Budgeting forms a key part of the module and is designed so that students can prepare budgets up to and including The Master Budget. The module is designed to introduce students to more complex decision making, as well as providing an insight into selected techniques within the modern manufacturing environment. Business graduates working across all sectors may need to make decisions with regard to pricing, allocation of scarce resources, special contract pricing and other performance management areas of their organisation. This module is relevant to both Irish & International students as the skills & techniques are global skills, required in all business settings. Learning Outcomes On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to 1. Establish relevant cash flows for decision making and apply these principles in a variety of business situations. 2. Apply and evaluate a variety of pricing techniques. 3. Identify and discuss the impact of current developments in management accounting on measuring, evaluating and improving organisational performance. 4. Explain and discuss budgetary control, including the budgetary control process, the stages of budgeting and the behavioural issues associated with the budgetary process. 5. Compile and evaluate budgets for all areas of a business (eg sales, production, raw materials usage, raw materials purchases, labour, overheads and master budget). Teaching and Learning Strategies Teaching & Learning will take place through lectures and small group tutorials. This module will have a practical focus and students will have material in advance of class, on the on-line learning system. Question packs will be used in class.
Page 2 of 5 Assessment Strategies Assessment will have a practical and applied focus. Repeat Assessment Procedures Repeat assessment will be in the form of a 2-hour repeat examination paper. Fixed & Flexible Budgeting, Introduction to standard costing and calculation of basic standards using a Marginal Costing Approach. Zero Based Budgeting, Incremental Budgeting & Rolling Budgets. Decision making 40% CVP (Cost-Volume-Profit) analysis, in a multi-product setting, including graphical representation Application of relevant costing principles for the following decisions: Pricing special orders: Scarce resources: Make or buy & Discontinuation decisions. Linear programming including graphical representation Pricing Decisions 10% Pricing policy and the market - the factors that influence the pricing of a product or service. Cost plus pricing - full-cost & marginal-cost pricing Pricing strategies including market skimming and market penetration for new products.
