MARKET REVIEW Shri V. Chandrasekaran CIO - Debt DEBT MARKET REVIEW RBI in its Third Quarter Review of Monetary Policy 2012-13, slashed short term lending (Repo) rate by 0.25 percent to 7.75 percent from 8 percent. Banks net average borrowings under the RBI's LAF stood at Rs 1,04,110 crore, marginally lower compared to the previous day's figure of Rs 1,04,340 crore. Similarly, the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate, determined with a spread of 100 basis points above the Repo Rate, and also the Bank Rate stand adjusted to 8.75 percent. RBI also slashed the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 25 basis points to 4 percent from 4.25 percent of Net Demand and Time Liability (NDTL) to be effective from fortnight beginning 9th Feb 2013. As a result of this 180 billion will be injected into the banking system. Whereas it kept SLR unchanged at 23 percent of NDTL. The Central Bank kept Statutory Liquidity Ratio unchanged at 23%. RBI lowered the GDP growth projection for the current fiscal to 5.5 percent from 5.8 percent projected earlier and inflation projection for Mar-13 lowered to 6.8 percent from 7.5 percent. Money Supply growth projection scaled down to 13 percent from 14 percent while Non food credit growth projection is retained at 16 percent keeping in view the seasonal pattern for last quarter. The Current Account Deficit (CAD)/GDP ratio reached its highest ever peak of 5.4 percent of GDP in Q2 of 2012-13. CAD has widened mainly due to worsening of trade deficit. The central bank has also made the CAD and the implication of the Governments upcoming budget on the fiscal deficit key triggers for Indian Bonds. WPI inflation projection revised downwards the baseline from 7.5 percent to 6.8 percent for March 2013 considering expected moderation in non-food manufactured product inflation, domestic supply demand balance and global trends in commodity prices. Interbank call money rates moved in a narrow range of 7.80-8.15% during most of the month. However the rates ended sharply up at 8.50-9.50% as the state owned banks avoided lending on the last day of quarter. CBLO rates ended at 7.74%. RBI conducted auction for the securities 8.12% GS 2020, 8.20% GS 2025 and 8.30% GS 2042 for a notified amount of Rs 12,000 cr. The cut off for the securities came in at 7.92%, 8.03% and 8.13% respectively. All the three securities were fully subscribed. The bid cover ratio was at 2.78 as compared to 2.85 in the previous auction. The benchmark 10-yr security 8.15% GS 2022 closed at 7.91% 3 bps higher w-o-w. The G-sec market traded flat ahead of the monetary policy release. The G- sec yields inch higher ending to 1 month highs, as the auction cut-offs were in line with the expectations. Indian Rupee closed stronger at Rs 53.19 against the U.S Dollar on 31st January 2013 from the previous day's close of Rs 53.25. The RBI in its monetary policy expressed its concern about surging current account deficit, global commodity price threats and the deteriorating asset quality of banks. The RBI allowed primary dealers to borrow up to 50% of their Net Owned Funds in overnight call money markets for investment in corporate bonds. Outlook: In the next month, we expect short term yield to firm up due to liquidity crunch and long term yield soften as the effect of repo rate cut and centre's fiscal consolidation measures kick in. Shri Nobutaka Kitajima CIO - Equity EQUITY MARKET REVIEW Uptrend in the equity market continued in the month of January with RBI finally cutting the benchmark repo rate by 25bps and also the CRR by 25bps, and the government announcing its first step towards deregulation of diesel price. In January, Nifty and Sensex were up 2.2% & 2.4% respectively after seeing a similar gain in December. The corporate earnings season started on a good note with heavyweights like Infosys and Reliance surprising positively. However, IIP for Nov came in lower at -0.1% which was largely in line with consensus expectations of 0.1%. Among the sectors IT was the biggest outperformer in January with stellar results from Infosys, HCL Tech and TCS, the IT index was up ~13%. Oil & gas sector also did well, led by ONGC and HPCL, buoyed by government's authorization for OMCs to hike diesel prices. Banks had a steady month with Axis, ICICI and HDFC Bank all reporting strong quarterly numbers. Capital flows: The FIIs were net buyers during January to the tune of Rs 22059.20 crore. FII have invested to the tune of INR 77858.80 crore in equity market while selling stocks worth Rs 55799.80 crore. (Source: SEBI) Outlook: The key event in the month of February is the Union Budget, in which the government has to tackle the rising fiscal deficit while addressing political demands for populism. Although the government has already introduced a slew of reforms - be it diesel and petrol price hike, FDI in retail and aviation or deferral of GAAR; it remains to be seen if the Index Price as on 31/01 /2013 1Month Absolute Return government's policy initiatives would bring investment to healthy levels that can trigger the uptick in GDP growth. Other thing to watch is inflation related figures. If the situation improves, we could see further easing of the rates by the RBI in its next policy meet in March.
