For example, the Indian government's ambitious target of doubling farm income by 2022 should benefit stocks in the rural theme. Similarly, GST will lead to formalisation of economy and benefit sectors where the share of unorganised players is higher. Again, government's 'Housing for All' project will benefit cement, building material players and Housing Finance companies. The scheme will try to construct a portfolio in-and-around such emerging themes. The sustained regulatory change and positive policy frame work coupled with economic recovery should prove to be tailwind for the stocks in the BFSI sector. The Indian government's ambitious target of doubling farm income by 2022 should benefit stocks in the rural theme. Increase in weight in the cyclical commodity sector is tactical in nature. TAURUS DISCOVERY FUND - (AN OPEN-ENDED EQUITY FUND WITH MID CAP AND SMALL CAP FOCUS) The primary objective of the Scheme is to identify and select low priced stocks through price discovery mechanism, which would broadly include: To capitalise on available opportunity on growth potential offered by undervalued stocks, especially in the midcap and smallcap space. Such stocks being low priced and if dividend paying, decent dividend yield will give desired cushion in the volatile capital market. Many of such cases where investment will be made may be turnaround cases, therefore, greater potential for improvement in NAV. Mr. Prasanna Pathak (w.e.f. 's Comment: Our overcall call has been inspired by the revival of the demand in the areas of specific focus by Government. We have added few more NBFC's to take advantage of this. We have maintained a positive bias on Private Banks given their resilience to generate profitability in stressed times. In PSU banks the exposure has been restricted to larger players with relatively improving asset quality outlook and faster prospects of stabilisation. 's Comment (Equity Schemes): Both the headline indices - Sensex & Nifty, ended lower by about 5% during the month. IT sector was the best performer, while Banking sector- especially PSU Banks, was the worst performer. Global markets witnessed significant volatility in February 2018 largely on the back of rising global yields. Indian markets followed global markets. Domestic dampeners included the announcement of long term capital gains on equities, the decision by Indian exchanges to ban overseas trading of Indian derivatives, and the revelation of a major scam at public sector bank. FPI were net sellers in Indian equities. However domestic flows provided support. Most macroeconomic indicators are suggesting sustained recovery, and earnings are also witnessing a pick up. However recent developments in the banking sector and global developments including the most recent announcement of trade wars are likely to weigh on market sentiment. Indian markets will continue to take cues from global markets, and are likely to trade in a range. 's Comment (Debt Schemes): Significant developments in February 2018 were as under: The union budget for financial year 2018-19 was presented in Parliament on Feb 1, 2018. Fiscal deficit for 2018-19 was pegged at 3.3% of GDP while the deficit figure for 2017-18 came in at 3.5% of GDP (against a budgeted figure of 3.2%). This was a clear evidence of fiscal slippage and the government missing its deficit targets. Gross market borrowing in the next financial year has been pegged at more than INR 6 trn. The government also announced that the minimum support price (MSP) of all eligible agri products would now be set at 1.5 times the cost of production. The monetary policy committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India met early February to set policy interest rates. The committee decided to make no changes to any of the policy variables viz. the repo rate, the CRR and the SLR. All of them were kept unchanged. The decision was made through a 5-1 vote, with all members except for Mr. Michael Patra opting for the status quo. Inflation expectations for the second half of Fy18 were however raised marginally to 4.8% (on an average) from the earlier expected range of 4.3%-4.7%. Average Inflation inflation in Q4 of FY2018 is expected to be around 5.1%. Gross Value Added (GVA) is forecast to grow at 6.6% in FY18. This is lower than the 6.7% estimate that the committee had provided in its December 2017 policy statement. Economic growth for FY19 is estimated at 7.2%. Inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of January 2018 came in at 5.07%. This was in line with expectations and slightly lower than the 5.21% print seen in the previous month. Core CPI remained relatively stable at 5.10%. Inflation based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) came in at 2.84% for the month of January. This compares with the 3.58% print witnessed in the previous month. Annual growth in Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for December 2017 came in at a healthy 7.1%. This suggests that the economic recovery seems to be taking a firm foothold. India's trade deficit widened sharply to USD 16.29 bn in January 2018 compared to USD 9.2 bn witnessed in the same month a year ago. Imports contracted by 2.9% to USD 40.62 bn while exports contracted by a much larger 9.8% to USD 24.38 bn. Punjab National Bank revealed a suspected fraud amounting to approx. USD 1.8 bn at one of its branches in Mumbai. This was related to unauthorized letters of undertakings for supplier financing in foreign locations granted to the jeweller Nirav Modi and the Gitanjali group of companies.
