Aon Your Partner in Technical Risk Questions Leave your risk management to a partner who helps you with the assessment, design and improvement of your technical risk concept. After all, you have to concentrate on your essential tasks to be successful; we can give you room to focus on your core business. For more than 35 years, Aon s consulting division Risk Control, Claims & Engineering (RCCE) has been among the best consultants in Germany regarding long-run protection and safety of investments. Our team of engineers, chemists and business economists does not only look at insurance placement of the selected risks but rather on how to responsibly handle those risks inherent to the process which shall not or cannot be covered. n Avoid risk, wherever possible n Minimize risk, wherever economically appropriate n Tolerate risk, wherever justifiable We are on your side to help you find the best responses to these challenges. Just consider us to be an extension of your team. Why Aon? Aon is the leading insurance and reinsurance broker, service provider for risk management and human resources consultant. Globally 67,000 employees are working in more than 120 countries, about 1,700 alone at the 8 locations in Germany. Aon has a longstanding expertise in the subjects of technical risk management and the design of solutions tailormade to the needs of demanding clients. 2

Our Competence We develop individual safety concepts which improve your competitiveness. Our protection concepts reach beyond meeting legal requirements and providing an adequate insurance cover. Our specialists assess and analyze your risks on the basis of up-to-date scientific methods and technical processes; the results of which form the basis for a holistic risk strategy. n Neutral consultancy n Better insurability of risks allows better policy conditions n Assistance on the spot, e.g., for site surveys, planned new buildings, acceptance of the work n In-depth knowledge of both national and international codes and standards n Co-ordination of international loss prevention programs by a single contact person Fire protection From the initial concept to the acceptance free from defects, all aspects of fire protection consulting and design from a single source; even claims management, if needed Fire alarm systems Assessing needs, finding and implementing a solution, up until the final acceptance and the start-up of the system Fire extinguishing system Development of individual, cost-optimized concepts based on national and international guidelines including their implementation Plant security, intruder alarm and access control systems Protecting the business from direct internal and external security threats Business continuity management Definition of business interruption risks in order to develop and implement management programs aiming at damage control Health & safety / ergonomics Risk assessment and optimization of existing concepts Environmental risks Determination and assessment of environmental hazards and reduction of the residual risk to a minimum 3

Fire Protection Fire can cause property loss and casualty to an extent which may jeopardize a company s reputation, sales figures and ability to deliver goods. Compliance with applicable codes and standards as well as risk insurance are indispensable prerequisites to protect a company. Still they often fall short of ensuring survival after a loss. That is why adequate fire protection is vital for the existence of a company in the long run. n On-site underwriting risk analyses for fire and fire business interruption insurance n Consultation on preventive fire protection and optimization of existing concepts n Design of fire protection systems, concepts and expert opinions for new constructions or retrofit design n Protection concepts using automatic fire suppression and inert-gas systems n Design of water and gas extinguishing systems, elaboration of qualified tenders with subsequent bid review and evaluation n Installation supervision of protection systems up to the official acceptance n Construction period services n Fire action and rescue plans 4

Claims Management for a Major Damage Major fire damage, often involving environmental impairment, is a big challenge for a business. Customers, suppliers, insurers, experts, authorities and even the public expect quick responses, solutions and decisions. This situation often leads to bottlenecks and information gaps. For this type of emergency Aon provides services that reach beyond the usual level of fire protection: n Technical loss report and support with the fire investigations in the event of damage n Consultancy in strategic and conceptual reconstruction n Assistance in the reconstruction under aspects of safety, fire prevention and environmental protection n Preparation of fire protection concept required to obtain a building permit n Design, costing, planning and tendering of protection systems and assistance in selecting a bid n Construction supervision until final acceptance Learn from Experience To arm you against future loss, Aon offers to n validate the adequacy of your current safety measures n design of holistic emergency plans (crisis manual) incl. training n implement a property risk control program with periodical critical point analysis n design a comprehensive corporate business continuity management system n advise on additional constructional or technical improvements to the protection of the site and the departments not affected by the loss. 5

Fire Alarm Systems The sooner a fire is detected, the better the chance of avoiding property loss and personal injury. Sophisticated automatic fire detection systems designed and installed by skilled professionals are crucial to initiate rescue and fire fighting measures immediate and efficiently. n Optimization of existing or planned fire alarm systems n Design and planning of new fire alarm systems in line with recognized technical standards (DIN, VDE, VdS) under consideration of any official restrictions n Technical specifications, tenders and assistance in negotiations with prequalified bidders n Construction team consultation n Support service for final acceptance 6

