The recent effort in pushing massive infrastructure project has induced positive sentiments in the sector. The significant policy reforms in coal, gas, infrastructure and power sector is providing significant boost to the sector's future outlook. Infrastructure remains an important pillar of India growth story and we have strong conviction of its come back in near future. Sector has been under pressure since last few years due to multiple factors. We expect the sector to outperform in the coming times. 's Comment: The scheme will try to invest in emerging themes in the next few years and play it through a blend of mid-cap and large cap stocks. For example, the Indian government's ambitious target of doubling farm income by 2022 should benefit stocks in the rural theme. Similarly, GST will lead to formalisation of economy and benefit sectors where the share of unorganised players is higher. Again, government's 'Housing for All' project will benefit cement, building material players and Housing Finance companies. The scheme will try to construct a portfolio in-and-around such emerging themes. The sustained regulatory change and positive policy frame work coupled with economic recovery should prove to be tailwind for the stocks in the BFSI sector. The Indian government's ambitious target of doubling farm income by 2022 should benefit stocks in the rural theme. Increase in weight in the cyclical commodity sector is tactical in nature. TAURUS DISCOVERY FUND - (AN OPEN-ENDED EQUITY FUND WITH MID CAP AND SMALL CAP FOCUS) The primary objective of the Scheme is to identify and select low priced stocks through price discovery mechanism, which would broadly include: To capitalise on available opportunity on growth potential offered by undervalued stocks, especially in the midcap and smallcap space. Such stocks being low priced and if dividend paying, decent dividend yield will give desired cushion in the volatile capital market. Many of such cases where investment will be made may be turnaround cases, therefore, greater potential for improvement in NAV. Mr. Prasanna Pathak (w.e.f. We have positioned our portfolio across these themes and companies that will have sustainable growth in coming years. We see larger upside to these ideas than some of the large well run efficient companies. TAURUS BANKING & FINANCIAL SERVICES FUND-(AN OPEN-ENDED SECTORAL EQUITY SCHEME) The primary objective of the Scheme is to generate capital appreciation through a portfolio that invests predominantly in equity and equity related instruments of Banking, Financial and Non Banking Financial Companies that form a part of the BFSI Sector. However, there is no assurance or guarantee that the objectives of the scheme will be realized and the scheme does not assure or guarantee any returns. Mr. Prasanna Pathak (w.e.f. 's Comment: Our overcall call has been inspired by the revival of the demand in the areas of specific focus by Government. We have added few more NBFC's to take advantage of this. We have maintained a positive bias on Private Banks given their resilience to generate profitability in stressed times. In PSU banks the exposure has been restricted to larger players with relatively improving asset quality outlook and faster prospects of stabilisation. 's Comment (Equity Schemes): During the month, markets took a breather and ended lower on the back of SEBI circular on shell-companies and geo-political tensions. Nifty earnings disappointed once again with earning (Ex OMCS) rising only 0.7% in 1QFY18. Mid-caps and small caps however did better than expectations. RBI eased policy rates by 25bp on the back of inflation undershooting its forecasts and falling below 2%, while also acknowledging growth related risks. Going ahead, the markets are likely to see some consolidation as valuations look stretched, and earnings growth is yet to fructify. Global geopolitical tensions and the impending withdrawal of quantitative easing, is also likely to weigh in on the market. Strong domestic flows from mutual funds will likely provide the floor, even as FPIs continue to pull out money. Markets will keenly watch commentary from companies on recovery post GST to gauge if earnings downgrades are warranted. 's Comment (Debt Schemes): August began with the monetary policy committee (of RBI) reducing the benchmark policy interest rate (the repo rate) by 0.25% to 6%. However, the committee also reiterated that their policy stance remains "neutral". August has also been a month heavy on data releases. Some of the significant ones are listed (and discussed briefly) below: India's fiscal deficit for the first quarter (April - June) of the financial year stood at approx. 4.40 lakh crores. This is about 80% of the full year fiscal deficit. The quarterly fiscal deficit number indicates a significant front loading of government expenditure in order to boost growth. This should reflect in healthy GDP numbers for the first quarter. The second volume of the Economic Survey was unveiled by the Chief Economic Adviser last week. It has come out with a pessimistic view on growth forecast. It has indicated a downward risk to the estimated growth range of 6.75%-7.5% for 2017-18. The survey also noted that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had overestimated the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation by more than 1% in six of the last fourteen quarters. The survey expects CPI based inflation to be below 4% by March this fiscal. The survey lists appreciation of rupee, farm loan waivers, rising financial stress in the power and telecom sector and transition issues arising from the implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) as challenges. Growth in the index of industrial production (IIP) came in at -0.1% (negative 0.1%) for the month of June. This reduction comes at the back of the large scale de-stocking exercise witnessed across industries due to the impending implementation of GST. Retail inflation based on CPI rose to 2.36% for July compared to 1.54% in June. This was led by an uptick in prices of food. Core CPI (ex- food and energy) also rose to 3.96% as compared to 3.85%, a month prior. Inflation based on wholesale prices also showed a sharp up move in July, The initial print came in at 1.88% as compared to 0.90% for the month of June. Trade deficit for the month of July came in at USD 11.45 bn. This compares with USD 7.76 bn trade deficit for the year ago. For the April to July period trade deficit came in at USD 51.5bn as compared to USD 27 bn for the same period a year ago. GDP figures for the first quarter of FY2018 (April-June 2017) were released at the end of August. GDP growth slipped sharply to 5.7% p.a. Expectations were for the growth to come in at 6.3% pa. The overhang effects of demonetization and destocking by economic agents in the wake of implementation of GST from July 2017 have been blamed for the relatively low GDP growth print. A relatively strong Indian Rupee may also have contributed by shrinking exports and boosting imports.
