SELECT YOUR SECTORS Respond to Market Cycles with Agility and Precision

ECONOMIC CYCLES & SECTORS The economy moves in cycles. Specific sectors may outperform or underperform during different phases, driven by cyclical factors such as corporate earnings, interest rates and inflation. For a sector rotation strategy around a core US equity exposure, investors can use ETFs to increase their allocation to sectors expected to outperform because of cyclical trends, and decrease their allocation to sectors that are expected to underperform. MID-CYCLE LATE-CYCLE XLE Energy XLK Technology XLI Industrials XLB Materials SPY Core US Equity XLY Consumer Discretionary XLU Utilities RECESSION XLP Consumer Staples XLF Financials XLV Health Care EARLY RECOVERY Recession A contraction in economic activity as profits decline and consumer expectations begin to bottom out. Industrial productivity is no longer declining, but not increasing. Businesses do not increase their production levels until they believe consumers are actually ready to spend again. Monetary policy becomes very accommodative to stimulate growth. Early Recovery Economic growth (as measured by GDP) moves from negative to positive. Consumer expectations and industrial production begin to rise, while corporate profits increase as margins expand. Monetary policy remains accommodative and interest rates bottom out. Mid-Cycle Typically, this is the longest phase of the business cycle, marked by strong credit markets and continued improvement in corporate profitability as well as economic growth. Monetary policy remains accommodative, but less so than in the early phase. Consumer expectations and productivity levels remain elevated. Late-Cycle Economic growth rates stall as monetary policy becomes restrictive to cool an over-heated economy. Consumer expectations fall more sharply and productivity levels start to drop. Credit markets begin to tighten as fresh capital becomes scarce and corporate profits decline. Source: State Street Global Advisors, as of 9/30/2015. For Illustrative Purposes Only. Diversification does not ensure a profit or guarantee against loss. Risks associated with equity investing include stock values which may fluctuate in response to the activities of individual companies and general market and economic conditions. ETFs trade like stocks, are subject to investment risk, fluctuate in market value and may trade at prices above or below the ETFs net asset value. Brokerage commissions will reduce returns. Index-based ETFs are passively managed and seek to track an index of securities. Expenses may cause the ETF s returns to deviate from the returns of the index. Passively managed funds invest by sampling the index, holding a range of securities that, in the aggregate, approximates the full Index in terms of key risk factors and other characteristics. This may cause the fund to experience tracking errors relative to performance of the index. Investing in foreign domiciled securities may involve risk of capital loss from unfavorable fluctuation in currency values, withholding taxes, from differences in generally accepted accounting principles or from economic or political instability in other nations. The whole or any part of this work may not be reproduced, copied or transmitted or any of its contents disclosed to third parties without SSGA s express written consent. Select Sector SPDR Funds bear a higher level of risk than more broadly diversified funds. All ETFs are subject to risk, including the possible loss of principal. Sector ETFs products are also subject to sector risk and non-diversification risk, which generally results in greater price fluctuations than the overall market. Because of their narrow focus, sector investing tends to be more volatile than investments that diversify across many sectors and companies.
