Introduction The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation offers you a simple yet powerful way to shape the future of our sisterhood endowed funds. As a donor, a host of options are available to help you realize your philanthropic goals and the future philanthropic goals of your family. Your fund can be as general or as specific as you like. Whether you want to ensure the organizational success of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation or you would rather help an undergraduate sister gain access to leadership training and development, we have a fund to meet your needs. You can name your fund after yourself, your spouse, a sister or a chapter. It is also possible to give anonymously. This booklet will guide you through the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation s endowed funds policies and procedures and will introduce you to the fund opportunities. The four areas in which endowed funds may be established are explained in detail later in this workbook and include the following: Organizational investment funds Poise and purpose funds Member assistance funds Academic scholarship funds Included later in this packet is a worksheet. This worksheet will serve as a tool to assist you and the Foundation staff in outlining the purpose and restrictions of your fund and will be used to construct an endowed fund agreement between you and the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation. Creating a fund is simple and the experienced staff of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation is available to lead you through every step of the process. Please contact the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation at (317) 713-1924 or fndstaff@alphasigmaalpha.org for more information. Thank you for your consideration of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation. It is our priority and fundamental purpose to make your generous support of Alpha Sigma Alpha meaningful and enjoyable. We look forward to working with you in order to make a real difference in the lives of our sisters.

Endowed funds policies The Foundation may accept permanently endowed funds established by individual donors, active chapters, alumnae chapters and other appropriate donors, as long as such funds are established for charitable and educational purposes within the purposes of the Foundation and on the terms and conditions of this policy. The minimum principal amount of any such fund is $25,000 for a donor restricted (named) fund. The Foundation will accept lesser amounts toward these goals with the understanding that it will hold these contributions, as temporarily restricted funds, for a period of five (5) years only. If the full minimum amount is not received at the end of five (5) years, the funds will become unrestricted funds of the Foundation. All administrative criteria established by the donor for the endowed fund require approval of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation Board of Trustees. The income only from these permanently endowed funds will be accumulated in a temporarily restricted fund. Investment income is comprised of interest, dividends, realized gains and losses, unrealized gains and losses and investment advisor fees. For funds that have not yet reached the minimum principal amount, income earned is deposited into the Foundation s unrestricted fund. Income earned on a permanently restricted fund that has reached the minimum is credited to that fund s temporarily restricted account annually, beginning with the first fiscal year subsequent that event. The payout percentage to be applied to the endowed funds available each year is 5%. The amount is based on a three-year, year-end average of the investment fund s total market value. A management fee of 2% will be charged annually at the end of the fiscal year on the average balance of a permanently restricted fund account. This management fee will reduce the temporarily restricted fund associated with the permanently restricted (endowed) fund. If in the opinion of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation Board of Trustees, all or part of the funds cannot be applied in strict conformance with the purposes previously stated, the board may use these funds for other appropriate purposes as nearly aligned to the original intent of the donor as good conscience and need dictate. Nothing in this policy shall be interpreted to affect the right and responsibility of the board, in their sole discretion, to decline to accept such funds, for any reason that the board may regard as in the best interests of the Foundation. Costs associated with establishing a new endowed fund will be recovered through a one-time fee, over and above the minimum principal amount, equal to 5% of the minimum principal amount required to the fund ($1,250). This fee will be due at the inception of the establishment of the endowed fund and would also qualify as a taxdeductible contribution. Excerpt from the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation Policy Manual

Organizational investment funds DESCRIPTION: EXAMPLE A: EXAMPLE B: Organizational investment funds support the operations of the Foundation and all of its educational and charitable purposes and commitments. Karla has generously supported the mission of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation for many years through her gifts to the annual sisterhood appeal. She is in a position where she can leave a sizable gift to the Foundation and is interested in establishing an endowed fund. Because Karla s Alpha Sigma Alpha interests are diverse and she is familiar with the Foundation s need for financial flexibility, she chose to establish the Karla Smith Miller Fund, an organizational investment fund. She is excited to leave a lasting legacy to her beloved sorority, while at the same time giving the Foundation maximum flexibility to meet the needs of the organization with this unrestricted endowment. The Xi Pi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was installed 25 years ago this year. In recognition of their silver anniversary and the support their members have received from the Foundation over the years, the chapter has elected to establish the Xi Pi Chapter Fund, an organizational investment fund. This fund will be used to meet the operational needs of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation, allowing other funds to be used for scholarships and educational programming needs.

