The benchmark ASPI index fell to 6,055.48, losing a tiny 1.44 points or 0.02%. However, the S&P SL20 managed to breathe within the green terrain yet again, closing at 3,432.03, gaining 6.26 points or 0.18%; this was derived by gains in counters such as NEST (+1.95%), CTC (+1.50%), BUKI (+0.58%), COMB (+2.89%) and SAMP (+1.41%) etc. Further, with regard to the movement in share prices, a total of 110 companies lost while only 65 gained. The gainers were headed by Associated Motor Finance Company PLC (+7.73%) and losers were led by Miramar Beach Hotel PLC (- 13.48%). The daily turnover of LKR 700.86Mn indicated a rise of 55.30% against the previous trading day. By accounting to nearly 67% of the daily aggregated turnover, John Keells Holdings PLC (JKH) led the turnover list providing LKR 468.49Mn predominantly supported by 4 blocked deals worth LKR 293.20Mn where an aggregate quantity of 1.10Mn shares were crossed at prices LKR 265/- and LKR 268/-. The counter witnessed notable on-board interest as well, being amidst the top sought after counters for the day while logging 174 trades resulting in a quantity of 656K shares changing hands. JKH reached a highest traded price of LKR 269/- within the day, however settled the day at its intraday low of LKR 260/-, dropped down by LKR 7.50/- or 2.80%. Further, foreign investors were bearish on JKH today by selling nearly 1Mn shares, accounting a net foreign selling of LKR 272Mn.Notably, the 2 banking sector counters Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC (COMB) and Sampath Bank PLC (SAMP) provided LKR 62.75Mn and LKR 18.26Mn respectively to the daily aggregated turnover whilst securing their position amidst the top subscribers. As at the day s end COMB settled the day at LKR 117.30/- (up/- (up by LKR 3.30/- or 2.89%) amidst a significant foreign interest of LKR 26.87Mn, and SAMP closed at LKR 202/- (up by LKR 2.80/- or 1.41%).

Under the sectorial round up, Diversified Holdings (DIV) dominated the rest providing LKR 475.75Mn, while accounting a share of 68% of the daily aggregated turnover. Bank Finance & Insurance (BFI) sector too provided a notable LKR 143.30Mn; further, BFI managed to capture the highest investor interest during the day noting 1,248 trades resulted in a total quantity of 4.72Mn shares changing hands. Moreover, nearly 90% of the daily turnover was accounted by the two sectors DIV and BFI. The volume for the day stood at 13.17Mn, indicating a gain of 35.16% against the previous trading day. John Keells Holdings PLC, Central Investments & Finance PLC & Textured Jersey Lanka PLC were the heavily traded counters during the day with 1.76Mn shares, 1.13Mn shares, and 1.02Mn shares respectively. Foreign investors ended their 5 day bullish run to result in a net foreign outflow of LKR 242Mn, whilst dragging the year to date net foreign inflow (LKR 16.76Bn) below the LKR 17Bn level. Foreign selling for the day amounted to LKR 503.47Mn which led by JKH (LKR 272Mn) and followed by Union Bank (LKR 5.5Mn) & National Development Bank (LKR 3.3Mn) too. Foreign buying amounted to LKR 261.47Mn, led by Commercial Bank (LKR 26.8Mn),Distilleries (LKR 4.8Mn), Ceylon Tobacco (LKR 3.3Mn). Looking at the local FOREX markets, the USD closed the day at LKR 133.20/- selling and LKR 130/- buying. Sri Lanka FDI flows reach $430mn in first half 2013 Foreign direct investment flows to Sri Lanka in the first half of 2013 reached 430 million US dollars and the full year was expected to bring 2.0 billion US dollars. The money had come mainly from Chinese and Hong Kong based companies with top sectors being tourism, mixed development projects and manufacturing. (lankabusinessonline.com) Sri Lanka 15-year bond yield falls at auction Sri Lanka's 15-year bond yield fall at auction by 11 basis points to 12.10 percent from the last auction while the a 30- year bond was unchanged at 12.50 percent. Sri Lanka last issued 15-year bonds in January 2013. The 5-year bond yield was unchanged at 11.17 percent. The debt office sold 10 billion rupees in 30 year bonds maturing in 2043 and 20 billion in 15-year bonds maturing in 2028 and 5 billion rupees of five year bonds maturing on 2018. (lankabusinessonline.com) Japan's industrial output and household spending fall Japan has posted weaker-than-expected economic data, underlining the challenges the government faces as it tries to revive the country's economy. Industrial output fell 3.3% in June, from the previous month. Compared with the same month a year ago it fell 4.8%. Meanwhile, household spending declined 0.4% from a year earlier. Analysts had expected growth of 1.0%. Japan has been trying to boost domestic consumption in an attempt to revive its stagnant economy. Earlier this year, the central bank doubled its inflation target to 2% in an attempt to boost consumer prices and spending. (bbc.co.uk) German Inflation Seen Slowing for First Time since April German inflation probably slowed in July for the first time in three months, signaling price gains in Europe s largest economy remain subdued. Germany s consumer price index, calculated using a harmonized European Union method, rose 1.8 percent from a year ago, compared with 1.9 percent in June. Prices probably climbed 0.1 percent on the month. German inflation will average 1.6 percent this year and 1.5 percent in 2014. The Frankfurt-based central bank reduced its 2013 growth projection for Germany last month to 0.3 percent from the 0.4 percent it predicted in December, citing a worse-than-expected first quarter and warned that Europe s sovereign debt crisis still poses risks to the economic recovery. Consumer price gains in the 17-nation euro area accelerated to 1.6 percent in June from 1.4 percent the previous month and 1.2 percent in April as energy prices rebounded. Data for this month will be published on July 31. The European Central Bank last month cut its 2013 inflation forecast for the region to 1.4 percent from 1.6 percent and left the 2014 estimate unchanged at 1.3 percent. (bloomberg.com)
