Personal Sick Pay Paying you an income if you can t work because of an accident or illness

Personal Sick Pay How it works when you can t Personal Sick Pay is a type of income protection insurance which helps replace some of the money you d lose if you were unable to work. We naturally insure all those things important to us, such as our home, the car and even the pets. So it makes sense to protect the thing that pays for it all you and your income. This brochure helps explain what Personal Sick Pay from LV= is and how you and your family might benefit from it. This brochure is an overview of what Personal Sick Pay from LV= can offer you. For more information about all of the options available and advice on whether Personal Sick Pay is appropriate for you, please speak to your financial adviser. You can also find more information in the Policy Summary and Policy Conditions. Contents 3 Personal Sick Pay is an everyday essential 4 Protecting the home and lifestyle you ve worked hard for 5 How to claim 6 Why choose LV=? 7 Member benefits 2

Personal Sick Pay is an everyday essential At LV=, we believe everyone should be protected in life and our Personal Sick Pay has been designed with this in mind Why do I need to protect my income? According to Which? (the consumer advice magazine) income protection is the insurance policy every working adult should consider, because no matter how well you feel today, ill health or an accident can happen to anyone, at any time. And if it does, it can be tough to cope financially as the bills don t stop coming in just because you re sick. State benefits can be hard to claim on and were never designed to support the lifestyle most people are used to. And savings don t usually last long. How does Personal Sick Pay work? Quite simply, we ll pay you if you re unable to carry out the main tasks of your normal job, providing you aren t doing any other paid or unpaid work (unpaid work is work you don t get paid for like, voluntary work). By main tasks we mean the things which can t reasonably be left out of your role, or changed by you or your employer. And it doesn t matter what the illness or accident is, if it stops you from working, we ll pay you your insurance. Your Personal Sick Pay will keep paying out until you re able to go back to work, or until your insurance comes to an end (whichever comes first). And at the start of the claim you ll be able choose for us to pay you either weekly or monthly, whichever suits your needs and circumstances. If you re not working at the time of a claim, we ll use a different way to see if we can pay you. Please see the Policy Conditions for further information. Will the price go up in the future? Yes. The price you pay at any one time is based on how much Personal Sick Pay you have and how old you are. This means the price will go up as you get older because the risk of ill health increases with age. For example, at age 35 you would pay the price for a 35-year-old and then at age 36 it would go up a little to the price for a 36-year-old and so on. Don t worry; your financial adviser will be able to explain how this works in more detail. What can I spend the money on? You can spend the money on whatever s important to you; from the essentials to the fun stuff. And if you re entitled to state benefits we won t reduce the amount we pay you. However, you may find that the government will reduce some of your means tested state benefits as a result of the money you receive from us when you claim. Don t worry, your adviser can help explain this to you. Budget version If cost is an issue, our budget version will help you benefit from quality financial protection, but at a cheaper price. The only difference is we ll pay you for a maximum of 24 months for any one claim. And once you ve claimed, your policy will continue (we won t cancel it, although you ll need to have been back at work for at least six months between claims). Will my Personal Sick Pay keep up with inflation? You can choose for your Personal Sick Pay to keep up with inflation and if you choose this option, we ll increase how much we d pay you if you claimed in line with the Retail Prices Index and re-calculate how much you ll pay for the new amount. Who can apply? To apply for Personal Sick Pay, you must meet the following when your policy starts: be a UK resident for at least two years (and registered with a GP for two years) be aged 17 to 59 be employed or self-employed you can insure up to 60% of your current earned income (subject to a maximum cover amount of 8,333 a month and a minimum cover amount of 500 a month). Personal Sick Pay has no cash in value at any time. If you stop paying your premiums, your cover may stop and you won t get any money back. Personal Sick Pay doesn t pay out if you become unemployed. Personal Sick Pay Paying you an income if you can t work because of an accident or illness 3

Protecting the home and lifestyle you ve worked hard for I thought it would never happen to me When you re fit and healthy and feeling secure in your job, it s hard to imagine anything going wrong I thought it would never happen to me is something many of our customers say when we re helping them through the claims process after they ve had an accident or fallen ill. Fortunately, their financial advisers had recommended they take out protection with us; and we quickly and efficiently dealt with their claims. Unexpected extras Illness often brings additional (and unexpected) financial costs; 4 in 5 people living with cancer are 570 worse off compared to before their diagnosis 1. And people living with a disability pay approximately 550 a month more in living costs 2. Won t the state look after me? Unfortunately, government benefits pay a lot less than many people think. For example, if you were only relying on Employment and Support Allowance (formally known as Incapacity Benefit), the maximum benefit you d get is just 109.65 a week (if you re aged over 25 and in the support group). 109.65 might just cover the weekly family shop, but what about your mortgage or rent? And then there s the other usual bills that still need paying. There are no guarantees you ll get any support from the state. Centre of Economic and Social Inclusion (CESI) show 10.8 million households (or more than 60% of working families) would be entitled to little or no state support if the breadwinner had to stop working. How much ( ) week How much ( ) month How long Statutory Sick Pay 89.35 387.18 28 weeks ESA assessment phase* Up to 73.10 316.77 13 weeks ESA work-related activity group** Up to 102.15 442.65 n/a ESA single person placed in support group*** Up to 109.65 475.15 n/a The amounts given in this table are based on adults aged 25 or over Am I eligible for this if I m self-employed? people in permanent work x self-employed people in permanent work self-employed people in permanent work self-employed people in permanent work self-employed What state benefits are available? Statutory Sick Pay - if you can t work because of an accident or illness and aren t entitled to sick pay from your employer, you might be able to get Statutory Sick Pay. This is paid for a maximum of 28 weeks; after this time you might be awarded Employment & Support Allowance. But if you re self-employed, you won t be entitled to any Statutory Sick Pay. Employment & Support Allowance (ESA) - Employment & Support Allowance is not paid in addition to Statutory Sick Pay and is awarded to people who can t work because of an illness or disability. During the first 13-week assessment phase*, the government determines whether your illness or injury affects your ability to work. If the government decides you are unfit to work, you ll either be placed in the work-related group** (and have to go to regular interviews with an adviser) or the support group*** (you won t have to attend interviews as you ll be considered having an illness or disability which severely limits what you can do). LV= don t take into account any state benefits you may be entitled to if you re unable to work. However, payments from our Personal Sick Pay policy may affect your eligibility to claim some state benefits and the amount you re able to claim. 1 MacMillan: Cancer s Hidden Price Tag 2 Scope: Priced out: ending the financial penalty of disability by 2020. 4
