardless of how stock market fluctuations may affect your variable annuity s account value. For more detailed information on MetLife optional living benefits, see the prospectus and product brochure. Not all benefits are available with all products or in all states. Please consult with your financial professional to find out which ones are available to you. Any benefits due on the annuity are backed by the claims-paying ability and financial strength of the issuing insurance company. 1 Source: Morningstar Direct, 1/11. Compounding assets. The power of tax deferral A variable annuity is a tax-deferred investment, meaning that you don t have to pay taxes on your investment earnings until you withdraw them or they are distributed to you. By not paying taxes on these earnings, they have the potential to compound and accumulate faster since they are allowed to remain in your account. If you are buying a variable annuity to fund a qualified retirement plan or IRA, you should do so for the variable annuity s features and benefits other than tax deferral. In such cases, tax deferral is not an additional benefit of the variable annuity. References throughout this material to tax advantages, such as tax deferral and tax-free transfers, are subject to this consideration. Taxable vs. Tax-Deferred Investments Because assets are allowed to compound over time, tax deferred investments have the potential to accumulate money faster than taxable investments earning the same rate of return. This chart illustrates tax deferral and how it can be effective over the long-term. It shows how an initial investment of $100,000 (non-qualified), compounded at 8% annually over 25 years, grows to $684,848 with taxes deferred. Once taxes are paid on the lump sum distribution, the amount is $480,151, which is still more than the $355,135 accumulated in a taxable investment over 25 years. Hypothetical Example. For Illustrative Purposes Only. $700k $560k $420k THE POWER OF TAX DEFERRAL $684,848 $480,151 $355,135 Variable Annuities from MetLife also provide investors with: Professionally managed investment options spanning a broad array of investment classes and management styles. Through them, you and your financial professional will have the tools you need to construct a properly diversified portfolio, according to virtually any asset allocation strategy you feel is right for you. $280k Asset allocation portfolios that make it easier to carry out your chosen asset allocation strategy. $140k $0 Tax Deferred Taxable This example assumes a 35% Federal income tax rate, assessed yearly for the taxable investment and at period-end for the tax deferred investment. The tax deferred and taxable investments do not represent any MetLife product or other investment. Lower maximum tax rates on capital gains and dividends would make the investment return for the taxable investment more favorable, thereby reducing the difference in performance between the accounts shown. Please consider your personal investment horizon and income tax brackets, both current and anticipated, when making an investment decision as these may further impact the results of the comparison. The tax deferred investment does not reflect the deduction of mortality and expense and administration charges, investment option expenses, an annual contract fee and withdrawal charges. If such fees, charges and expenses were shown, the tax deferred performance would be lower. Likewise, the taxable investment does not reflect the deduction of fees, charges or expenses and if shown, would reduce the performance of the taxable investment. Taxable distributions are subject to ordinary income tax and if taken prior to age 59½, may also be subject to a 10% Federal income tax penalty. 5

Costs climb. When planning for tomorrow s expenses, you can t think in terms of today s dollars. To truly achieve financial freedom in retirement, you need products that facilitate the growth potential of your investments so they have the best chance of growing faster than inflation. Historically, equities have provided long-term investors with the best opportunity to outpace inflation. 1 That s why variable annuities from MetLife offer a wide variety of equity options, from aggressive growth and international funds to more conservative choices. What s more, every dollar you invest in your variable annuity benefits from tax-deferral as long as it s held in your account, 2 as you build your assets. Transfers among investment options within your variable annuity are free of fees and current income taxes. 3 Annuities that are considered qualified under IRS rules provide no additional tax deferral benefit. A qualified variable annuity should be considered only for the additional features and benefits they can provide. INFLATION RISK 4 1967-2011 44 $2+ $3+ per gal 5 49 33 per gal 1967 2011 1967 2011 1967 2011 Postage Stamp Dozen Eggs Gasoline 1 Past performance is not indicative of future results. 