Fall 2014 Dayton NAIFA-Dayton PO Box 974 Waynesville, OH 45068 Ph: 937-298-5558 Email: naifadayton@yahoo.com / www.naifa-dayton.org President s Message: I recently attended the NAIFA National Convention in San Diego, CA and came back with a stronger commitment to lead and serve our chapter members. Here are the main highlights: Advocacy is more important than ever: The NAIFA IFAPAC is the largest in our industry; surpassing many others like New York Life, and even USAA; The convention goal, $125K, but we surpassed with over $130K! Ohio had a 100% participation. It appears likely that a measure to create the National Association of Registered Agents and Brokers (NARAB) will become law. A NARAB amendment is attached to House and Senate legislation to reauthorize the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) backstop. The political consensus is that NARAB will pass along with TRIA. The bill is designed to establish a national licensing body through which agents would pay a fee to get a NARAB license in the state or states where they want to be licensed. Good news on the tax front is that the current tax-reform draft by Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., contains no provision to change rules regarding the tax-free inside buildup of life insurance. Other provisions, however, could cause life insurance taxes to rise. The No. 1 regulatory concern remains a uniform fiduciary rule for investment advisers and broker-dealers, although the SEC is divided on the issue. The Department of Labor, meanwhile, has again delayed its version of such a fiduciary standard, which NAIFA has criticized because of a lack of industry input. Those involve deferred acquisition costs which relate to commissions, insurers calculations of policy reserves, company-owned life insurance, changes to capital gains rates and elimination of Traditional IRAs and reduced contribution limits to 401Ks. New Emphasis on Professional Development LUTCF: In Association with the College for Financial Planning, The new Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) program will feature a sharply focused, timely curriculum to meet agents needs. The new program is going to be very complete, very robust. It really is designed to give a brand-new advisor what they need to be successful. Enrollment begins January 1 st 2015 Advisor 2020: The researchers at the GAMA Foundation developed the content for NAIFA s Advisor 2020; a workshop designed to help advisors see around the corner and into the future. The first study, The Market of the Future identifies economic, demographic and sociological factors that will transform what clients expect and what types of products and services they will need. The workshop also addresses new technologies, skills and capabilities, and challenges & opportunities for Advisors from a cultural and environmental perspective. The NAIFA board of directors met on Friday, September 12 th to develop a strategic plan to take NAIFA-Dayton to new heights. More information is forthcoming! NAIFA-Dayton Mentors Local College Students Page 3 On October 8th NAIFA Dayton held a panel discussion at Wright State University for their finance club. This event helped the students understand what a career in financial services entails. On the panel were NAIFA members Mick Lundy, Rafi Rodriguez, Andrew Platt, and Patrick Martinez. With advisors and agents of various ages and experience on the panel the discussion and questions from the students were invaluable. Most of the discussion was centered around NAIFA as an organization and how we are advocates for our clients and our business. We also discussed a career in the business and the many benefits of running a financial services practice in the Dayton area. The panel discussed the many opportunities available to them during and after college. With the success of the event we were invited back. We welcome any NAIFA advisor or agent willing to share their success in the business to be part of the upcoming Mentoring Socials. Elliot Boyd - NAIFA-Dayton is Looking for a Few Good Men and Women!!
