SPEAKERS Maan Beydoun, Senior Manager, Investment Management and Superannuation, ASIC (Canberra Roadshow) Maan Beydoun is a Senior Manager in Investment Management and Superannuation at the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. Maan has worked in the financial services industry for almost 20 years, including in administration, risk and compliance. During this period he also worked with the prudential regulator, APRA, and has been with ASIC for the last 5 years. At ASIC he has worked on policy development and implementation, including the Stronger Super reforms, surveillance and industry liaison. He is leading ASIC s work in regards to disclosure of fees and costs for superannuation and managed investment products and the recently initiated project in relation to performance reporting. He is also responsible for a number of other areas, including overseeing exchange traded funds, involvement in ASIC s innovation hub, leading ASIC s work on crowd sourced funding and marketplace lending. Gerry Brophy, Senior Manager, Supervision, Specialised Institutions Division Sydney, APRA (Brisbane Roadshow) Gerry commenced employment with APRA (Sydney) in June 2005. During this time he has supervised Superannuation entities, Credit unions, foreign bank branches and recently our new cadre of Mutual Banks but with an enduring focus and interest in Superannuation, particularly member outcomes. He currently has two supervisory teams reporting to him across superannuation and banking. Gerry also runs a number of Committees within APRA including a cross regional superannuation industry group and an APRA/ASIC superannuation operational liaison group. Prior to joining APRA Gerry worked as a Senior Manager within PWC s corporate finance and business recovery area administering large scale insolvencies and turnaround projects one of which was a failed superannuation scheme. Gerry headed the impaired assets team assisting the Acting Trustee. Gerry joined PWC having emigrated from Scotland in 1999. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant during his time at Arthur Andersen & Co., S.C. in Glasgow where he had stints in audit and corporate finance. Gerry s interest in turnaround and what ensures long term sustainability and success in entities continues within the regulatory bailiwick. James Champion, Analyst, Investment Managers and Superannuation, ASIC (Hobart Roadshow) James Champion is an Analyst in the Investment Managers and Superannuation team at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. James has worked at ASIC for more than 7 years, with superannuation experience across compliance, surveillance, policy and law reform work. Over the years at ASIC, he has worked on projects for the implementation of Stronger Super and, most recently, ASIC s work on RG 97 Fee and Cost Disclosure, Life Insurance Review, Effective Disclosure and Member Experience.
Andrew Craston, Senior Research Advisor, ASFA (Adelaide and Perth Roadshow) Andrew Craston has been Senior Research Advisor at ASFA since February 2016. In previous roles, Andrew was a Secretariat member for two recent Government Inquiries the ASIC Capability Review and the Financial System Inquiry (the Murray Inquiry). Prior to this, Andrew was an analyst at the Australian Government s Office of National Assessments and in Macroeconomic Group at Australia s Department of Treasury. Andrew has also worked in the budget and financial markets sections of the Australian Treasury. Andrew has a Bachelor of Economics with honours from the University of New South Wales. Paul Eastment, Senior Manager, The Investment Managers and Superannuation Stakeholder Team, ASIC (Brisbane Roadshow) Paul is a senior manager within the Investment Managers and Superannuation Stakeholder Team in ASIC. He has worked at ASIC for 18 years in financial services regulation. His current portfolio of responsibilities include surveillance and engagement with operators of managed investment schemes development of policy and industry liaison. Gerard Fitzpatrick, Senior Executive Leader, Investment Managers and Superannuation, ASIC (Sydney Roadshow) Gerard Fitzpatrick is Senior Executive Leader, Investment Managers and Superannuation at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. In this role he is responsible for the regulation of fund management, custodial services and conduct and disclosure requirements for superannuation funds. Other responsibilities include an active international agenda, particularly through IOSCO s Committee on Investment Management and in the development of the Asia Region Funds Passport, and the regulation of emerging innovative business models such as Crowd-Sourced Funding and Marketplace Lending. Prior to joining ASIC he was General Manager, Policy & Government Relations with the Financial Planning Association of Australia, dealing with a range of issues including superannuation, investment, credit and margin lending. He is a former Secretary General of the Institutional Money Market Funds Association and International Policy Adviser for the Investment Management Association in London. Ged s previous career includes prudential supervision, economic and market surveillance and international strategy and policy at the UK Financial Services Authority and the Bank of England.
Fiona Galbraith, Director, Policy, ASFA (Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart Roadshow) Fiona Galbraith is Director, Policy at ASFA and a lawyer with over 25 years experience of advising on policy, governance, risk and regulatory compliance within superannuation. Fiona has held a variety of senior management roles within the private sector, heading regulatory compliance; legal; audit and risk; and technical advice functions at National Mutual Life/Buck Consultants (1994 to 1997); Colonial/Jacques Martin Industry/JMIFA/Superpartners (1997 to 2005); AAS Superannuation Services (2005 to 2006) and CitiStreet/Precision Administration/Sunsuper (2006 to 2010). Fiona has also had experience in the public sector as Assistant Director, Advisings Section with the Insurance and Superannuation Commission in 1993/1994 and as Acting Legal Counsel with the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal in 2010/11. Fiona has an economics degree, majoring in economics and accounting, and a law degree from the University of Sydney and has been admitted to practice in NSW. Glen McCrea, Chief Policy Officer, ASFA (Sydney and Melbourne Roadshow) Glen McCrea has overall responsibility for ensuring that ASFA s advocacy is prioritised appropriately and supported by evidence-based policy, as well driving ASFA s work around industry best practice. He also leads the policy and research team at ASFA. Glen has over 14 years experience in government policy, most recently as a Senior Adviser in the Financial System and Services Division of the Australian Treasury. In this role, he advised the government on superannuation and insurance policy. He has extensive knowledge of taxation, economic and fiscal policy. He has a Masters of Public Policy (Economic Policy) and undergraduate degrees in economics and accounting.
