The High Cost of getting laid low Imagine finding out you have cancer, and then not being able to afford the treatments or medications to help fight the disease. Over 11 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with cancer and it is one of the five most costly medical conditions. This forces many patients to make decisions about their health care and cancer treatment based on finances, not on what is best for their health. 1 Cancer patients are 2½ times more likely to declare bankruptcy as healthy people. Those who do declare bankruptcy are 80% more likely to die from the disease than other cancer patients. 2 1. Dr. Richy Agajanian, M.D. Cancer Patients: Going Broke to Stay Alive www.agingcare.com 2. AARP, The High Cost of Cancer Treatment www.aarp.org

The High Cost of getting laid low Getting the bill for a heart attack or stroke is enough to give you another heart attack or stroke The average cost of treating a heart attack is $18,200. At some emergency rooms, the total tab could be $100,000 or more. 1 1. Money How to Protect Your Heart Health and Save Big on Medical Costs www.time.com

The High Cost of getting laid low When serious illness strikes, it can have a double effect on finances. $$$ Medical Expenses Income $$$ Not only do medical expenses go up; household income may go down due to the inability of the individual to work, or when a family member needs to take time off to care for them.
