Updates and revisions of national SUTs for the November 2013 release of the WIOD Edited by Marcel Timmer (University of Groningen) With contributions from: Abdul A. Erumban, Reitze Gouma and Gaaitzen J. de Vries (University of Groningen) November 2013 This project is funded by the European Commission, Research Directorate General as part of the 7th Framework Programme, Theme 8: Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities. Grant Agreement no: 225 281 1

Updates and revisions of national SUTs for the November 2013 release of the WIOD The input files for the estimation of the time series of national Supply and Use Tables (SUTs) have been updated to include National Accounts (NA) expenditure data for the years 2010-2011. Data on output and intermediate inputs by industry have also been added for these years. Typically, this entailed applying growth rates for expenditure categories, gross output and value added for 2009-2011 from the National Accounts Statistics to the 2009 values in the previous release. In some cases the NA data and/or the output data by industry has been updated for the year 2008 and 2009 as well. This is detailed in the country notes below. 1 Major changes for these years involve the revisions of imports and exports from China for 2008 and 2009, and revisions of trade data for Turkey. Country notes Australia have been updated using industry Value Added trends for 2009-2011. Austria data by industry have been revised for 2008-2009 and updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Gross Output and Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. 2 Belgium trends for Gross Output and Value Added taken from EUROSTAT Brazil has been revised for 2009. Output data by industry has been updated to 2011 using trimestral VA data and applying the 2009 GO/VA ratio to 2010-2011. Canada NA expenditure data as well as industrial data on Output and Intermediate Inputs have been updated to 2011 using industry trends from the Canadian National Accounts. 1 Volume data has not been updated to 2011, hence, tables in previous years' prices are available for 1996-2009 only. 2 Most European countries have adopted the new NACE 2 industry classification. Data from Eurostat for the years 2010 and 2011 is given in this new classification. We used a correspondence mapping to bridge to the NACE rev 1 data for 1995-2009. 2

China The trade data have been changed following the new release of NA data. In the April 2012 release of the WIOD the growth in imports and exports was substantially overestimated. This has been corrected using the new data released by the NBS. Data from OECD NA by broad industries and final expenditure categories are used to update the time series to 2011. Czech Republic data by industry have been revised for 2008-2009 and updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Gross Output and Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. Denmark Output and Intermediate Input data by industry have been revised for 2008-2009 and updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Gross Output and Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. Finland trends for Gross Output and Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. France NA expenditure data has been revised for 2009 and updated to 2011 using data from OECD. Output and Intermediate Input data by industry have been updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Gross Germany Added taken from EUROSTAT. Data was available by broad sectors only. Growth trends of aggregate sectors have been applied to underlying industries. Hungary data by industry have been revised for 2009 and updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Gross India NA expenditure data has been revised for 2009. Output and Intermediate Input data by industry have been revised for 2009. Updates to 2010 and 2011 based on detailed data from CSO. 3

Indonesia Data on detailed industries and final expenditure categories from BPS (the national statistical office) are used to update series to 2011. Ireland NA expenditure data has been updated to 2010 using data from OECD. For 2011 the growth trend from EUROSTAT was used. Output and Intermediate Input data by industry have been updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. 2009 GO/VA ratios Italy Added taken from EUROSTAT. For 2011 only VA data was available, 2010 GO/VA ratios have been applied. Japan has also been revised for 2008-2009. Data from the Japan Industry Database (JIP) was used to update data for output and intermediate inputs. GDP and expenditure data up to 2011 were taken from monthly statistics available from the national statistical office (NSO). Korea Output and Intermediate Input data by industry have been revised for 2009, and updated to 2010 and 2011 using the new release of Korean national accounts. Mexico NA expenditure data has been revised for 2008-2009. VA growth trends at the industry level have been used to update Output and Intermediate Inputs to 2011. Netherlands trends for Gross Output and Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. For 2011 only VA data was available, 2010 GO/VA ratios Poland NA expenditure data has been revised for 2009 and updated to 2011 using data from OECD. Output and Intermediate Input data by industry have been updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Gross Russia NA expenditure data and industrial Output and Intermediate inputs data have been updated up to 2011 using data from the OECD national accounts aggregates. 4

Spain Added taken from EUROSTAT. For 2011 only VA data was available, 2010 GO/VA ratios have been applied. Sweden trends for Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. No data for Gross Output was available, therefore 2009 GO/VA ratios Taiwan NA expenditure And output and Intermediate Input data by industry have been revised for 2009, and updated to 2010 and 2011 using detailed data from Taiwanese national accounts. Turkey In the previous version, services trade was estimated based on trade data from Turkstat. This data appeared to underestimate services trade. In this release, growth rates for trade by product in between years for which official SUTs are available, are interpolated using growth rates by product from UN COMTRADE. For services, total import and export growth rates are used. The net result of this adjustment is an upward correction of service trade. In addition, the sign of Purchases on the domestic territory by non-residents is corrected United Kingdom data by industry have been updated to 2011 using industry growth trends for Value Added taken from EUROSTAT. No data for Gross Output was available, therefore 2009 GO/VA ratios United States An additional official SUT was used for the year 2010 from BEA annual tables. BEA National Accounts data was used for updating to 2011. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, and Slovenia For these countries detailed national accounts data was not available in order to update. Therefore the national SUTs have been updated directly by applying aggregate GDP growth rates for 2009-2011 to the 2009 tables. Implicitly, it is assumed that the structure of the economy in terms of expenditure, value added and gross output has not changed over this period. Users are therefore advised to treat this estimates with care. 5
