What is Unemployment Insurance? Unemployment Insurance (UI) is an employer-paid insurance program that helps workers who are unemployed, through no fault of their own, while they are looking for work.
How do I qualify for UI? You must meet all of these requirements: Past wages: You must have earned enough wages in the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters, before you filed your claim. Last job: You must be unemployed or partially unemployed through no fault of your own. Able and available: Unless TWC exempts you from this requirement, you must be able and available to work full-time. You must seek fulltime work and keep a detailed record of your work search activities.
How will I know my benefit amount? Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) will send you a statement of benefits that includes: The four completed calendar quarters used for your claim. Wages your employer reported paying you during each quarter. Whether you earned enough wages; and The benefit amounts you may be eligible to receive.
Understanding benefit amounts The Weekly Benefit Amount is how much TWC can pay you for one full week of unemployment benefits. Your Maximum Benefit Amount is the total amount you can receive during your active claim year.
When will I receive payment? If you qualify, it can take around four weeks after you apply to receive benefits. If you do not qualify, TWC will send you a letter explaining why you are not eligible. If you disagree with TWC s decision, you have a strict deadline of 2 weeks to appeal. TWC will notify of the date and time of your telephone hearing. During this time, you must continue to job search and do your Payment Request.
How much will my payments be? After you apply, TWC sends you benefit and payment information. The law requires that TWC hold your benefits for the first payable week as the waiting week. The first payment you receive will be for the second week that you request payment. TWC pays the waiting week after you receive a total of three times your Weekly Benefit Amount.
What if I am part of a mass layoff? Your employer may provide TWC with information for part of the claim. If you are part of a mass claim TWC will send you instructions on how to complete your application for benefits and register for work. Workforce Solutions suggests that you contact TWC if you are part of a mass layoff to confirm and verify the information TWC has received.
What is a PIN? To receive payment, you set up a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). Your PIN protects your privacy because no one can access your information without your PIN. Create your PIN by following the instructions that TWC sends you.
How do I request payment? You can request payment on the Internet at ui.texasworkforce.org or by using our automated telephone system, Tele-Serv. After you complete the claim application, TWC sends you instruction on how to request payment using the Internet and Tele-Serv. You request payment every two weeks, and payment is for a two-week period.
I got wages instead of a layoff notice. If your employer paid you wages instead of giving you notice of layoff, you will not receive benefits for the period covered by those wages. However, you should file a claim and request benefit payments every two weeks. You get no money during this period, but you will have served your waiting week.
What should I do after I apply for benefits? Get Registered for Job Search if REQUIRED. Look for full-time work each week and keep a detailed log of your work search activities. Know your TWC minimum weekly job search requirements. Follow all instructions you receive from TWC. File your payment request every 2 weeks by calling Tele-Serv or online at ui.texasworkforce.org
How do I register for work search? Within three business days of applying for benefits, you must register for work search by following the instructions on the Internet job search application at www.workintexas.com or by visiting your local Workforce Solutions office.
