2014-2015 Completion of the Data Retrieval Process (DRT) & Tax Return Transcript (TRT) Information You may use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if: You have completed and filed a 2013 Federal Tax Return You have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) You have a FAFSA Personal Identification Number (PIN) You DID NOT file as Married Filing Separately You DID NOT file as Head of Household if married You DID NOT file an Amended Federal Tax Return for 2013 You DID NOT file a Puerto Rican or Foreign Tax Return How do I use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT)? 1) To use the DRT, log on to the FAFSA website and proceed to the parent and/or student financial section where it will prompt you to enter your filing status for the 2013 Tax Year. 2) Provide the requested information for all questions to see if you are able to transfer your 2013 Federal Tax information directly from the IRS.
3) You will be directed to the IRS s website, where you will authorize the IRS to submit your tax information to FAFSA. 4) Each tax filer (both the student and parent) must list his/her complete name and address exactly as it appears on the federal tax return when retrieving the IRS tax data for the IRS-DRT to process successfully. Once all required fields are complete, click Submit.
5) If successful, the next screen will display information from the federal tax return, along with the corresponding lines on the FAFSA. If you wish to transfer this information, click Transfer Now. The USD Office of Financial Aid recommends you transfer the unaltered tax information retrieved from the IRS DRT. 6) You will then be directed back to the FAFSA website, where both the student and parent(s) must sign and resubmit your FAFSA with USD s school code (010395). If the FAFSA is not resubmitted after the DRT is used, the tax information will not transfer to USD. 7) Remember to complete the IRS DRT process for both the student and parent(s).
I used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, but my Financial Aid Portal still shows it outstanding, why is that? Make sure that you electronically signed and resubmitted the FAFSA after you used the DRT, otherwise the tax information will not transfer to USD. It can take up to a week for the updated FAFSA to be received by USD. Continue to monitor your portal for the update. How can I obtain a Tax Return Transcript if I do not want to use the Data Retrieval Tool or am ineligible to use it? If you need to obtain a Tax Return Transcript (TRT) from the IRS because you are unable to use the DRT, then you can order one online by visiting http://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript or calling the IRS at 1-800-908-9946. New for 2013: Get Transcript Online You are now able to view and print your Tax Return Transcript immediately online. Click on Get Transcript ONLINE to get started. 1) Sign in with your IRS User ID. If you do not have one, click Create an Account to sign up.
2) Fill out all necessary fields and click Send Email Confirmation Code. 3) You will receive an email with an 8-digit Confirmation Code. Enter the code in the appropriate field and click Verify Email Confirmation Code.
4) After confirming your account, complete all Personal Information fields. The information you provide must match the information of the most recent Tax Return you filed. The system will not allow you to move forward if the information does not match. ** You may select the box to proceed through the process as a guest, or you may leave it unmarked to continue and create a User ID and Password for the IRS. 5) You will then be asked to verify you identity by answering a set of four questions unique to you. Upon answering the questions, click Continue.
6) If you opt to create a User ID, you will be instructed to enter a Site Phrase and select a Site Image. This will be your tool to validate that you are on the IRS Website before entering any personal information. 7) You will also be asked to create four Security Questions and to create a User ID and Password. When you complete the form, click Submit to continue to the next page.
8) You will be redirected to the Get Transcript page seen above. If you selected to continue as a Guest, you will immediately see this screen after confiming your identity in Step 4. Select the reason you are requesting a transcript from the choice provided. For Financial Aid purposes, select Higher Education/Student Aid. Based on your selection, the IRS will provide a suggestion of which transcript to download. For Financial Aid purposes, please select the Return Transcript for 2013. Make sure your pop-up blocker is disabled, as your Return Transcript will appear in a separate window. You may save or print the Return Transcript and mail a copy to the Office of Financial Aid.
Requesting a Tax Return Transcript by Mail To request that a transcript be mailed to you, click Get Transcript by MAIL. Enter your information exactly as it appears on your federal tax return. Click Continue.
2013 For Type of Transcript, please select Return Transcript. Please select the appropriate Federal Tax Year and click Continue. 2013 You will receive this confirmation screen upon submitting your information to the IRS.