Poise and purpose funds DESCRIPTION: Poise and purpose funds are established by donors for member development. Awards are made directly to individual collegiate chapters, alumnae chapters, collegiate members, alumnae members and/or Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority to support the mission of the Foundation. EXAMPLE A: Motivated by altruistic as well as financial concerns, Christine Breck and her husband, Charlie, wanted to establish an endowed fund that would support the leadership development of Alpha Sigma Alpha members. After much discussion, the Breck s chose to donate several thousand dollars worth of stock to establish the Charlie and Christine Breck Fund. This poise and purpose fund helps to support the leadership programs of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, such as District Day, the national convention and leadership conference, the Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institute and volunteer training. EXAMPLE B: Alpha Sigma Alpha s summer leadership programs have become a highlight for the undergraduate members of Pi Gamma Chapter. Each year, the chapter budgets to send as many members as possible to the Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institute or national convention and leadership conference. Wanting to provide future Pi Gamma sisters with the same opportunities, the chapter has elected to establish the Pi Gamma Chapter Leadership Fund, a poise and purpose fund. This creative fund will provide scholarships to Pi Gamma sisters to attend the sorority s leadership programs. EXAMPLE C: Judy White and her husband, Jack, met when she was traveling as an Alpha Sigma Alpha leadership consultant. When they retired, they considered what to do with their life savings. They wanted to explore options to be philanthropic within Alpha Sigma Alpha. The White s made a provision in their will to establish the White Family Fund. This poise and purpose fund will be used to fund the educational portion of the Alpha Sigma Alpha leadership consultant program.

Member assistance funds DESCRIPTION: EXAMPLE A: EXAMPLE B: Member assistance funds are used to support needy and deserving alumnae or collegiate members who are aged, disabled or are experiencing an unforeseen financial emergency and have a specific financial need at this time in their life. Alice Oliver wanted to find a meaningful way to memorialize her daughter, Lisa. Alice chose to establish the Lisa Oliver Fund in recognition of Lisa s lifelong passion of nursing and her love for Alpha Sigma Alphas. The income from this member assistance fund can be used to support Alpha Sigma Alphas who have experienced a major medical, surgical or hospital expense or need special equipment such as a wheelchair, orthopedic mattress or other equipment. The alumnae of Chi Theta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha, a closed chapter, wanted to create a lasting legacy for the chapter, celebrating its rich history and preserving the generous spirit of the chapter. Together, the Chi Theta Chapter alumnae have chosen to fund the Chi Theta Chapter Member Assistance Fund. This fund will support Alpha Sigma Alphas and their families who are victims of disasters such as floods, tornadoes or fires.

Academic scholarship funds DESCRIPTION: Academic scholarship funds support the educational goals of undergraduate and graduate students. These merit-based scholarships are awarded by the scholarship task force based upon performance in three categories: academic excellence, leadership and campus/community involvement. EXAMPLE A: Edith McGowan is a retired university professor and an Alpha Sigma Alpha chapter advisor. She is celebrating her 40th year of membership in our sisterhood and wants to find a way to give back to the organization that has given her so much. Knowing the increasing costs of a college education, Edith has decided to establish the Ruth Crosby Scholarship Fund in honor of her sorority sister, Ruth Crosby. This scholarship fund will be used to support the educational goals of an Alpha Sigma Alpha business major each year. EXAMPLE B: Tracy Kortman and her husband, Jack, wanted to take advantage of the matching gift program at Tracy s place of employment. They both have outstanding student loans and understand the need for financial aid. With a one-to-one match from Tracy s employer, the Kortman s were able to create the Kortman Family Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund will provide one academic scholarship each year for a deserving undergraduate member of Tracy s collegiate chapter.
