In my current role I oversee Commercial Pricing. I also have prior experience in reserving as well as medical cost and analytics. Member of the Health and Technology sections Technology is something that impacts all practice areas. HealthCare is a practice area that is constantly evolving and as such is constantly using technology in new ways. After attending the Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, I noticed that there was not a lot of representation of health actuaries in the technology section. If elected, I would like to help bridge that gap.
Henry Han Chen, FSA, ACIA, MAAA Senior Consultant Ernst & Young LLP Chicago, IL Henry is a senior actuarial consultant of Ernst & Young LLP based in its Chicago office, with a demonstrated history of working experiences in the life and health insurance industry. Current areas of focus include actuarial transformation, actuarial risk and governance, automation, and advanced analytics within the actuarial functions. Prior to EY, Henry held a position with RBC Insurance in Canada, where he provided risk management support to its life and health business, including providing opinion on adequacy of company s liabilities, sufficiency of capital, future financial conditions, risk mitigation and supporting on business strategies. He also held several internship positions in asset management, fixed income trading, and economic capital roles. As progress due to technology becomes more volatile and less predictable, we are entering a period of extreme disruption ahead. It becomes increasingly important for actuaries to help the industry embrace these changes and to develop and share a clear vision of the impact on our actuarial profession. I am keen to strengthen the presence of the technology section of the SOA and bring fresh ideas and vision from a millennial actuary. Paul San Valentin, FSA, CERA, MAAA Senior Consultant Ernst & Young Houston, TX Paul San Valentin is a Senior in the Advisory Services practice of Ernst & Young LLP. He has over 8 years of experience with time spent as a consultant, and prior to that as a valuation actuary for several multinational firms. His most recent experience includes model validation, actuarial transformation, actuarial audit and model conversion. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. Paul is a graduate of Florida State University. I ve been a member of the Education committee since 2015, participating in the writing and grading of ERM exam for multiple sittings. I m also a member of various SOA sections such as Financial Reporting, Predictive Analytics and Futurism, and Technology.
I support a wide variety of education and humanitarian causes. My latest volunteer activity was assisting in the distribution of relief goods for typhoon victims in the Philippines. I ve been a user of technology during my career in the industry, but it s not until I recently shifted my career to consulting when I was exposed to the wide variety of technology that s starting to get a lot of attention outside the actuarial world. I personally believe that we as a profession are so comfortable with the traditional tools such as Excel, tend to ignore other tools that are potentially faster, more efficient and controlled, that can help us perform better at our primary task solving business problems. I plan to use my time in the council as an opportunity to facilitate with educating our profession with these new emerging technologies that can take us to the next frontier. Shyam Kolli, FSA, MAAA Consulting Actuary Milliman Atlanta, GA Shyam is a Health Actuary with Milliman. He has 11+ years of experience as a health actuary working for Milliman and UnitedHealth Group. He works on pricing and reserving for both Commercial and Medicare Advantage products. Other areas of experience include working with start-up health plans to determine capital requirements, actuarial analysis for self-insured employer health plans and provider risk sharing contract analysis. Ravi Bhagat, FSA, MAAA Actuarial Director KPMG Radnor, PA Ravi is an Actuarial Director within KPMG s Actuarial and Insurance Risk practice. Ravi has spent over 10 years in the insurance industry, the last 6 providing advisory and audit consulting services. Ravi specializes in matters related to Actuarial modernization, digital labor, process improvement, modeling, financial reporting and has deep-rooted experience with US statutory and US GAAP accounting. Ravi works with a broad spectrum of insurance and annuity products and has exposure to various reinsurance structures. Prior to joining the consulting industry, Ravi served in various actuarial roles at a mid-sized mutual life insurance company. Ravi has been a member of the technology section since 2012. Ravi has also held membership within the following sections: (1) Financial Reporting, (2) Actuary of the Future, (3) Smaller Insurance Company, (4) Education & Research, and (5) Modeling. Ravi has strong ties to the community through active involvement in various community groups, charities and schools. He volunteers his time tutoring children in elementary and high-school math. He is also an active contributor to the Heifer International organization which is a charity aimed to ending hunger and poverty around the world. Ravi believes the insurance industry is continually evolving and is becoming increasingly reliant on the effective use of technology solutions. He wants to help the society and its members embrace the unique demands that this progression places on the actuary and their abilities to leverage emerging technology and innovative solutions for activities such as assumption setting, actuarial calculations, reporting and data management (to name a few). Shane Kohls, FSA, MAAA Pricing Actuary SCOR Global Life Leawood, KS Shane is a Pricing Actuary at SCOR Global Life involved in assumption setting, modeling, and deal structure for mortality reinsurance treaties. Prior to SCOR, he held positions at AIG Life and Retirement modeling universal life and variable annuity products. In these roles he created solutions to data manipulation, processing and extract design.
