God s Biblical Role in Our Finances Finances WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? God owns it all; He controls it all; and He promises to provide for your needs (food, clothing and shelter). All He asks for us to do is to be faithful stewards no matter how little or much we have. Protect Your Marriage and Experience Financial Freedom We must be one when it comes to our money & possessions The Reality of Financial Bondage for Today s Christian: God cares about your finances! Over 2,350 verses in the Bible deal with money: twice as many verses as those pertaining to faith and prayer combined. We live in uncertain times, and many are struggling but God is still great, and His promises are still true! I. Balanced You know where your money is going down to the penny. A written budget helps you plan ahead and analyze spending. Having a budget will help you cut back on impulse buying. Every couple needs a spending plan, no matter how much or how little you may have. Formula for Financial Freedom 80 10 10 Formula for Financial Bondage 110 0 0

Developing Your Spending Plan Step One: Track your expenses for at least 30 days (90 days is best, but ). Track down to the penny what you spend every day. Use the provided spreadsheet (prestonwoodfoundation.org). - Click on the Financial Freedom tab in the top left-hand corner, scroll down, and you will find financial tools. - At the end of 30 days, with expenses automatically totaled that month by the spreadsheet, proceed with step two. Step Two: Determine your monthly wages (net income after taxes). Input that number into the expense tracker spreadsheet. If your wages are not the same every month (e.g., a salesman on comp plans), determine an average monthly wage. Step Three: Determine which expenses do not occur each month (e.g., property taxes, clothing, tuition, vacations, etc.). Total these and divide that total by 12. Insert into monthly budget. Step Four: To solve the problem of spending more than you earn, you must either increase your income or decrease your expenditures. Make a plan to increase income or reduce expenses. You must execute that plan. Step Five: Review and DON T GIVE UP! Every area of the budget should be reviewed on a routine basis (expenses weekly). Continue to track trouble areas! There will be frustrations, but a budget is the only way to accumulate savings and help you pay or stay out of debt. This process helps husbands and wives communicate in an area that is usually a cause of tension and conflict.

Prayer Expense Tracking Tool Money Dates Select Your System II. Eliminate Cash Envelope System Pencil and Paper PC-based Budgeting Software Web Based Budgeting Software Hybrid System A century ago, debt was regarded as an earned privilege for a few. Today, debt is viewed as a right for all, and borrowing is an integral part of our lives. Savers > Spenders > Exceed Income > Debt What Scripture Says about Debt The actual debt is not sin, but sinful behaviors will lead to or create debt. - Envy, Pride, Greed, Gluttony, Lust God has nothing good to say about debt. Debt is to be repaid. - The wicked borrow and do not repay. Psalm 37:21 - Owe no man anything, but to love one another. Romans 13:8 - The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7

Eliminate Harmful Debt Debt extracts a physical toll. It increases stress, which contributes to mental, physical and emotional fatigue. It harms relationships. Many people raise their standard of living through debt, only to discover that the burden of debt controls their lifestyles. Credit Cards III. Be Credit cards are not inherently sinful, but they are very dangerous. Statistics show that people spend about 30 percent more when they use credit cards than when they use cash. In 2007, an average U.S. household was carrying $14,400 in credit card debt (a 650 percent increase from 1990). Day Late/Dollar Short: $52 million a day in late fees was charged by credit card companies during 2008. If you can t pay the monthly balances, you should strongly consider cutting up your card(s). It s too easy to spend money that you truly don t have. Credit cards make impulse buying easy. Return to the days of if you don t have the money to buy it, go without until you have saved for the purchase. The fundamental principle you need to practice to become a successful investor is spend less than you earn. Then, save and invest the difference over a long period of time. Four things of little strength, yet they are extremely wise: ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer. Proverbs 30:24 25 Saving is making provision for tomorrow; whereas, debt is presumption upon tomorrow. The Joseph Principle ~ 7 Years of Famine

How to Save 80/10/10 Rule When you receive income, the first check you write should be your gift to the Lord. The second check should be to yourself for savings. There is no biblical percentage or amount required to be saved; however, it is highly recommended that at least 10 percent be your goal. The key is start saving today. Two Types of Savings Savings: intended to fund long-term needs and goals such as retirement income. These funds typically should not be touched unless there is an extreme financial emergency. Savings: intended to be readily accessible for replacing household items, home repairs, cars, interruption of employment, etc. Financial experts recommend you establish the goal of saving the equivalent of three-to-six months of your income for this emergency fund. Minimum requirement is $1,000.

