WLPIP Basics The Western Livestock Price Insurance Program consists of programs for both the hog and cattle producer in Alberta. The livestock programs include: Cattle - Fed (Price), Cattle - Fed (Basis), Cattle - Feeder (Price), Calf (Price), and Hog (Price); further referred to in this document as WCPIP and WHPIP. The Western Livestock Price Insurance Programs are voluntary, producer-funded insurance programs that protect against declines in beef cattle and hog prices for producers in Western Canada. Producers have the ability to decide on the level of coverage, the policy length and the amount of weight to insure. Premiums will vary according to the policy length and the coverage level chosen. Premiums are paid upfront via Visa or MasterCard. The price insurance programs for cattle have a four week window prior to policy expiry which is the claim window. Producers can look at the weekly settlement index and choose to make a claim on a policy during these weeks. For the Feeder or Calf program, data is calculated from auction markets and electronic sales data (teams, DLMS) across Alberta, or Saskatchewan and Manitoba, depending on the index, to provide a settlement index that is based on the price for an average quality steer in the specific geographical area. For the Fed price settlement, information is provided by Canfax for the weekly settlement. Fed basis is determined using current and historical basis calculations. Hog Price Insurance does not have the four week claim window as policies are settled automatically from an average of a month s worth of daily price data. Price Insurance: an insurance policy to cover the combined risk of fluctuations in livestock prices, the Canadian dollar, and a cash to futures basis. WCPIP policies will be settled and any indemnities paid against a weekly regional cattle price index for each product, based on data provided to WLPIP from auction markets across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba for the feeder and calf programs. The fed program gathers settlement data from Canfax, and calculates settlement from the producer reported data provided to WLPIP. Hog price insurance policies will automatically settle at the end of each month with data from the USDA HG 206, 201, 212 Report, and accounting for currency, yield differences, and the quarterly Factor. Feeder and Fed Policy Lengths: 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, and 36 weeks. These policies are offered on a continual basis year round. Calf policies are offered from February to May with settlements from September to December. Hog Policy Lengths: offered in months increments, from 2 10 months into the future. Basis Insurance: an insurance policy providing coverage on the cash to cash basis the difference in price for fed cattle in Alberta compared to Nebraska. Need Assistance?
