Statements & Search Criteria Mission The Nirvana Ridge Ferret Rescue (NRFR) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit and no-kill animal welfare organization, established to benefit the domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo). Our mission is to protect and provide for any ferret(s) in need, regardless of health, age or origin, until a permanent loving home can be found. Our mission includes the educational promotion of the domestic ferret as extraordinary, curious and endearing pets. Background Though we are a recently established non-profit business entity, our operators have been actively involved with ferret rescue activities since 1998. We are a network of foster homes providing shelter and care, rehabilitation, to ferrets in need. We are proactive in educating the general public about the these very inquisitive, mischievous creatures. We also offer animal boarding at several of our locations. Impact At NRFR, one of our most significant accomplishments was the rescue of approximately 32 animals (including 22 ferrets) found abandoned and neglected in a horrific hoarding situation within the city of Richmond. Our team of 4 volunteers worked relentlessly around the clock to establish suitable environments, provide for veterinary care, proper food and nutrition, and emotional comfort through human interaction. Next came the adoption process. After 4 months, 18 animals were placed in carefully screened, loving homes. The remaining 14 special needs and/or geriatric ferrets, have a permanent home at our NRFR shelter. It was a huge undertaking for our small staff, but there's no lack of devotion and compassion. Combined, our ferret knowledgeable team brings over 50 years of experience caring for these endearing animals. Our team is relentlessly committed to ensure that no ferret is left behind. Needs RFR is a small organization with limited resources. We depend upon donations to sustain the continued care that we provide our resident shelter ferrets and to support our activities. The funds raised will be utilized for the purchase of food, vitamin supplements, veterinary care, and to sustain the enrichment environment that we provide. Our team is comprised of all volunteers (no monetary compensation), so 100% of fundraising funds go directly to the benefit of the ferrets. We have all invested, and continue to invest, heavily in this labor of love to care for the sick, elderly, disabled, and often times, discarded ferrets. Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Statewide We currently have the following shelter locations in Virginia: Richmond, Culpeper, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Charlottesville; and in Durham, North Carolina.
