Dear McNair Scholars Applicant, The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program) is a federally funded graduate preparation program at UW Superior. The program consists of focused and challenging workshops and seminars as well as an intensive research project for which you earn up to $2800. This program is designed to prepare you for entry and success in graduate school. The national McNair objective is to increase the number of PhDs; thus this program is not designed for students who solely want to earn degrees in law or medicine. The McNair Program at UW Superior is open to students from UW Superior, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Northland College, and AMU (148 th Air National Guard members). To be eligible for the program, students must meet federal income guidelines and be first-generation (neither natural/adoptive parent has a bachelor s degree) OR be a member of a group underrepresented in graduate education (Native American/Alaskan Native, African American, or Hispanic). Students must also be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in college. Seniors applying for this program need to complete research prior to graduation. The minimum cumulative GPA requirement is 2.75 for entry into the program. To apply for this exciting and challenging opportunity to be in a graduate school preparatory program, please submit the following: Complete the McNair Scholars application, including all essay questions. Attach copies of transcripts for all colleges or universities you have attended OR arrange to have transcripts (unofficial transcripts are all that are needed) sent to the McNair Scholars Program office before the application deadline. Attach a copy of the most recent tax return that shows taxable income (usually line 43). We need to know the taxable income, not adjusted gross income. If you are listed on your parents tax forms, we will need a copy of their taxes. Please see the attached examples. Attach a copy of your current resume. AMU Applicants (only): be sure to include a letter from your Commanding Officer verifying your military service. Please hand-deliver or mail all application materials to the McNair Scholars Program Office, UW Superior, 2047 Swenson Hall, P.O. Box 2000, Superior, WI 54880. Applications are due October 19, 2018. Selection into the program will be based on your application form, essay, transcripts, two recommendation forms, and a personal interview. Only complete applications will be considered. If you have any questions, please contact us. We look forward to receiving your application. Good luck! Dr. Marsha S. We do not need all of the paperwork associated with tax returns, we usually only need the first 2 pages of your taxes: We need to see Taxable Income (could be 1 st or 2 nd page) We also need to see any Dependents claimed, and Family Size (usually the 1 st page) If you did not file taxes, or if your parents claim you and did not file taxes (usually because the income threshold was not met), you will need to submit a letter stating that taxes were not filed for 2017. In the case of parents claiming dependents, the filing parent will need to submit a signed letter stating that taxes were not filed. DO NOT SELF SELECT!
