CPIP Basics The Cattle Price Insurance Program (CPIP) is a voluntary, producer-funded insurance program that protects against declines in Alberta beef cattle prices. Producers have the ability to decide on the level of coverage, for what length of time and the amount of weight to insure. Premiums will vary according to the policy length and the coverage level chosen. Premium of payment is required up front via Visa or Mastercard to purchase insurance. The four week window prior to policy expiry is the claim window where a producer can look at the weekly settlement index and decide to make a claim on a policy. There are two insurance programs currently developed for fed cattle price insurance and basis insurance. Price Insurance: an insurance policy to cover the combined risk of fluctuations in fed cattle prices, the Canadian dollar and the basis. Policies will be settled and any indemnities paid against a weekly provincial fed cattle price index. Basis Insurance: an insurance policy providing coverage on the price difference of fed cattle between Alberta and the US. Policies will be settled and any indemnities paid against a weekly provincial fed cattle basis index. Policy Lengths: 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, and 36 weeks. These policies are offered on a continual basis year round. Each policy has a Claim Window beginning four weeks prior to the Expiry Date.
