Page 5 of 5 14 Benefits and Repayment Options Under certain circumstances you may be eligible to receive a deferment or forbearance that allows you to temporarily postpone or reduce your federal and/or institutional student loan payments Postponing or reducing your payments may help you avoid default Deferment A deferment is a period when your student loan payments are postponed Generally for Perkins loans interest does not accrue during the deferment period However for institutional loans interest may or may not accrue during the deferment period Your school may require that you submit supporting documentation to prove your eligibility for a deferment For Perkins loans you may generally qualify for deferment: During a period of at least half-time enrollment in college or career school; During a period of study in an approved graduate fellowship program in an approved rehabilitation training program for the disabled or a period of service qualifying for Perkins discharge/cancellation; During a period of unemployment or inability to find full-time employment; During a period of economic hardship (includes Peace Corps service); During a period of active duty military service during a war military operation or national emergency; During the 13 months following the conclusion of qualifying active duty military service or until you return to enrollment on at least a half-time basis whichever is earlier if - you are a member of the National Guard or other reserve component of the US armed forces and - you were called or ordered to active duty while enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school or within six months of having been enrolled at least half-time Forbearance If you can t make your scheduled loan payments but don t qualify for a deferment you may be eligible for a forbearance With forbearance you may be able to stop making payments or reduce your monthly payment for up to 12 months Generally interest will continue to accrue on your student loans during the forbearance period Forgiveness Forgiveness Cancellation Cancellation and Discharge Discharge Forgiveness cancellation and discharge of your loan means that you are no longer expected to repay your loan Certain circumstances might lead to your loans being forgiven canceled or discharged such as total and permanent disability teacher loan forgiveness public service loan forgiveness etc Rehabilitation If you default on your federal Perkins and your loan has not been reduced to a judgment in litigation you may rehabilitate the defaulted loan by requesting rehabilitation and by making voluntary on-time monthly payments as determined by your school each month for nine consecutive months If you successfully rehabilitate your loan you will again be subject to the benefits included in your promissory note However you may only rehabilitate a defaulted federal Perkins once Want To Learn More About Your Options?
