I call on stock exchanges around the world to join this effort. Ban Ki-moon, 2007-2016 UN Secretary-General A United Nations initiative organized by: www.sseinitiative.org info@sseinitiative.org

Introduction Mission The mission of the SSE is to build the capacity of stock exchanges to promote corporate sustainability and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals Methods Different from other initiatives, SSE leverages a unique global network of stock exchanges to promote change. Through three key functions (Consensus Building, Research and Capacity Building), the SSE engages a range of stakeholders (policymakers, regulators, exchanges, investors and companies) to deliver practical tools for promoting sustainable business. Impact Leveraging stock exchanges as a force multiplier, the SSE is impacting the way entire markets address sustainability issues such as sustainability reporting and green finance. The SSE Model Guidance campaign, for example, has already changed the market expectations around sustainability reporting in 23 markets around the world, and this is only the beginning. Donor Support Donor engagement is central to our activities. Given the nature of our work, we rely on government support to scale up our efforts and achieve greater impacts to enable changes in the stock markets worldwide. www.sseinitiative.org info@sseinitiative.org

Why Stock Exchanges? Stock exchanges are a force multiplier. Moving the beyond incremental change efforts of promoting corporate sustainability one company at a time, we can promote it an entire market at a time. Stock exchanges have a unique voice in the market, promoting sustainability as a mainstream value among companies. CEOs listen. www.sseinitiative.org info@sseinitiative.org

The SSE and the SDGs The SSE has identified 5 relevant goals that stock exchanges are well positioned to effect positive change: Target 5.5 Ensure women s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life. Target 8.3 Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services. Target 12.6 Encourage companies, especially large and trans-national companies to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle. Target 13.3 Improve education, awareness raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warming. Target 17.16 Enhance the global partnership for sustainable development complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technologies and financial resources to support the achievement of sustainable development goals in all countries, particularly developing countries. www.sseinitiative.org info@sseinitiative.org

Why SSE? Unique global network Over 60 stock exchanges representing over 70% of listed Equity Markets with 30,000 companies and USD 55 trillion market capitalization 38 out of 60 exchanges are from developing and least developed countries SSE aims to enhancing the global coverage especially in the Global South We aspire to strengthen the collaboration among countries, encouraging the flow of expertise and best practices between developed and developing world We strive to respond to the vast demand of capacity building for the stock exchanges especially in the developing countries Facilitate a peer-to-peer dialogue among global exchanges to explore how they can work together with investors, regulators and companies, to enhance transparency and performance on ESG issues. www.sseinitiative.org info@sseinitiative.org

3 pillars of SSE initiative Providing guidance and training on best practices for policy makers and stock exchanges Capacity Building Assisting stock exchanges with the development of sustainability indices and other practical outputs Conducting workshops to increase sustainability awareness and educate sustainability practices Consensus Building A peer-to-peer learning platform A neutral multi-stakeholder forum Partners with other multilateral organisations Research Conducting research on current stock exchange and regulatory initiatives Providing a database Offering a library of publications on sustainability measures and reporting practices www.sseinitiative.org info@sseinitiative.org

Research Publically available Fact Sheets covering 82 stock exchanges inform investors and stakeholders about exchange efforts to advance sustainability Challenge: Through continuous research efforts, SSE has acquired abundant knowledge and data, however due to lack of R&D resources, our database is in a primary stage with a very basic user interface. We would like to upgrade our database, to expand content and ensure accessibility via a more user-friendly web interface. All fact sheets available: www.sseinitiative.org/data/fact-sheets/

Consensus Building CEO Dialogues Since February 2015, the SSE, has organized 3 Regional Dialogues in South East Asia, Latin America, and the Nordics. The events featured more than 400 participants in total involving Ministers of Finance, stock exchange CEOs and capital market regulators. These events are relevant tools for building regional consensus and fostering local action. Gender Equality, Climate Change, Green Finance and the Sustainable Development Goals are some of the topics featured in special SSE Executive Dialogues, SSE Leaders Luncheons and special events like the Ring the Bell for Gender Equality series.

Capacity Building The Model Guidance Campaign A global campaign utilizing the SSE s voluntary technical tool to assist stock exchanges in guiding their listed companies on the issue of sustainability disclosure. ESG Reporting - Measurable impacts on markets Challenge Campaign Impact At the start of the project, less than 1/3 of Exchanges offered a Guidance to issuers on reporting on ESG factors. An SSE coordinated campaign supported by investors and companies globally asking exchanges to enhance corporate ESG disclosure in their markets. Real time web monitoring: www.sseinitiative.org/engagement/esgguidance Aiming to have all World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) stock exchanges and SSE Partner Exchanges providing listed companies with guidance on reporting ESG information. We have accomplished half of the targets, with another half in progress.

Moving forward To facilitate more comprehensive and productive engagement on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. To increase transparency listed companies by removing disclosure barriers to enable more informed investor decision- To expand interaction through partnerships to get a deeper understanding of how investors are currently using available ESG information. making, and investors by disclosing information about their investments and their ESG exposure. To lead a collective effort to further education on ESG information through seminars, working groups, surveys, and workshops to share insights and best practices on ESG issues. To carry out empirical research and relevant studies on the benefit of ESG integration in investment decisions. To get involved in exchanges sustainability-related initiatives to create a market with international standards in place. Investors to increase interaction with issuers and exchanges on ESG issues. Regulators to adopt a more proactive and collaborative approach with companies to seek out genuine opportunities for commercial and social benefit. Additional actors in the investment value chain to join the conversation on mainstreaming ESG integration.

Moving forward Stock Exchanges are encouraged to: Become an SSE Partner Exchange and join the World Federation of Exchanges' sustainability working group. Utilize resources in the SSE website's Data and Research section for guidance on advancing sustainability in their market(s) Commit to at least one action to advance the UN SDGs, for ideas see the SSE Report on Progress. Investors are encouraged to: Join the PRI s SSE Investor Working Group to engage with exchanges and regulators to advance the disclosure of sustainability strategies among listed companies. Increase interaction with issuers, policy makers and exchanges on ESG issues. Enhance disclosure on how ESG information is incorporated into the investment process. Companies are encouraged to: Join the Global Compact s SSE Corporate Working Group, lend your voice to the discussion, and encourage your stock exchanges to undertake sustainability activities. Support global discussion on a baseline listing standard to improve transparency. Regulators and Policy Makers are encouraged to: Create the regulatory environment that supports long-term approaches towards investment and that encourages transparency on material ESG factors that meets investor needs. All stakeholders are encouraged to: Consider organizing local events and workshops and to reach out to the SSE with suggestions and new ideas to drive the discussion forward.
