Getting approved for a new credit card with a massive sign-up bonus is an exciting moment. The only obstacle between you and those points/miles is the minimum spending. If you are new to earning credit card rewards, it can feel like there s a lot to learn at once. One of the fastest ways to earn credit card rewards points is through a sign-up bonus. This is a large quantity of points you ll get from a new credit card if you spend a certain amount on that card within a specified period of time often the first three months. The spending requirement could be anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the card. Whatever the spending requirement, you ll need to reach it within a specified amount of time. Otherwise, your signup bonus is gone forever. Get your signup bonus more quickly with these 30 tips. 1. Insurance. Pay your car, homeowners, medical, or renter s insurance using a credit card. If you are on a monthly plan, considering paying in advance for a few extra months, provided you can pay off your credit card bill at the end of every month. 2. Cell Phone/Cable/Internet. You can usually pay for your cell phone, cable, and internet bill using a credit card. You may be able to pre-pay your cell phone, cable, or internet bill via a credit card. Make sure payments are paid in full at the end of each billing cycle. 3. Dining. Pay for all your dining expenses using a credit card. 4. Groceries. Pay for all your groceries using a credit card. If you regularly buy groceries, consider buying grocery store gift cards and use them to buy your groceries in future months. Buying gift cards at grocery stores usually count as grocery store purchases. This helps when you get 5X points at grocery stores. 5. Netflix. Pay for your Netflix subscription using a credit card.

6. Gas. Use your new credit card 7. Gym Memberships. Use your credit card. 8. Car Repairs. Use your credit card 9. Toll Transponders. If you have an automated toll transponder in your car (EZ-Pass, I-Pass, K-Tag, FastTrak etc ) you may be able to use your credit card to load money to your toll account. 10. Business Travel. If you travel on business, you may be able to charge expenses to your personal credit card and then claim reimbursement from your employer. 11. FSA Account. If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you likely get a debit card with which to make your medical expense payments (co-pays, prescriptions etc.) In most cases, you can pay for your FSA-approved expenses with a regular credit card and submit a request for reimbursement. 12. Vision Insurance. If you have vision insurance, you may be able to buy contact lenses online or from a vision provider with your credit card and submit a request for reimbursement. 13. Contractor Payment and Supplies. Ask your contractor if you get a discount for payment by cash (if you can t pay by credit card). If there is a cash discount, ask if you can get the cash discount if you pay in American Express Gift cards. 14. Babysitter, House Cleaner, Pet Sitters, Handy-women(ormen), Yard Work Providers. Ask your baby-sitter, maids, pet sitters, handy(wo)men and yard work providers if he or she will accept gift cards instead of cash.

15. Reimbursement for Purchases. Consider paying your close friend s and family member s expenses by using your credit card. Make sure they write a check or give you cash at moment of purchase. Use your best judgment with this method. For example, purchase your Uncle s new home gym equipment on your credit card, and ask him to write you a check or give you cash. 16. Wedding Expenses. Ask the vendors if you can pay the deposit and wedding expenses with your credit card. 17. Splitting Payments. Most shops will let you use multiple credit cards for one transaction. For example, if you are buying a $2,000 refrigerator, you can ask the cashier to charge $1300 on your Visa credit card (to complete the exact minimum spending required if you had only $1300 left to spend on that card) and $700 on your American Express credit card. 18. American Express Gift Cards. You can buy American Express gift cards from various websites and get a 1.6% rebate. American Express ships the gift card to you in 2 days ($8 fee), and you can usually avoid paying fees to buy the gift card with a promotional code. Beware of cash advance fees before trying this method. 19. Staples. You can buy $300 PIN-enabled Visa gift cards online at Staples.com and load them to your AMEX Bluebird or Serve account. 20. Store Gift Cards. Stock up on your gift cards to your favorite stores. Consider using your credit card to buy gift cards for that location. You ll get closer to your minimum spending requirement, and you can use the gift cards for purchases you d make anyway.

For example, if you spend $100 a week at your local grocery store,, you will spend over $1,000 within three months. You can use your credit card to buy a $1,000 grocery store gift card, then use the gift card for your shopping. 21. Holiday and Birthday Gifts. Consider buying your holiday and birthday gifts in advance. Stock up on either store gift cards or American Express gift cards that you plan to use at those specific stores. 22. Charitable Contributions. Many people make donations to charities. Consider making your donation with using your new credit card. 23. Religious Contributions. Perhaps you could make your regular religious contributions (church, temple, mosque etc ) via credit card 24. Plastiq. Use Plastiq to pay loans, rent, mortgage, utilities, or other bills with your credit card. They charge a flat 2.5% fee, but sometimes have promotions with lower rates. Plastiq.com 25. Mortgage and Car Payments. Tio.com allows you to pay your mortgage via credit card (Visa, MasterCard & Discover, but currently NOT American Express) for a fee 26. Utility Payments. You can pay for utilities, such as, water and electricity by using a credit card 27. College Tuition. Many colleges will let you pay for all or part of the tuition and housing costs with a credit card.

