Investing outside the box MainStay Investments High Net Worth Investor Study on Non-Traditional Investments Diversification, growth, and principal protection

Executive summary In October 2013, MainStay Investments, a New York Life company, commissioned Harris Interactive to conduct a research study to learn more about the usage and perception of non-traditional and alternative investments among High Net Worth (HNW) investors. 1 The study, conducted online from October 24 to November 11, 2013 among a nationally representative sample of 806 HNW investors, covered topics related to investors interest and knowledge of alternative investments, their current use, and the perceived benefits of these types of strategies. 2 The unique research confirmed that HNW investors see non-traditional investments becoming a core holding, yet wide knowledge gaps remain. Investors who are currently utilizing non-traditional strategies are doing so to protect principal and achieve diversification and better returns. Three in five HNW investors who currently use alternative investments have increased their portfolio exposure over the past year. However, two in five HNW investors say they lack confidence in their knowledge of this area. HNW investors cited that financial professionals can play in important role in helping them overcome this challenge, with nearly 60% of investors indicating that their perception about alternative investments is influenced by their financial advisor. The study further showed that HNW investors using alternatives have allocated more than a fifth of their portfolios to alternative investments, and a quarter of these HNW investors expect their exposure to alternatives to increase over the next five years. Key findings of the new research study HNW investors are looking to alternatives for diversification, principal protection, and to achieve better returns. Financial advisors play an important role in helping HNW investors to learn about alternatives. Commodities are the most commonly held alternative investment, followed by private equity and long/short equity. A majority of HNW investors feels there is not enough information available on alternatives to allow them to evaluate their benefits as part of a portfolio. An overwhelming majority of HNW investors who have used alternatives says they would either recommend or consider recommending using alternatives to others. For most HNW investors currently using alternatives, leveraging alternative investments in their portfolio has been positive. 1. The terms investors and HNW investors as used in this report refer to the survey respondents as a whole, unless otherwise specified. 2. See page 6 for survey methodology and participant profile. 1

Seeking diversification and growth potential in non-traditional investments A key theme of the research was how HNW investors are thinking about non-traditional investing. Investors currently using alternatives list increased diversification (50%) and growth potential as the primary reasons for investing in alternatives. Three in five HNW investors (60%) also view protecting principal as a key role of alternatives. Overall, the study showed commodities are the most commonly held alternative investment, followed by private equity and long/short equity: Commodities 48%, Private equity 39%, Long/short equity 36%, Hedge funds 34%, Managed futures 30%. Among HNW investors, the most frequently utilized methods for seeking investment ideas and education about alternatives are sources advisors (60%), the internet/financial web sites (4), and research papers/reports (35%). Looking for guidance on alternatives A majority of HNW investors feels that there is not enough information available on alternatives to evaluate their benefits as part of a portfolio (6). As HNW investors look for more guidance on alternatives, they primarily seek information about potential risks (73%) and hope to gain a greater understanding of how these investments work (7). In addition, the findings also showed that HNW investors who have had conversations with their advisors about alternatives were more likely to invest than those who have not (49% to 3%, respectively). An overwhelming majority of investors who have used alternatives says they would either recommend or consider recommending using alternatives to others (88%). Alternative investments have been beneficial for most HNW investors both in terms of their experiences and results: Two-thirds of HNW investors have found utilizing alternatives to be positive (67%). The same percentage reports the effect on their portfolio has been net positive (67%). In the next five years, HNW investors overall see their exposure to alternatives increasing (26%) or staying the same (66%).
