MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: HR Investment Center Members Matt Cinque, Managing Director DATE: March 12, 2009 SUBJECT: Benchmarks for the Second Half of 2008 & 12 Months Ending 12/31/08 Please find enclosed the HR Investment Center s benchmarks reflecting performance for the calendar year 2008 as well as July December 2008. This correspondence contains medians for 13 metrics that comprise the Center s benchmarking initiative. This report includes the first 12-month reporting for three metrics added in 2008 two vacancy metrics calculated using open requisitions and time-to-fill for all employees. Thanks to the full or partial responses from 221 member hospitals, the subsequent report offers further analyses regional cuts, quartile rankings, and segmentation based on case mix. If you have a need for specific data points that you do not find in this report or suggestions for additional data cuts, please do not hesitate to contact me by email (cinquem@advisory.com) or phone (202-266-5499). The HR Investment Center is committed to this initiative in the long-term, and we want to ensure that we are providing data in the most usable format. For those hospitals that have yet to submit data for 2008, I would encourage you to do so using the online worksheet at www.advisory.com/hric. Even late, this data will be valuable for identifying metric trends. In closing, I would like to thank the participating member organizations and, in particular, the HR executives, directors, managers and analysts who pulled this data together. As more and more hospital and health system HR departments seek to elevate their strategic profile in their organizations, this data will help to make the case for greater investment in and focus on human capital. 1
