EMPLOYEES UNDER LABOUR CONTRACT AND GROSS AVERAGE WAGES AND SALARIES, FIRST QUARTER OF 2014 According to the preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) at the end of March 2014 the number of employees under labour contract has increased by 8.5 thousand or 0.4% as compared to the end of December 2013 and reached 2.22 million. The highest increase was observed in economic activities Agriculture, forestry and fishing - 6.6%, Professional, scientific and technical activities - 3.1% and Information and communication - 2.9%. The highest decrease of employees was recorded in Administrative and support service activities - 6.9% and Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities - 3.4%. In the structure of employees by economic activities the biggest relative share of employees was in Manufacturing - 21.9% and Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles - 17.4%. At the end of March 2014 as compared to March 2013 the number of employees under labour contract has declined by 14.5 thousand or 0.7%. The highest decrease in absolute figures was observed in economic activities Administrative and support service activities - 20.2 thousand, Other services activities - 1.8 thousand and Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities - 1.4 thousand. In percentages the highest decrease was in Administrative and support service activities - 15.1% and Other services activities - by 5.0%. The average monthly wages and salaries of the employees under labour contract in January was 794 BGN, in February - 780 BGN and in March 2014-813 BGN. Figure 1. In the first quarter of 2014 in comparison with the fourth quarter of 2013 the average monthly wages and salaries have decreased by 3.9% getting 796 BGN. The highest decrease in wages and salaries was reported in Real estate activities - 17.6%, Education -14.2% and Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles - 7.6%. Figure 2. Compared to the first quarter of 2013 the average monthly wages and salaries in the first quarter of 2014 have risen by 2.3%. The highest growth rates were recorded in economic activities: Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities - 7.4%, Construction - 6.6% and Manufacturing - 5.6%. The economic activities with the highest wages and salaries in the fourth quarter of 2014 were: Information and communication - 1 765 BGN Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply - 1 533 BGN Financial and insurance activities - 1 449 BGN. The lowest wages and salaries were recorded in: Accommodation and food service activities - 549 BGN Administrative and support service activities - 554 BGN Other services activities - 566 BGN. In comparison with a year earlier the average monthly wages and salaries in public sector have grown by 7.0%, while in private sector - by 0.5%. Figure 3. Methodological notes The source of information is the Quarterly Survey on employees, hours worked, wages and salaries, and other expenditures paid by the employer. It is sample survey which main purpose is to make a study of the current state and dynamics of some main aspects of labour market. The sample used for the survey is a stratified random sample without replacement. Stratification criteria used include: economic activity (NACE rev.2), size of the enterprise (according to the number of employees) and regional breakdown (28 districts, NUTS3).
