P 8 Heritage meets innovation: A space for inspiration Inspired by traditional Arab souks, the site integrates the UAE s unique architectural heritage and environment of vibrancy and trade with the requirements of the Expo to foster the fundamental principles of innovation, partnership and collaboration between participants and visitors His Excellency Mohamed Meer Abdalla Al Raeesi, the UAE s Ambassador to France, has submitted the country s official Bid Dossier in support of its bid to host World Expo 2020 to the Paris -based Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the intergovernmental body in charge of overseeing the bidding, selection and organisation of World Expos. The 640-page document, which will be sent to representatives of all 163 member countries of the BIE, outlines the UAE s vision for the 2020 World Expo. It discusses the Dubai Expo 2020 theme as well as plans for the Dubai Expo 2020 site, event visitors, promotion, financial costs, environmental impact and ideas about the legacy to the host city and beyond. The presentation followed the recent unveiling of the Expo 2020 master plan for Dubai Trade Centre-Jebel Ali at the 152nd General Assembly. The proposed site was selected due to its strategic location, equidistant between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and adjacent to the Dubai World Central airport and Jebel Ali Port, providing ease of access for the expected millions of international and local visitors. The site master plan, which was designed by HOK, Populus and Arup, reflects the country s Expo bid theme: Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. At the core of the site is an open plaza called Al Wasl ( the connection ) a historic name for Dubai. Branching out from the plaza are three main zones that symbolise the bid s sub themes of sustainability, mobility and opportunity. Inspired by traditional Arab souks, the site integrates the UAE s unique architectural heritage and environment of vibrancy and trade with the requirements of the Expo to foster the fundamental principles of innovation, partnership and collaboration between participants and visitors. Thinkwell, an experiential design and development firm, has also been appointed to develop the entertainment master plan and will bring the plans for Dubai Expo 2020 to life with a programme of shows, performances and events that will appeal to all generations, enhance the visitor experience and drive global tourist traffic to the Expo. Highlighting the site s visitor capacity and plans for its long-term use after 2020, Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State and Managing Director of the Higher Committee for Hosting the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, said: This 438- hectare site will be one of the largest ever used for a World Expo and will ensure an unforgettable experience for the event s 25 million visitors, who will collectively make upwards of 33 million visits. Throughout the development process, we have also sought to ensure that the site will serve as a permanent attraction beyond 2020 and will enhance further the UAE s long-term appeal as a premier destination for highprofile global events. The design is aligned to the legacy proposition and future use of the site, with the main walkways shaded by a photovoltaic fabric structure which will capture solar energy to generate clean power, plus contribute nearly 50 per cent of the power requirements that are needed for Expo. Mr. Helal Saeed Al Marri, CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre, added: Legacy planning will be deployed at the earliest stages of Expo preparations, leveraging every opportunity for Dubai Expo 2020 to re-energise research, innovation and collaboration across the site, and truly resonating the core principles of our bid theme and sub themes. Every element of the master plan has been designed with due consideration to its after-life and with a defined strategy for re-use, striking a balance between long-term requirements for the city as well as the six months of Expo operations. The Dubai Trade Centre-Jebel Ali site has been master-planned to create a legacy in environmental sustainability for the BIE and the global community, while delivering a cost-efficient and viable infrastructure for Dubai and the region. P 9 Maiden Calls The Lighter Side Name: C.S Mein Schiff 2 Vessel Type:: Cruise Company: TUI Cruises Date of Call: 03/11/2012 The Culture Corner The Art of Falconry Falconry is an integral part of desert life which has been practiced in the UAE for centuries. Originally, falcons were used for hunting, to supplement the Bedouin diet with some meat, such as hare or houbara. The sport of falconry is an important part of the UAE's cultural heritage. In the time before the UAE was formed, and before the discovery of oil allowed the development of roads and communication systems, hunting expeditions were also frequently used as a way for the tribal sheikhs to 'tour' their territory and keep in touch with the latest developments in areas which were otherwise incommunicado. The sheikh would hunt during the day, and then a desert majlis would be held around the campfire in the evenings, when the Bedouin would come to pay their respects and raise with him any matters of concern. Nowadays, falconry is practiced purely for sport. The main prey for falcons in the UAE are MacQueen's bustard, houbara, or hare. There is now a very successful captive breeding programme in the UAE for houbara, ensuring that this popular sport does not eliminate this species. The two main species of falcon kept in the UAE are the saker and the peregrine. The trapping and training of falcons requires skill, patience and a considerable amount of bravery. The potential danger, of course, is part of the attraction, as is the opportunity to have a close-up view of the power, grace and beauty of a falcon in flight.
