MARKET REVIEW DEBT MARKET REVIEW Shri V. Chandrasekaran CIO - Debt Further to our outlook last month, the short term yields firmed up due to quarter end/ year end pressures while the long term yields which were falling upon the rate cut expectation, started rising. Further to this Consumer Price Index (CPI) came in at 10.91%, Wholesale Price Index (WPI) came at 6.84% and Current Account Deficit (CAD) rose to 6.7 per cent of GDP. The long term yields continued to rise further post monetary policy review on 19th March 2013, where repo rate reduced by 25 basis points to 7.5 per cent. The policy document had a hint of limited scope of further rate cuts, at the same time political uncertainty resulted from DMK withdrawing its support to the UPA Govt. Following is the status of various parameters as on March 2013: lthe Call & CBLO rates were at 14.48% & 12.47% respectively as on 28th march 2013. lthe 1 year and 5 year OIS ended at 7.47% (7.62%) & 7.22% (7.24%) respectively as on 28th march 2013. lrbi infused Rs. 113580, 940 and 2500 crores in the repo auction on 28th, 30th and 31st March 2013 respectively and absorbed Rs 35335 and 26215 crores on 30th and 31st March 2013 respectively in the reverse repo auction. lpsu banks issued 3 months and 1 year CD in the range of 8.70% - 8.90% and 9.50% - 9.60% respectively. lthe 10 year bond (8.15% GS 2022) ended at 7.95% up by 5 bps. Outlook We expect short term yield to ease as the new financial year beginning with government spending kicking in. However they could trend upward by mid April. The long term yields are likely to show a positive bias with expectations of further fiscal consolidation measures from government and rate cut expectation in the next policy on 3rd May 2013. EQUITY MARKET REVIEW Shri Nobutaka Kitajima CIO - Equity After seeing sharp correction in the month of February, the equity markets were sideways and gave flat returns in the month of March despite RBI continuing its monetary easing policy-reduced its benchmark rates by 25 bps in its mid-quarter review. The Sensex was down 0.1% and the Nifty was down 0.2% in March. Withdrawal of political support by a key government ally made the markets jittery as the government's support in the lower house further dwindled. Political stability was further jeopardized with reports suggesting another ally (providing outside support) may follow suit, raising prospects of an early election. On the global front, the Cyprus crisis and subsequent bailout arrangement renewed eurozone concerns. Among the sectors FMCG, pharma and IT outperformed in March. BSE FMCG index was up to 4.9%, pharma index was up 2.53% & IT index was up 2%. Bankex, realty, telecom, energy and auto indices were down. Bankex was down 1.29%; private banks came under the scanner with allegations of involvement in money laundering practices by a local media house. Telecom stocks were down by negative news - the DoT is charging telcos ~Rs 27.6bn for continuing operations after licence cancellation in Feb 2012. Midcap and smallcap index were down 2.55% and 6.47% respectively. Benchmark Index Latest Price 1 Month 3 Months 6 Months CNX Nifty Index 5682.55 (0.18) (3.82) (0.36) S&P BSE SENSEX 18835.77 (0.14) (3.13) 0.39 S&P BSE Small-Cap 5804.65 (6.47) (20.94) (17.29) S&P BSE Mid-Cap 6142.06 (2.55) (13.41) (7.04) S&P BSE 100 5678.70 (0.72) (4.93) (0.40) S&P BSE 200 2287.96 (0.87) (5.53) (0.85) S&P BSE 500 7084.96 (1.10) (6.44) (1.69) Benchmark Index Latest Price 1 Month 3 Months 6 Months S&P BSE AUTO Index 9994.23 (4.44) (12.17) (4.02) S&P BSE BANKEX 13033.35 (1.29) (9.05) (0.80) S&P BSE Capital Goods 9017.59 (1.82) (17.30) (17.70) S&P BSE Consumer Durables 7094.55 (1.08) (7.36) 2.23 S&P BSE IT 6885.46 1.94 21.07 16.26 S&P BSE Health Care 8008.09 2.53 (1.47) 6.37 S&P BSE METAL Index 8758.32 (3.41) (20.68) (16.81) S&P BSE OIL & GAS Index 8326.6 (3.72) (2.16) (3.87) S&P BSE Power Index 1646.5 (5.59) (16.91) (19.64) S&P BSE FMCG 15321.9 4.99 0.55 8.39 Capital flows The FIIs were net buyers during February to the tune of Rs 9123.90 crore. FII have invested to the tune of Rs 66766.60crore in equity market while sold stocks worth Rs 57642.70 crore making. (Source: SEBI) Outlook After a 25 bps rate cut in March, it is generally expected that the RBI will continue its monetary easing cycle, albeit at a moderate pace, benchmark repo rate is widely expected to be reduced by another 25-50 bps during the remainder of 2013. In the third quarter of 2012-13, CAD reached to 6.7% of GDP and stood at 5.4% in the first nine months of the current financial year against 4.1% a year ago and has brought forth the pressures on the external sector. Moderation in commodity prices (oil, gold in particular) along with a renewed thrust on exports can lead to lower CAD next year (FY14E) and contribute to lower stress on the external sector. In April, we will see announcement of fourth quarter and FY13 annual results. Q4 results are expected to be mixed with discretionary spending continuing to go down negatively impacting select FMCG and auto stocks. India's banks should also record a relatively soft quarter; NIMs should hold; but asset quality deterioration is likely to persist. But the pace of deterioration in asset quality may show noticeable moderation. IT sector positively surprised in the third quarter on the organic growth front. It is quite likely that there could be an improvement in guidance of the IT companies for the next fiscal year. 3
