What is Verification and why was I selected? Wingate University Verification - Frequently Asked Questions Verification is a process used to verify certain information on the FAFSA to ensure its accuracy. You re not alone, about 30% of all FAFSA filers are selected for verification, which requires that you submit additional documentation to our office to ensure the accuracy of the FAFSA information. What do I have to submit? You should have received an email from our office providing a list of documents that should be submitted. You can also view an up to date list in your WinLINK account. At a minimum, you would be required to provide: 1. Verification of 2016 income (through the IRS DRT or Tax Return Transcript) 2. Copies of all 2016 W-2 Forms 3. Verification Worksheet What is the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) and why should I use it? IRS Data Retrieval is an option within the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The IRS DRT electronically transfers your federal tax return information into your FAFSA. Why Easy: Transfer info with the click of a button. Fast: Instantly retrieve your information. Accurate: Correctly fill in your information. How Log in to your current FAFSA; In the finances section you will see a Link to IRS button if you are eligible to use the IRS DRT. Click the Link to IRS button to be transferred to the IRS to retrieve your info. On the IRS site, enter your information exactly as it appears on your federal tax return and click submit. Check the Transfer My Tax Information into the FAFSA form box, and click the Transfer Now button. You will know that your federal tax return information has been successfully transferred because the words Transferred from the IRS will display in place of the IRS information in your FAFSA form. For your protection, your tax information will not be displayed on either the IRS site or fafsa.gov. Are there certain filers who should not attempt to use the DRT when selected for verification? Any tax filer whose marital status has changed from the time s/he has filed the FAFSA to present. Use of the IRS DRT will not supply enough information in these cases to accurately complete verification. Biological/adoptive parents of a dependent student who are unmarried, but live together Any filer who has completed an amended tax return Filers who have completed a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return Married tax filers who - File Married-Separately - File Head of Household and meet the special requirements regarding timing and maintenance of a separate household from their spouse -- Additional documentation of these circumstances will be requested.

What is an IRS Tax Return Transcript? Is this the same as a copy of a tax return? An IRS Tax Return Transcript is NOT the same as a copy of the 1040 Federal income tax return. Federal aid regulations prohibit the use of a copy of a signed tax return as part of the verification process. If you cannot use the IRS Data Retrieval function within the FAFSA, you must supply income and tax information for verification. To view and print your transcripts online, go to IRS.gov and use the Get Transcript tool. To order by phone, call 800-908-9946 and follow the prompts. To request an individual tax return transcript by mail or fax, complete Form 4506T-EZ. Do not list Wingate as a third-party recipient when requesting your tax return transcript. You should have the IRS send the document directly to you and then submit a copy to our office. What if I am selected for verification but will not file a Federal Income Tax Return? Students and/or parents whose income falls below the minimum filing threshold for a given tax year should complete the required Verification Worksheet and submit all W-2 forms, any other statements of income, and a Verification of Non-Filing Letter from the IRS. If evidence suggests that a student or parent should have filed, but did not, this represents conflicting information which must be resolved. Please contact the IRS directly if you have questions about the 2016 filing requirements. What is a Verification of Non-Filing Letter and where do I get one? IRS verification of parent(s) and student s tax information or non-filing status is required by the Department of Education for all U.S. citizens and permanent residents to check a student s eligibility for federal aid. If you did not file a 2016 tax return, you must request a Verification of Non-filing Letter from the IRS and submit the non-filing letter as part of your verification documents. You can request this letter online at www.irs.gov. Do not list Wingate as a third-party recipient when requesting your non-filing letter. You should have the IRS send the document directly to you and then submit a copy to our office. Will my financial aid change due to verification? During the verification process, information is compared to the original data on the FAFSA and corrections may be made. These corrections may lower or raise the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) figure. Financial need is determined by the EFC; therefore a change to the EFC could impact aid eligibility. If the verification process is completed after a student is initially awarded financial aid, changes to the original aid package may occur. The Office of Student Financial Planning will notify you of any changes to your award package. What happens if I do not complete verification? If a student who is selected for verification does not complete the verification process, then any Federal and/or State funding will not be awarded. Students who do not wish to complete the verification process must notify the Office in writing of this decision so the missing documents can be waived. Please be sure your First Name, Last Name, and Wingate University Student ID is written on each document!
