Wyoming Unemployment Insurance Claims Report, March 2018 Initial Claims Continue Downward Trend by: Patrick Manning, Principal Economist, and Michael Moore, Editor Initial Unemployment Insurance (UI) claims continued on a downward trend in March 2018 (see Figure 1), as the number of new initial claims declined by 15.9% (-317 claims) compared to March 2017. Initial claims have decreased from prior-year levels every month since September 2016. Initial Claims There were 1,674 initial claims in March 2018, compared to 1,991 in March 2017. Most industries experiened a decrease in the number of initial claims over the year, with the greatest decreases seen in construction (-140 claims, or -27.1%) and trade, transportation, & utilities (-48, or -16.8%). Increases in initial claims were seen in leisure & hospitality (16, or 5.1%), federal government (24, or 50.0%), information (two, or 25.0%), and local education (two, or 11.8%). At the county level, the greatest decreases in initial claims were seen in Natrona (-77 claims, or -25.0%), Laramie (-54, or -19.8%), and Fremont (-45, or -36.2%) counties. Continued Claims Over the year, the number of unique claimants with continued claims decreased by 11.4% (701 fewer individuals). Total continued weeks claimed decreased by 26.8% (6,680 fewer weeks claimed). Most industries saw over-the-year decreases in continued claims, with the greatest decrease in construction (-1,858 weeks, or -22.9%) and trade, transportation, & utilities (-1,177, or -37.1%). All counties showed an over-the-year decrease in continued claims, with the exception of Big Horn (40 weeks, or 12.9%), Washakie (36, or 12.1%), and Platte (two, or 0.6%) counties.
