Executive Summary The All Groups CPI was 111.62 in the month of October 2018, compared with 110.36 in the month of September 2018. The monthly change, October 2018 compared to September 2018, was a slight decrease of 1.14 percent (1.14 index points). This is compared to a monthly increase of 1.17 percent in the previous month of September 2018.The most significant monthly price increases were Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas (+2.11 percent). This was mainly due to increases in prices of electricity and water (Chart 2). Over the twelve months to the month of October 2018 (inflation rate), the All Groups CPI increased 3.98 percent (3.98 index points), compared with a decrease of 3.46 percent over the twelve months to the month of September 2018. Consumer Price Index (CPI) October2018 General Inflation rate: All Groups CPI, October 2018 The rate of inflation for October 2018 is the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the twelve-month period, from October 2017 to October 2018. The All Groups CPI increased 3.98 percent (+3.98 index points) over the twelve months to October 2018 compared to 3.46 percent over the twelve months to September 2018. The All Groups CPI monthly change for October 2018 was a decrease of 1.14 percent. This is compared to a decrease of 1.17 percent recorded for September 2018. General Inflation rate: Selected Groups, October 2018 The rate of inflation for Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas are the most significant items in the consumer basket in terms of expenditure and have the largest weighted influence on the All Groups CPI. Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages experienced a monthly decrease of 0.43 percent. This was due to falls in the cost of some food items. As a result, the year on year inflation increased to 5.73 percent in October 2018. This is compared to the year on year inflation of 5.47 percent experienced in September 2018. Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas experienced a monthly increase of 2.11 percent. The year on year inflation decreased to 1.34 percent in October 2018. This is compared to the year on year inflation increase of 3.29 percent experienced in September 2018.

The increase was mainly the result of higher prices of Fish (+23.23%). Clothing and Footwear recorded a decrease of 7.75 percent compared to an annual increase of 8.00 percent in September 2018. Most of the downward contribution came from prices on garments of women 1.16 percent due to price decreases on clothing. Restaurant & Hotels increased by 7.27 percent in October 2018 compared to 7.15 percent recorded for the year September 2018. The increase was mainly the result of prices of Restaurants, cafés and the like(s). Most of the upwards contribution came from prices of restaurants (+12.22%). Transport showed an annual increase of 5.40 percent for the year October 2018 compared to 4.75 percent recorded for the year September 2018. Most of the upwards contribution came from operation of personal transport equipment 8.49 and transport services 3.73 percent. Miscellaneous Goods & Services recorded a decrease of 6.66 percent compared to an annual increase of 4.98 percent in September 2018. Most of the upwards contribution came from prices on personal care (+8.33). Major contributions (negative): In general, no groups showed a significant negative annual change for the the year of October 2018.

Most of the upwards contribution came from prices on Water supply and Miscellaneous services (+5.82%) and Electricity, Gas and other fuels (3.85%). Tobacco & Narcotics registered an increase of 3.39 percent during the month of October 2018. Most of the upwards contribution came from prices on tobacco (+3.51%) and chewing Miraa/Khat (+3.33%). The increase was impacted by normal volatility in prices for khat. Major contributions (negative): In general, no groups showed a significant negative monthly change for the month of October 2018.
