Accounts Across Investor Types 0.6% There are 58,230,384 accounts in the mutual fund industry as at June 2017, of which 99% is accounted for by individual investors. 99.4% There were: 55,050,836 retail investor accounts 2,807,768 HNI accounts 371,780 Institutional investor accounts. Institutional Individuals Account refers to a folio. An investor may have multiple accounts in a single fund or across funds. This is therefore not a count of number of investors, but number of accounts. 1

HNI accounts have shown positive growth to peak at 15% in Sep 2014 and moderate to 22% in June 2017. HNI Retail Data as on June 30. 2017. The ticket size for equity oriented funds is Rs.149,139 per account. This is the average asset size per account in the equity oriented funds. Ticket size is computed as assets managed for a scheme category/number of accounts for that category. 7

Retail investors had an average ticket size of Rs.78,328 per account, while HNIs held Rs. 18.66 lakh per account. Ticket size is computed as assets managed for a given investor category /number of accounts for that category. HNIs as defined as individuals investing Rs 5 lakhs and above. 8

The increase in holding period for applicability of long term capital gains to debt could be one of the reasons why more non-equity assets are being held for 2 years or longer.
