The IBA structure Legal Practice Division (LPD) The LPD covers all practice areas of law. Its objectives are to: Promote an interchange of information and views among its members as to laws, practices and professional responsibilities relating to the practice of law throughout the world Facilitate communication among its members Provide the opportunity to all its members to be active in the division through its sections, committees, fora and other groupings Undertake such related projects as may be approved from time to time by the Division s Council Public and Professional Interest Division (PPID) The PPID includes the Section on Public and Professional Interest (SPPI), the Bar Issues Commission (BIC) and the International Bar Association s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI). It provides a wide array of projects, activities, committees and other entities focusing on issues and professional interests that make the practice of law a profession, and not only an occupation. Its objectives are to: Promote an interchange of information and views among member organisations of the association and its individual members about the public and professional interest activities of the legal profession throughout the world Support and promote those activities, the rule of law and the defence of human rights Facilitate communication among member organisations and division members Provide the opportunity to member organisations and all members to be active in the Division through its BIC, committees, fora and other groupings; and to undertake such related projects as may be approved from time to time by the Division s leadership Regional fora IBA regional fora represent the interests of members practising in, or with links to, a particular region. They provide networking opportunities, organise conferences and sessions at conferences, and produce publications with regional relevance. Frequently asked questions How long does the membership year last? Membership runs from 1 January to 31 December. Those joining after 1 September in a given year will receive member benefits for the remainder of that calendar year at no extra cost, that s up to 16 months membership for the price of 12, if membership is paid at the time of joining. What are my direct benefits as an IBA member? IBA membership guarantees an opportunity to access a vast online library of legal resources and content and to receive the latest IBA publications, such as Global Insight, magazine, newsletters and journals. Members also receive discounts to a IBA conference registration or on the purchase of IBA products. For a full list of benefits please refer to the Membership benefits section on page 4. IBA members can benefit from being part of a network of fellow members by updating their IBA public profile with photographs and biographies. Their public profile will then be available for other IBA members to view. How long do I need to wait before I can get my membership card? Your membership card will be sent within a month of processing your application form. Do I get a membership certificate? No, we do not normally send membership certificates. However, should you require an IBA membership certificate, there will be a charge of 15 per certificate. Does IBA membership entitle me to practice law? The IBA is a non-regulatory body and membership does not entitle anyone to practice law in any jurisdiction. Will I be asked to renew? Yes, we will send renewal notices in January of each year to remind you that it is time to renew your membership. What should be my first step after joining? On joining, you will be sent your unique login details. Log into MyIBA and complete your personal profile. Where can I find information about my committees? From MyIBA you can look through all relevant materials and media connected to your chosen committees. Can members sign up to conferences online? Yes. New members will be sent login details by email. Once you receive them you will be able to go to MyIBA area of the website, where you can sign up to conferences, purchase IBA products, pay or check the status of your payment. Members who are unable to make online payments will not be able to register for conferences online and will be required to complete a hard-copy registration form. Do I get a discount if I register more than one lawyer from the same firm? No. However, if a significant number of lawyers from your firm wish to become members of the IBA, your firm may want to consider joining as a Group Member firm. No. The IBA membership runs from 1 January to 31 December and it is not pro-rated. How do I pay? By choosing a free regional forum as a part of my membership am I entitled to attend one of the regional conferences for free? No, your membership does not entitle you to attend any regional conferences for free. The word forum can often be misinterpreted to mean a conference. When used by the IBA, forum is an alternative name for a committee. A regional forum is a committee set up to represent the interests of members practising in, or with links to, a particular region. Are any conferences included in the membership price? No, you are not invited to any free conferences as a part of your membership package. But, as a member, you can receive a significant discount on IBA conference fees. How do I find out my IBA membership number? Your membership number will be sent to you in a welcome email. It will also be displayed on your membership card. Can I pay a discounted rate for my membership? Discounted rates are available for full-time academics, judges, government lawyers, retired lawyers and lawyers from low income countries, see our website for further details: www.int-bar.org/countries_eligible_for_discount.cfm.
