Do not put to one side to Read Later and risk missing out Action Required by Friday 31 st July Is your trust realising all available Employment Tax savings? Is non compliance putting you at risk of HMRC fines? Long gone are the days when trusts and foundation trusts could afford to put employment tax on the back burner. At Assista Consulting, having worked with more than 100 NHS finance teams over the last 10 years; last year we teamed up with HMRC expert Louise Hateley to expand our offering into employment tax advice. Louise began her career in employment tax over 10 years ago. She has worked for the Big Four providers (Ernst & Young, Deloitte) and was later head hunted to work at Lloyds Banking Group, where she was responsible for all matters relating to employment tax. She has worked on some very high profile cases and has saved her clients 000 s of pounds over the years. During the course of her work she s identified 6 key parameters that NHS accountants need to consider when preparing to engage with HMRC. 1.) Expenses and benefits Have you considered not only the cost of the expenses and benefits you provide, but also the compliance issues and risks surrounding them? 2) Salary sacrifice schemes There are lots of different schemes to explore, including ones for travel if you have a mobile workforce to the ones that you have probably heard of for example such as pensions, child care, cycles and car parking amongst others. 3) Overpayments of tax and NIC to HMRC Often if a paper system is used to keep a HR record, there may be a miscommunication or a delay between HR and Payroll when an employee leaves the trust and the employee is often overpaid. Therefore, there is an opportunity to reclaim the tax and NIC back. 4) HMRC Travel rules The rules can be quite complicated for compliance purposes and there are also some favourable tax treatments available.
5) Termination and redundancy payments The rules can be misunderstood and the incorrect tax and NIC treatment is followed, which then opens the trust up to a compliance exposure, as well as sometimes overpaying tax and NIC. 6) Employment Status This is a common area with NHS trusts as doctors may be be employed and self-employed at the same time. It is important that you are aware of the rules surrounding this common issue and are armed with some practical solutions of how to defend a position in the event of a HMRC audit. What will you receive? At the seminar Louise will give your delegate practical advice on how to structure your affairs more efficiently, how to identify any potential savings and also how to protect your trust in the event of a PAYE audit from HMRC. In fact Louise recently spoke to a Director of a trust where they had overspent 400,000 on tax and NI and he told her how much he wished he could have attended this seminar! Benefits that you can expect from the seminar include: A complete transfer of 10 years of her employment tax knowledge to your delegate. Practical strategies that can be immediately deployed.
