Swatting Phonograms Phonograms are the building blocks of our language, and that s why they re such an integral part of the All About Reading and All About Spelling programs. This hands-on activity is an interactive way to help your child review phonograms, so just slip in a few minutes of play and watch the fun unfold! Assembly Instructions 1. Print pages 3-10 (color version) or 11-18 (black-and-white version). For best results, print the pages on cardstock or heavy paper. 2. Cut out the bug cards for the level you wish to play. Students in All About Reading Level 1 should use the Level 1 cards; Level 2 students can use either Level 1 or Level 2 cards; and so on. Or use the Phonogram Cards or Word Cards from behind the Review tab in your child s Reading Review Box. 3. Cut around the splat graphic on page 3, leaving enough white space to completely cover the head of a new (or clean!) flyswatter. Affix the splat to the head of the swatter using two pieces of clear contact paper, one on the front and one on the back. Trim the excess contact paper, leaving about ½ of contact paper around the edges. How to Play 1. Mix up the cards and arrange a selection of them on the table with the illustrations facing up. 2. Say the name and/or sound of one of the phonogram or word cards and have your child swat that card with his swatter. 3. Continue until all the cards have been swatted.
