Previous Occupants and Owners The house was the home of His Excellency Rene Massigli [1888-1988], French Ambassador to the Court of St. James s. General Charles de Gaulle used Lowndes House as his London residence between 1943 and 1945. In the late 1950s Lowndes House became the London townhouse of the Hon. Olive, Lady Baillie [1899-1975] an Anglo-American heiress, society hostess, and the last private owner of the iconic Leeds Castle. Lady Baillie s guest at Lowndes House included the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Simpson, Queen Maria of Romania, Alfonso XIII of Spain and Anthony Eden. She was a lover of the cinema and her guest list during the 1930s included Douglas Fairbanks [senior and junior], Charlie Chaplin and Errol Flynn. Post war she was on intimate terms with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and with Princess Marina of Kent, both of whom have visited Lowndes House. Curiously, she was very shy and particularly disliked any personal publicity. It is thought that Lady Baillie continued as the owner of Lowndes House to her death in 1975. The house was acquired by Lord & Lady Forte in the late 1970s as their London family home.
