MARKET OUTLOOK MARKET OUTLOOK Investment Objective The investment objective is to ensure that returns on policyholder s funds are consistent with the protection, safety and liquidity of such funds, while ensuring that the liabilities in respect of each of the funds are supported by a diversified pool of investments and assets, held under the respective fund wherein the asset classes, asset allocation and asset selection are compliant with the nature of liabilities, investment objective for each of the funds, IRDAI Investment Regulations and Insurance Act. Investment Strategy There are well-defined categories of funds across the risk-return spectrum. Based on the objectives and risk return profile of each fund, investments are made in various assets classes like equity and debt. The Investment team is adequately staffed and structured for effective management of respective funds and also to ensure independent checks and monitoring of investment performance. A process driven and moderate risk approach is followed. While choosing stocks in portfolio, the business model, competitive edge, management quality, sustained economic earnings, and corporate governance is assessed. The equity portfolio has a bias towards industry leaders and growth companies. In case of debt, emphasis and focus is on safety, liquidity and returns with prime importance given to duration management with a view on interest rates. Risk Control Investment risk is managed by creating a portfolio of different asset classes and of varied maturities depending on the fund objective so as to spread risk across a wide category of the investee companies, investee groups as well as the investee industries in accordance with the prudential exposure norms and regulation stipulated by the IRDA. Investment Committee which acts as the policy making body for the investment operations, periodically discusses the investment strategy, portfolio structures, performance of the portfolio and other issues relating to the investment portfolio. The Asset & Liability Management Committee reviews the asset liability management strategy, investment risk, and other related risks periodically. The Credit Committee approves the credit limit for each investee company and also does a periodical review of the existing exposure of debt investments in companies Year Gone By Markets After volatile FY16, Indian equities were up 18.5% in FY 17. MARKET OUTLOOK FY 15-16 FY 16-17 (estimates) GDP 7.6% 7.1% Q1 FY 17 Q1 started on strong note with Indian equities up 7.1% (Nifty) for the quarter. Good corporate results, forecast of above normal monsoon and continued inflows from FIIs provided support to the market. On reforms front, the second half of the budget session concluded with approval of the MMDR (Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation) Act and the Bankruptcy Code. The Government also announced measures to further liberalize FDI limits in select sectors, approved merger of SBI and its associates, cleared new aviation policy and accepted the 7th Pay Commission s recommendations. During the quarter, changes in India Mauritius tax treaty were announced. This would end the three decade old Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with Mauritius. With this amendment, India gets taxation rights on capital gains arising from sale shares acquired in a company resident in India on or after April1, 2017. On global front, US Fed kept the rates unchanged and Bank of Japan decided not to expand its monetary stimulus package, but the bigger event was Britain s decision to leave the European Union (EU). This caused some nervoursness in the global markets. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its bi-monthly monetary policy (held in April) cut the policy repo rate by 25bps to 6.50%. It also announced the new liquidity framework which states the need for durable liquidity in the system. 10 year benchmark treasury yields were flat for the quarter. Crude was up 25.5% for the quarter. Q2 FY17 Indian equities continued its upward trajectory (Nifty up 3.9%) on back of normal monsoon, improved global liquidity which fueled the risk-on sentiment (FIIs bought USD 4.8 bn during the quarter) and better than expected Q1FY17 earnings season. The month of September did see some correction due to mixed signals from developed market central banks on further monetary easing, and investor sentiment being adversely impacted by the surgical strike carried out by the Indian Army across the Line of Control. On external front, US Federal Reserve kept rates unchanged and signaled gradual hikes in the near future while European Central Bank (ECB) did not announce any fresh stimulus package and kept interest rates unchanged. Bank of England cut rate by 25 Bps. Bank of Japan (BoJ) committed to continuing stimulus until it sees a sustained rise in inflation. Q2 saw a decade-long wait finally came to an end with the passage of the Goods and Services Tax Constitutional Amendment Bill in the upper house of parliament. Post the President approval, the GST Council held its first meeting where the Council reached a consensus on the threshold turnover for a business to be covered by the GST and on the critical dual control issue. The Union Cabinet also announced pre-poning the Union Budget by a month and merging of the Railway Budget with the Union Budget from next year. 05

MARKET OUTLOOK The 10 year benchmark yields fell from 7.45% to 6.8% during the quarter. Softening of yields was witnessed due to fall in global yields, ample systemic liquidity and buying interest from foreign portfolio. FIIs bought Indian debt to the tune of USD 2.1 bn for the quarter Q3 FY17 The key event for the Q3 was government s demonetization move to tackle the problem of black economy and counterfiet notes. In an economy such as India wherein cash transactions are a significant proportion of the total (~68%), withdrawal of almost 87% of the currency in circulation from the economy was a big surprise. Indian Equities were down 5% in Q3 as continued FII outflows in emerging markets post Trump s victory in U.S. and the slowdown in domestic demand post demonetization move dampened investors sentiment. 10 year benchmark yield fell 30 bps to close the quarter at 6.52% after making a low of 6.19%. Crude was up 15.8% for the quarter as OPEC decided to cut production of oil first time in 8 years. On the macro front, the MPC unanimously decided to maintain status quo on repo rates in a surprise move citing the uncertainty of demonetization impact & upside risks to 5% CPI forecast for Q4FY17. The winter session of the Parliament was a washout with repeated disruptions in both Houses, pushing back the timeline of GST implementation. However, the GST Council did reveal the 4 tier rate structure but finer details of category classification are awaited. Rupee depreciated by 2% on the back of strong dollar and on expectation of a near-term hike in US interest rates by the US Fed. Weak equity markets and FPI outflows from fixed income markets and due to FCNB redemptions also pulled down the rupee. Q4 FY17 In Q4, Indian equities recovered sharply (Nifty up 12.1%) from December lows supported by receding concerns over a potential growth shock due to demonetization, better global risk appetite as the concerns of a faster trajectory of US Fed rate hike were abated (the US Fed increased the Federal Funds Rate by 25 bps) leading to strong foreign inflows and better than expected Q3 earnings season despite demonetization. The market sentiment was also buoyed by spectacular BJP performance in the state elections, especially in the largest state of Uttar Pradesh as this will provide further push to economic reforms. INR appreciated by a meaningful 4.5% (vs. USD) in Q3 on strong portfolio inflows ahead of change in regulatory tax regime for foreign equity investors. Crude prices corrected by 7% in Q3 as rising US output offsets production cuts by OPEC producers. On Domestic front, progress on GST was encouraging with GST Council finally resolving the contentious issue of dual control in January and passage of four key GST bills in the Lok Sabha in March. The GST rollout date is set to be 1 Jul 2017, a quarter later than the original implementation date of April, 2017. The FY18 budget, presented in February did a fine balancing act in maintaining the glide path to fiscal consolidation (3.0% of GDP by FY19 a key positive)while sustaining the spending momentum in key flagship schemes and rural infra and housing segments to support equitable growth. RBI maintained status quo on the policy rates during the quarter, but surprised the market with the shift in policy stance from accommodative to neutral signaling the end of the two year easing cycle. As a result, 10 year benchmark yield increased substantially by 44bps in February and finally ending the quarter up 17 bps at 6.68%. 06
