INTRODUCTION: The statistics illustrate the number of teachers in the Primary and Secondary / Community and Comprehensive schools sector, who retired during the period 1 January 2014 to 31 December, 2014. Primary Teachers Retired from 1 January to 31 December 2014 Summary of points from Tables and Charts 1 2 3 4 5 There was a total of 794 Primary retirements in 2014. The highest percentage of Primary retirements in 2014 were at Principal level (30%). The vast majority of Primary retirements during 2014 took place in August (81%). 85.8% of Primary retirements during 2014 were voluntary retirements. There were 654 Primary schools with retirees in 2014-548 (83.79%) of these schools had one retiree. 6 Retirees in schools in Dublin (199) and Cork (102) accounted for 38% of all retirements. 7 The most common age of retirement for Primary teachers in 2014 was age 60 (15.37% / 122 retirees). Secondary Teachers Retired from 1 January to 31 December 2014 Summary of points from Tables and Charts 1 There was a total of 629 Secondary/C&C retirements in 2014. 2 The highest percentage of Secondary/C&C retirements in 2014 were at Assistant Principal level (48%). 3 The vast majority of Secondary/C&C retirements during 2014 took place in August (85.7%). 4 82.8% of Secondary/C&C retirements during 2014 were voluntary retirements. 5 There were 322 Secondary/C&C schools with retirees in 2014-152 (47.2%) of these schools had one retiree. 6 Retirees in schools in Dublin (173) and Cork (89) accounted for 42% of all retirements. 7 The most common ages of retirement for Secondary/C&C teachers in 2014 were age 58 (13.83% / 87 retirees) and age 60 ( 13.67% / 86 retirees). APPENDIX 1 TEACHERS RETIREMENT OPTIONS: Voluntary retirement: New Entrant [ New Entrant in accordance with the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004. In general, a New Entrant is a person who commenced employment in the public service on or after 1 April 2004, or returned to employment on or after that date following a break in public service employment of more than 26 weeks]. A teacher with a minimum of 2 years of pensionable service on retirement may voluntarily retire from 65 years of age. Not a New Entrant A teacher with a minimum of 2 years pensionable service on retirement may voluntarily retire from 60 years of age; or from 55 years of age under the 35/55 year provision Compulsory retirement: A teacher who is not a New Entrant with a minimum of 2 years pensionable service must compulsorily retire at the end of the school year in which age 65 years is reached. Retirement on medical grounds: A teacher may retire on medical grounds in accordance with the terms of the schemes. Cost Neutral Early Retirement: Cost Neutral retirement allows retirement between age 50 and 60 (55 and 65 in the case of New Entrant) and provides for actuarially reduced pension benefits in lieu of preserved benefits.
