If your life were to change significantly due to a critical illness, it s likely you ll need to stop working and focus on the most important thing your health. We hope you are never in this situation, and we know it s uncomfortable to think about it. Nevertheless, ensuring that the right financial support is in place if you do ever need it, is extremely important. You can choose to add Critical Illness Cover at an extra cost when you take out Life Insurance with Legal & General. In 2016, we paid out 181 million in critical illness claims to more than 2,700 people who found themselves in this unfortunate position. Think ahead, and let us be there for you when it matters most. What is a critical illness? You ve probably heard of the term critical illness but what does it mean? A critical illness is a state of severe ill health, which is very likely to affect a person s lifestyle. Commonly-known critical illnesses include cancer, stroke and multiple sclerosis (MS). Though our Critical Illness Cover encompasses many critical illnesses, it s important to note that it doesn t cover all of them for instance, not all cancers are included in our plans. Limitations and exclusions apply. Reasons to consider Critical Illness Cover If you are unsure as to whether you need Critical Illness Cover, as part of your life insurance policy, asking yourself a few difficult but important questions may help: If you had to stop working for a significant amount of time, or indefinitely, due to a critical illness how would you cope financially? What support do you have in place? If your partner depends on you financially or vice versa how do you plan to overcome this if the main breadwinner is critically ill? Without your wage, could your family continue with the lifestyle they re accustomed to? Who would cover household bills and living expenses? 3

Could it happen to me? Legal & General Critical Illness Cover How can Critical Illness Cover help? We can so easily say that critical illness will never happen to us, but the reality is that so many are affected. Stroke Around 152,000 people suffer a stroke each year, that s a stroke every three and a half minutes. One in four strokes occurs in people under 65 (including children and babies). Strokes are the largest cause of complex adult disability. Heart Attack There are around 175,000 heart attacks in the UK each year. Men are two to three times more likely to have a heart attack than women. Cancer Breast cancer Breast cancer is the second most common cause of death by cancer in women, following lung cancer. Research showed that more than 80% of people diagnosed survived for at least five years. Testicular cancer Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 25 to 49. Research showed that 98% of people diagnosed survived for 10 years. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) MS is not a fatal condition, and around 100,000 people currently live with the disease. MS is most often diagnosed in people in their 20s and 30s. Approximately three times as many women have MS as men. The number of people surviving critical illnesses has increased significantly in recent years, due to advancements in medical science, improved hospital care and generally healthier lifestyles. Research showed that over 80% of people diagnosed with breast cancer survived for at least five years (Cancer Research UK 2015). The number of fatal heart attacks in England has also halved in the past ten years (Department of Health 2013). Whilst it s wonderful that so many people are surviving critical illnesses, this does mean that more and more people will require financial support during their treatment, recovery and, in some instances, to cope with their critical illness on an ongoing basis. Our Critical Illness Cover plans could pay out if you are diagnosed with one of our specified critical illnesses during the length of your policy. You can find full definitions for these illnesses in our Guide to Critical Illness Cover. Legal & General additional services We also provide Legal & General Nurse Support Services (page 6-7), and for an additional cost Legal & General GP24 Service (page 8-9). These physical and emotional support services are all put in place to help you cope, and retain some order, when life is turned upside down by a serious medical condition. These physical and emotional support services are all put in place to help you cope. Age restrictions apply to our Critical Illness Cover plan. 4 5

Using our Private Consultation Concierge Service, you can quickly and easily locate private consultants, specialists and hospital facilities by speaking to a member of the concierge team or via a mobile app. You can then make an appointment for you or your immediate family at a suitable time and date. Searches can be done by specialism and location making finding the right person, and accessing safe, reliable advice and treatment a simple process. All private treatment must be referred by either your own GP or the Legal & General GP24 Service, and the cost of consultation and any resulting treatment will be funded by you. However, this service will explain the self-pay options available in your local area. Terms and conditions apply, please refer to the Policy Booklet for further information. Recent research has shown that 1 in 5 patients are currently waiting longer than the 62 day NHS target for cancer treatment, whereas those patients with mental health conditions who are referred to Improved Access for Psychological Therapies services can wait up to 18 weeks as standard. 8 9