28. Student Loans. Tio.com lets you pay your student loan payments via a credit card for a fee (Visa, MasterCard & Discover, but currently NOT American Express). You may be able to use a credit card, for a fee, directly through your loan provider. 29. Property taxes. You might be able to pay your property taxes with a credit card for a fee either directly through your county or through a 3rd party service provider, such as, OfficialPayments.com. 30. U.S.A. Taxes. You may be able to pay your Federal Income taxes with a credit card for a fee. The IRS maintains a list of tax payment service providers on their website. www.irs.gov/uac/pay-taxes-by-credit-or-debit-card How To Pay Rent With Your Credit Card Landlords accept all different types of payments, but rarely accept credit cards. The majority of landlords will accept money orders though. What is a money order? A money order is a certificate, usually issued by banking institutions, that allows the stated payee to receive cash on-demand. Its basically a check that anyone can deposit in their

bank account. If you pay your landlord with a personal check, a money order is basically the same thing. Check with your landlord to see if he/she accepts money orders. How To Purchase A Money Order With A Credit Card Unfortunately, credit cards can t be used to directly purchase money orders. We have to take one additional step. To keep things simple, I will explain the Walmart Method. First Step: Purchase The RIGHT Gift Card Go to Walmart and head over to the gift card rack. You will see an array of gift cards like the picture below.

Its important to buy the right gift card. If you purchase the wrong gift card, then none of this will work. The RIGHT gift card to purchase, is the one featured in the picture below. The gift card must be a Walmart brand. You can tell it is a Walmart brand by the Walmart logo in the bottom right corner of the package.

First, I recommend doing a small experiment to be comfortable with the process before scaling up. With your credit card, buy the gift card pictured above for a minimum of $25. The card costs $4.94, and is $29.94 total. Once purchased, remove the card from the wrapping. Second Step: Purchase A Money Order With The Gift Card With your gift card out of the package, walk over to the money center in the front section of Walmart. Say you want to purchase a money order of $24.30 with your debit card. A money order costs $.70. Keep in mind, some clerks may not let you buy the money order if they know its with a gift card. Its not illegal or anything like that and can NOT get you in trouble. With my experience, 90% of the clerks don t care and 10% do. To have everything go smooth, its best the clerk doesn t know it is a gift card. I usually keep mine out of sight until I swipe. When the clerk says its time to pay, swipe your gift card. The key pad will ask if you want cash back, press no.

The key pad will then ask for your pin number, put the last 4 digits of the gift card number. That s it! Experiment completed. You now know which gift card to purchase and how to buy a money order with the gift card. The clerk will then print out the money order and your receipt. You now have a $24.30 money order. Do whatever you want with it. Its easy to deposit the money order in your bank account and pay off your credit card for this experiment. Unfortunately, mobile deposit doesn t work with money orders. Scaling Up Obviously, $24.30 isn t going to cover your rent (back in the day it might have). When comfortable with this method, you can scale up to $1,000 using two gift cards at $500 each. Before purchasing two $500 gift cards at Walmart, call the number on the back of your credit card and let them know you will be making a big purchase. If you don t call your credit card company, your card might freeze at the register because of fraud protection.

When purchasing the $1,000 money order with the two gift cards, there is specific wording to use to prevent any confusion. Say I would like to purchase a $1,000 money order. Can you please split the $1,000 payments between two of my debit cards for $500 each. I will pay the 70 cents money order fee with cash. Have the 70 cents with you to pay at the end. I rarely have change and always hand the clerk a dollar. If you swipe the card and a little piece of paper prints out and and the clerk reads Debit not available, that means the clerk did not split the payments properly. Kindly ask if the 70 cent fee can be paid with cash and is separate from the two $500 debit card transactions. Once you have the $1,000 money order, you can pay your rent or even deposit it in your account to write a personal check to your landlord. With this method, it will cost you $10.68 for every $1,000 money order. That s about a 1% fee to pay your rent. The benefit of this method is you will be able to complete your minimum spending with ease for the credit card sign up bonus.
