InveSTAR April 2018 Fact Sheet

MONTHLY REPORT APRIL 2018 From the Desk of Chief Investment Officer OVERVIEW OF MARKET Markets started the year with a positive bias as Nifty gained ~6% with corporate earnings coming largely in line, IMD forecasting a normal monsoon and global sentiment relatively stable. Crude prices firmed up ~6% during the month to $73.2 as OPEC hinted that they may extend their output cut. Further, IT, FMCG and Pharma Goods sectors outperformed while Telecom, Banks and Energy underperformed the Nifty for the month. FIIs sold approximately Rs 5,368 cr, while domestic mutual funds bought around Rs 9,641 cr of equity during the month. The Index of Industrial Production was reported at 7.1% in February compared to 7.5% in January. CPI inflation cooled to 4.3% in March against 4.4% in February. WPI inflation was unchanged month on month at 2.5% in March. The Bond yield rose during the month of April 2018. The benchmark 10 year G-Sec (7.17% GOI 2028) closed at 37bp higher at 7.77% against 7.40% last month. FUND PERFORMANCE During the month of April 2018, majority of our Equity and Growth Funds outperfomed their respective benchmarks. For 3 years period ending April 2018, majority of Equity and Growth funds delivered annualised returns of around 8-10%. Balanced and Bond funds delivered about 6-8% annualized returns for the said period. Fund wise performance is detailed in the following sheets. FIXED INCOME MARKET OUTLOOK Amid positive domestic market fundamentals (represented by near term favorable demand supply balance, comfortable system liquidity, lower headline inflation print and dovish tone by RBI) and uncertain global environment (represented by tariff retaliation, geo-political tension, rise in global yield and sudden spike in crude price) domestic fixed income market witnessed unprecedented volatility in the new fiscal. In the first month, 10-year benchmark yield touched a low and high of 7.12 % and 7.78% respectively. Depreciating domestic currency, lower than expected hike in the foreign portfolio investment limit (by 0.5% of the outstanding stock each year) and hawkish minutes of Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) adversely impacted market sentiment. In absence of any positive near-term trigger, 10-year G-sec yield are now seen in a band of 7.60-7.85%. Medium term rate path will be contingent upon upcoming inflation trajectory, Government s revenue collections, global yield movement and appetite of various investors. EQUITY MARKET OUTLOOK We started the financial year with a positive outlook on consumption, auto sectors (both supported by government spending) and IT sector (drawing from currency depreciation) - which seems to be reflecting in earnings and stock prices so far. Earnings trend seem to be suggesting a pick-up in rural demand also. Further, the banks balance sheet repair looks to be headed in the right direction. Equity markets had a good run in April, on expectations of decent earnings, despite higher yields, INR weakness and higher oil prices. We expect the positive equity market trend to continue in the near-term on back of earnings momentum, contingent upon election outcomes, normalcy of monsoons and continued domestic inflows.