Important Principles of Saving Be a steady plodder. Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty. Proverbs 21:5 Understand the power of compound interest: Save, Invest & Give Contrast: IV. Giving God Compounding interest has been called the eighth wonder of the world! Society says spend all you make. However, if you should save, put your trust in your accumulated assets. Scripture says: The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets. Proverbs 21:20 The tithe needs to be part of your Family Spending Plan. Common Statements But I can t afford to tithe! God s Word is clear that the firstfruits of our labor are to go to Him: A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord. Leviticus 27:30 Then Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. Genesis 14:20 Instruct them to be generous and ready to share so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. 1 Timothy 6:18 19 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, How have we robbed you? In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the

test says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. Malachi 3:8 10 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. Proverbs 3:9 10 Faithful Steward Giving It is more blessed to give than receive. Jesus Christ (Acts 20:35) Giving with the proper attitude is critical! If giving is merely to a church, a ministry or a needy person, it is only charity. But if it is to the Lord, it becomes an act of worship! He who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully... you may have an abundance for every good deed. 2 Corinthians 9:6 8 The generous man will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered. Proverbs 11:25 This is not a prosperity message ; we re talking about an act of worship! More Important Facts on Tithing Don t be limited by 10 percent. Prayer is required to answer this question. You should belong to a local church, and the tithe should go there (the storehouse ). Additional gifts can go to other special ministries if you feel led by God. Tithe: Gross vs. Net? Three Biblical Reasons for Money 1. To care for one s own family and thus prevent them from being a burden to others (1 Timothy 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:11 12; 2 Thessalonians 3:6 15). 2. To help those in need especially the church (Proverbs 19:17; Romans 15:25 27; Galatians 6:7 10). 3. To support and encourage the work of the Gospel on a local, regional and global basis (1 Corinthians 16:1 3; Philippians 4:14 19; 1 Timothy 5:17 18). For Those Who are Struggling Our God is a God of restoration! Jesus looked at them and said, With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God. Mark 10:27 Well done, good and faithful servant you were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things, enter into the joy of your master. Matthew 25:21

Ten Principles to Realize True Financial Freedom 1) Understand that God Cares about Your Finances 2 Chronicles 29:11 12 There are more than 2,300 verses in the Bible that deal with our money and possessions. Why? Because God knew this was going to be such a big issue for His people. 2) Have a Balanced Spending Plan Luke 16:11 a. Track where your money is going down to the penny. b. Develop a monthly spending plan/budget and eliminate wasteful impulse spending. 3) Eliminate Harmful Debt Romans 13:8 a. Credit cards are not sinful, but they are very dangerous. Don t fall into the buy now, pay later trap! b. Get into the habit of paying cash only. If you don t have the cash, don t buy it. If you can t pay off your credit card balances in full, tear up the cards and go to a cash-only system. c. Understand the difference between a want versus a need. 4) Be a Saver Proverbs 21:5 a. Be a saver, not a spender. Saving is the new spending. b. Build short-term (six month s worth of living expenses for unbudgeted items) and long-term (retirement) savings. c. Understand the power of compound interest (principle, interest rate, and time). d. Start today! 5) Give God What Is Rightfully His: The Tithe Leviticus 27:30, Genesis 14:20 a. Bring the first fruits of our labor to the storehouse (the local church). b. Giving with a cheerful heart is an act of worship (Acts 20:35, Proverbs 3:9 10). c. Don t rob God (Malachi 3:8 9). d. God says to test Him in this area and He will pour down a blessing until there is no more need (Malachi 3:10). e. Understand the concept of New Testament grace giving. 6) Be a Faithful Steward Psalm 8:6 a. The world says that financial success is having the biggest, brightest and newest. God defines financial success as no matter how little or how much you have being a faithful steward (a good manager not wasteful; having integrity in all dealings; an abundant/cheerful giver). b. Pay your bills on time. c. Your credit score is important. How do I repair or improve this score?

7) Pray Righteous Prayer over Your Finances Philippians 4:19 a. Understand the five elements of righteous prayer. b. Ask for wisdom and direction in spending and giving (beyond the tithe). c. Give God a chance to provide before you race off and buy on credit. 8) Learn to Be Content Philippians 4:11 13 a. Contentment is mentioned seven times in the Bible; six of those times have to do with money and possessions. b. Be content no matter how little or much that you have (apostle Paul). 9) Have a Biblical Eternal View When It Comes to Your Money and Possessions Mark 8:36 a. Our time on earth is short, especially when you compare it to eternity. b. Jeremiah, what do you see? (Jeremiah 1:11, 13) c. Invest your money and possessions in a manner that benefits eternity and God s kingdom as opposed to a fleeting temporary worldly kingdom. d. Understand the (biblically) appropriate use for our money and possessions: i. To care for one s own family and thus prevent them from becoming a burden to others (1 Timothy 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:11 12; 3:6 15) ii. To help those in need, especially the Church (Proverbs 19:17; Romans 15:25 27; Galatians 6:7 10) iii. To encourage and support the work of the Gospel both at home and around the world (1 Corinthians 16:1 3; Philippians 4:14 19; 1 Timothy 5:17 18) 10) Understanding God s Definition of Prosperity Psalm 35:27 a. The Lord delights in the prosperity of His servant but this doesn t always mean material blessings. God s definition of prosperity is far greater than the world s definition. b. Two schools of thought c. Trials of life (James 1) d. Why do some prosper and others seem to struggle?