Carolyn Morris, Senior Manager Superannuation Policy, APRA (Sydney and Melbourne Roadshow) Ms Carolyn Morris is the Senior Manager of the Superannuation Policy team at APRA, and has been in the role since mid-2013. Prior to taking this role, she was a member of the APRA team responsible for implementing the previous Government s Stronger Super reforms. As Senior Manager, Carolyn is responsible for the team which considers APRA s response to new developments including changes in Government policy, industry initiatives, as well as providing advice on APRA s current policy. She regularly presents to the superannuation industry on APRA developments and works closely with the other financial system regulators on superannuation policy matters. Carolyn joined APRA in December 2002 as a policy analyst and completed her undergraduate degrees in law and social science at the University of New South Wales. James O Halloran, Deputy Commissioner Superannuation, ATO (Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne Roadshow) James has national responsibility for the ATO s role in the regulation of APRA funds and Self- Managed Superannuation Funds. In this role he works closely with the Superannuation industry, advisors and other regulatory agencies. Prior to this role, James was Deputy Commissioner, Indirect Tax with responsibility the Goods and Services Tax and Excise. He has also served as Deputy Commissioner, Tax Practitioner and Lodgment Strategy with accountabilities for the ATO s services and relationship with tax practitioners. James joined the Australian Taxation Office in 1999. Prior to joining the ATO James held senior management positions in the State Revenue Office (Victoria) and other Victorian agencies. James has a Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice Administration), a Master of Corporate Law and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. Alex Purvis, Senior Manager, Investment Managers and Superannuation, ASIC (Perth and Melbourne Roadshow) Alex Purvis is a Senior Manager in the Investment Managers and Superannuation team at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. Alex has worked at ASIC for more than 18 years, holding a number of roles focused on compliance and surveillance, as well as policy and law reform. Over the years at ASIC, she has worked on projects for the implementation of FSR, Super Choice and, more recently, led projects implementing Stronger Super.
Helen Rowell, Deputy Chairman, APRA (Canberra Roadshow) Helen Rowell was appointed as Deputy Chairman of APRA in November 2015. She joined APRA in 2002 as General Manager, Industry Technical Services and was appointed APRA Member, with primary responsibility for superannuation, for a five-year term from 1 July 2013. Prior to that, Helen held other senior roles including General Manager, Policy Development, General Manager, Diversified Institutions Division and Executive General Manager, Supervisory Support Division. She was the Chair of APRA s (cross-divisional) general insurance industry group from 2006 to 2011. Helen has represented APRA at various subcommittees of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), on the Financial Stability Boards (FSB) s Supervisory Intensity and Effectiveness Group and was previously co-chair of the Joint Forum Financial Conglomerates Committee. Before joining APRA, Mrs Rowell was a partner at the international consulting firm Towers Perrin. She is also a Fellow and past President of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. Julia Stannard, Senior Policy Adviser, ASFA (Melbourne Roadshow) Julia Stannard has been a Senior Policy Adviser with ASFA since May 2013. Julia is a technical specialist with 23 years experience providing regulatory and compliance advice within the superannuation industry. In previous roles, Julia has provided specialist technical support to superannuation funds working both in-house (Risk and Compliance Manager, UniSuper) and with fund administrators (Regulatory Specialist roles at SuperPartners and Precision Administration Services/Citistreet Australia). Julia has also provided superannuation tax and advisory services to superannuation trustees, employers and fund members at Arthur Andersen (Manager) and KPMG (Assistant Manager). Julia has a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws with honors from Monash University, and is an associate member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (formerly the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia).
Graham Whyte, Assistant Commissioner Superannuation, ATO (Canberra, Brisbane and Hobart Roadshow) Graham Whyte is the Assistant Commissioner responsible for Technical Leadership and APRA Funds. He is responsible for providing advice and assistance on a variety of Superannuation topics, and also works closely with over 200 APRA Superannuation Funds. Graham s ATO career spans over 30 years, working in many different roles and external secondments, including the OECD. In recent years he was the main face and voice of the ATO for the Tax Time period for individual taxpayers. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia and Chartered Tax Advisor and holds the degrees of Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and Master of Taxation Studies from Monash University. Graham is currently located at the Box Hill office in Melbourne. Ken Whitton, Senior Policy Adviser, ASFA (Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart Roadshow) Ken Whitton is a Senior Policy Advisor in the Policy and Research team at ASFA and secretary for the ASFA Super System Design and Industry Efficiency Policy Councils. Insurance in superannuation is a key portfolio area for Ken who is an integral member of the industry wide Insurance in Superannuation Working Group (ISWG). In previous roles Ken has been a Senior Manager in two Superannuation Funds and a Consultant Educator to the Financial Planning Association (FPA) following a 15 year period practicing as a Financial Planner. He remains a Certified Financial Planner (CFP ), is a Fellow of FINSIA (F.Fin) and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD). A transition from being a practicing Financial Planner to a Superannuation Fund Leader and Advocate was brought to completion for Ken, upon graduation from the Sydney Business School with an Executive MBA in 2013. Ken is also currently a Company Director for one of Australia s largest and highest quality Children s Services providers Big Fat Smile, based in the Illawarra in NSW.
