Private Health Insurance For individuals and families
What is Private Medical Insurance? Private Medical Insurance (PMI) is designed to give you a choice of the level of care you receive and how, when and where it is provided. You may find that paying for treatment privately can be expensive, Private Medical Insurance is there to cover the majority, if not all of these costs for you. You won t have to worry about NHS waiting times with Private Medical Insurance as it is intended to assure you are diagnosed and treated quickly. Private Medical Insurance will sometimes also cover some drugs that are not available under the NHS.
Over 750 hospitals and facilities for you to choose from Here at General & Medical, we believe that it is important that you get to make the decision for where you want to be treated. Unlike a managed care approach, we give you and your doctor the flexibility to choose the right hospital for your needs, wherever that may be. Most of our Participating Hospitals provide a single private room with ensuite facilities for in-patient accommodation, together with a choice of menus, flexible visiting times and other facilities consistent with a modern private facility. This gives you timely access, privacy and the dedicated care and comfort you deserve.
Hospital choice We have an extensive list of facilities which we call our Participating Hospitals. Because the costs of treatment within different facilities can vary enormously, we group our Participating Hospitals into the below categories. First Choice Our First Choice Hospitals are a select group of over 300 private hospitals and clinics at locations throughout the UK, with whom we have close association. These include Spire Healthcare, Ramsay Healthcare, BMI and Nuffield facilities. If you choose our First Choice Hospitals, you will benefit from our lowest premiums Freedom Freedom Hospitals include all First Choice facilities and for a small additional premium, give members access to up to an additional 400 facilities throughout the UK which include many NHS hospitals with private facilities attached. Premium Premium Hospitals are specialist facilities, normally found in London, that due to their reputation and location are able to charge substantially more for their medical services. You can include Premium Hospitals for an additional premium.

Testimonials I ve been with General & Medical for nearly two years now, having previously been with another insurer. I have never received such first rate service. Not only are the customer relations team efficient and personable, but you nearly always deal with the same people, which greatly enhances the service as questions are understood and explained within the context of an ongoing claim. On more than one occasion they have considered my personal circumstances and each time it has greatly helped with my treatment. I can honestly say it feels like the first step in my treatment and path to recovery is not with the practitioners, but instead begins with a phone call to General & Medical. I want to thank General & Medical very much for all the help you have given me over my two new knees. The support I have had from your staff has been superb and I feel that you should know how good they have been. So very many thanks to General & Medical for such wonderful support and I am happy to be quoted on that!
Your questions answered How can I pay my premium? You have a choice of how you can pay for your policy; Monthly by direct debit which is secure and an easy way to spread the cost over the year and there are no additional charges to pay on top of your premium. Annually by direct debit, debit/credit card, BACS or cheque. Are there any age limits? You may join a General & Medical scheme as an individual from the age of 16 up to your 75th birthday. Once covered there is no upper age limit. Children under the age of 16 must be added to an adults policy. Children are classed as a child up to their 21st birthday, or their 26th birthday if they remain in full time education. Proof of full time education must be provided. How do I make a claim on my Private Health Insurance policy? You should contact your Health & Care Support Specialist before you see your consultant so that we can confirm your cover. Your Health & Care Support Specialist will be able to guide you through the process of claiming and let you know what is and is not covered. Will my premium go up at renewal? We review your premiums annually to reflect the overall cost of claims and medical inflation. Our schemes are priced using age bands, reflecting that people are more likely to claim as they get older. This means that you could see an age-related increase in your premium in addition to our general review. Your premium can be influenced by other factors such as the availability of new treatments, medical technologies and any claims made on your scheme.