Fire Extinguishing Systems Protection concepts relying on fire detection and manual extinction alone often fall short. The safer option is an automatic extinguishing system: operating on the spot - automatic, immediate, reliable and resistant to false alarms. Such a high level of protection does not need to be the most expensive choice. Intelligent design of fire protection concepts for new building projects can make up the absolute additional installation costs by considerable savings in building material and other protection devices. Moreover, insurers grant substantial discounts on fire and business interruption insurance for automatic extinguishing systems complying with applicable regulations. n Elaboration of detailed concepts for water or gas extinguishing systems n Agreement on any ambiguous parameters n Rough design, drawing and cost estimate n Background information on aspects beyond installation (specifying and considering the works to be borne by the client and conditions/costs of maintaining the system) n Bill of quantities and technical specification n Presenting the project to contractors, explaining the protection concept and installation options n Bid review and scoring under cost and technical aspects n Assistance from negotiation until order placement n Construction oversight until final acceptance of protection systems free from defects n Supervision of entire planning to ensure standards and budgets are met 7

Plant Security, Intruder Alarm and Access Control Systems To keep pace with the fast progress in science and technology - and, alas, in crime as well - existing security concepts call for continuous review and update to modern standards. Perimeter protection, intruder alarm and access control systems have therefore been integral parts of security concepts for decades. n Analysis of vulnerability: problem identification, survey of the premises requiring protection, intrusion assumptions n Design of protection concepts based on a detailed determination of requirements and presentation of suitable protection features n Assessment of risk and cost-efficiency n System design by recognized codes and standards (e.g., DIN, VDE, VdS) n Specifications, tenders and assistance in negotiations with prequalified bidders n Support service for installation and final acceptance of entire systems 8

Business Continuity Management The causes of business interruptions are manifold and the aim is to reduce their effect to a tolerable level of cost. Business Continuity Management (BCM) is a management task designed to identify and prevent potential causes of business interruptions. On this basis we develop and implement measures that ensure the continuation of the business processes in the case of impairments and avoid life-threatening consequences. Examination n Identify and prevent existential risks n Examine interdependencies n Analyze the supply chain n Minimize loss of earnings n Secure market presence and contractually assured services and supplies n Avert loss of confidence and reputation Planning n Limit impairments of essential production, distribution and business processes n Restore disrupted processes and process support promptly Implementation n Definition of a BCM-organization n Business continuity plan n Implementation, training and testing 9

Health & Safety / Ergonomics Preventing accidents and occupational diseases and reducing absenteeism are not only important factors of business management employers are legally obliged to ensure physical integrity and health of their employees and therefore provide adequate workplaces. In Germany, occupational health and safety is covered by the so-called dual system, i.e. laws/by-laws and combined with the rules of workers comp linked to EU-regulations. Progressive corporate philosophies excel, among others, by consistent application and proactive advancement of these rules. n Safety officer as required by German regulations BGV A2 n Safety audits, risk analyses n Risk assessment by - Labor protection law - German health and safety at work regulations BetrSichV - German ordinance for work with visual display units BildschArbV n Health & safety concepts and audits by corporate or European standards n Optimization of existing work safety concepts n Building design under aspects of work safety and fire protection n Seminars and trainings n Ergonomics consulting 10

Environmental Management More and more often businesses need to consider environmental effects into their investment decisions. In order to ensure an objective evaluation it is essential to conduct risk adjustment and to analyze premises and their surroundings. By these measures businesses improve their legal certainty and are prepared for site inspections by insurers and inquiries by pressure groups and customers. Asides the determination of the environmental risks, the analyses of existing insurance policies and weak points are part of Aon s service portfolio. The risk, however, cannot solely be covered by insurances, since many risks are uninsurable. The measures recommended by our engineers therefore aim to minimize the often underestimated environmental risk. n Analyzing the environmental risks n Database-assisted evaluation of neighborhood risks n Concept for adequate insurance coverage n Measures matrix showing recommendations to minimize environmental risks n Corporate environmental databases including individual reports and assessments n Information on environmental law and technology n Coaching, workshops and training on the topic of environmentalism in businesses 11
