Strategic Elements The Nagoya Protocol & Aichi Biodiversity Target 16 First part of the target achieved: The Nagoya Protocol is in force since 12 October 2014 78 countries have ratified the Protocol to date o 6 countries of the Central & Eastern European Group o 8 countries of the Western European and Others Group o 9 countries of the Latin American and the Caribbean Group o 22 countries of the Asia-Pacific Group o 33 countries of the African Group Goal to reach 100 ratifications by COP-MOP 2

Strategic Elements The Nagoya Protocol & Aichi Biodiversity Target 16 (continued) Second part of the target: Operationalization of the Protocol requires effective implementation at the national level, i.e. o Legislative, administrative or policy measures on ABS revised or developed to meet the obligations set out under the Protocol o Relevant institutional structures established/designated o Relevant information made available to the ABS Clearing-House Interim national reports on the Protocol due in 2017 o Key to assessing progress towards Target 16

Strategic Elements The Nagoya Protocol & the ABS Clearing-House Parties and non-parties are encouraged to make information available on the ABS Clearing-House; as a first step, they need to nominate a publishing authority Parties are required to make the following information available (Article 14): o o o Legislative, administrative or policy measures National focal points and competent national authorities Permits or equivalent issued at time of access For assistance: absch@cbd.int

Strategic Elements The Nagoya Protocol & the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Direct links to targets 2.5 (food security) and 15.6 (conservation & sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems) Indirect links to other targets related to poverty alleviation, human health, global partnerships and sustainable & inclusive economic development

Invited Parties views on the Elements of a Framework Requested Secretariat to: Compile and synthesize the above views and comments submitted Compile and disseminate information related to definitions of SECs and practical applications of SECs in decision-making on LMOs;

Agenda item 15 Socio-economic considerations (Article 26) MOP 7 Requested Secretariat to (cont d): Convene online discussions; Commission a study on international agreements that may have relevance to SECs and to make the report available in the BCH Due to lack of funding the AHTEG meeting was not organised; an online discussion enabled the AHTEG to undertake certain aspects of its mandate, e.g. further development of SEC conceptual clarity. MOP 8 will: Consider outcomes from the above intersessional activities and the online discussion of the AHTEG and take a decision on the next steps

Item 16: Nagoya Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress Document: UNEP/CBD/BS/COP-MOP/8/13 MOP 8 will: Consider update on the status of ratification of the N-KLSP and related activities undertaken Consider need for further development of complimentary capacity-building, awareness raising, development of guidance, among others

Agenda item 17 Public awareness, education and participation (Article 23) Document: UNEP/CBD/COP-MOP/8/14 Background MOP 5 adopted a programme of work on public awareness, education and participation (PAEP PoW) 2011-2015 MOP 8 will: Consider the status of implementation of the PoW and, as appropriate, decide on its future need and/or necessary revisions to its elements as well as measures for improving its implementation and effectiveness