2 Withdrawals may be subject to withdrawal charges if made too soon. Withdrawals of taxable amounts are subject to ordinary income tax and, if taken before age 59½, a 10% Federal income tax penalty may apply. Withdrawals will reduce the account value, cash surrender value, death benefits and living benefits. 3 MetLife variable annuity contracts and the underlying portfolios are not designed for market timing strategies such as programmed transfers, frequent transfers or transfers by one or more contract holders that are large in relation to the total assets of the underlying portfolios. We may limit transfers in circumstances of market timing or other transfers we determine are or would be to the disadvantage of other contract owners. Please refer to the prospectus for more details on transfers including waiver of fee. 4 Sources: 1960s Flashback, 1960 Economy/Prices, http://www.1960sflashback.com. Family matters. Retirement planning isn t just about you. It s also about your spouse, partner and children anyone whose life can be critically affected by how you plan your future. How might your spouse or partner be affected if you die during a market downturn? How will you ensure that your children use their inheritance wisely? Protecting the people we care about is a great feeling which is why MetLife variable annuities offer standard and optional death benefits and other optional features to help you take care of your loved ones if you should die prematurely. Your spouse, partner, children and other beneficiaries can be affected by your retirement plans A variable annuity s death benefit can provide the assurance of knowing loved ones are taken care of A variety of death benefits are available (some for an additional cost), payable if you should die before beginning the lifetime income phase of your annuity. Depending on the one you choose, you can: 1 Ensure that your beneficiaries receive at least the amount you originally invested, adjusted for withdrawals Periodically lock in any market gains in the form of a higher death benefit amount Lock in any market gains in your account on a contract anniversary, in up markets and ensure a minimum rate of return in down markets Other optional features are also available that can: Help your spouse avoid current taxes should you die before beginning the lifetime payout phase of your annuity by continuing the contract under his or her name Schedule how and when your beneficiaries receive the death benefit in case you are concerned about their ability to properly manage the money they receive Although they should not be purchased solely to avoid probate, variable annuities offer a benefit not found in many other investments. The death benefit will not be subject to probate, provided it is transferred to a properly named beneficiary, which can help make a difficult time a little bit easier on your loved ones. 2 Under the Internal Revenue Code ( IRC ), spousal continuation and certain distribution options are available only to a person who is defined as a spouse under the Federal Defense of Marriage Act or any other applicable Federal law. All contract provisions will be interpreted and administered in accordance with the requirements of the IRC. Therefore, under current Federal law, a purchaser who has or is contemplating a civil union or same-sex marriage should note that the favorable tax treatment afforded under Federal law would not be available to such same-sex partner or same-sex spouse. Same-sex partners or spouses who own or are considering the purchase of annuity products that provide benefits based upon status as a spouse should consult a tax advisor. 1 The following is provided through a benefit base and does not apply to the account value. Additional charges apply for optional death benefits. 2 In general, the annuity benefit passing to your designated beneficiary will still be included in your taxable estate for estate tax purposes. Probate rules may differ in each state. Be sure to speak with your attorney to coordinate the beneficiary designation with the remainder of your estate plan. Beneficiary must be living when the owner dies. 7

Financial needs change. It s nice to know that, with a MetLife variable annuity, you have the flexibility to withdraw portions of your account value, if you choose. You can use the money as an ongoing source of income or withdraw it periodically, as unexpected financial needs arise. You will want to use these features judiciously, as withdrawals of taxable amounts are subject to ordinary income taxes and, if made before age 59½, a 10% Federal income tax penalty may apply. Withdrawals of principal may be subject to withdrawal charges. Withdrawals also reduce your account value, death benefit and the benefits of any optional living benefit riders that you may elect with your contract. Financial freedom in retirement. Retirement can be the best time of your life. All you need to do is be ready. Work with your financial professional on a comprehensive retirement strategy. Consider what life may have in store. Then, ask your financial professional if a MetLife variable annuity is right for you. 8
