I t s hard to understand the unique financial issues facing professional athletes, unless you have been there yourself. That s one of the things that make our team different. Before I was a professional wealth advisor, I pitched in the Chicago White Sox organization, making it to the Major Leagues in 1991. Early in my career, I took off-season jobs at KPMG and Merrill Lynch, where I learned financial planning. Teammates became my first clients, and when they started signing big contracts, I helped them create plans designed to protect what they earned. Two decades later, we are still exclusively focused on the financial needs of professional athletes. My partner, Jose Marrujo, and I have worked with over 100 active and retired players and numerous front office executives. We have kept pace with the increasingly sophisticated financial needs of professional athletes. We know how the NHL Pension and Healthcare Plans affect our clients both during and after their careers. We are set up to make your life easier off the ice so you can concentrate on what you have to do on it. In other words, we are set up to provide exactly the kind of services and experience I would have wanted for myself. As a professional athlete, you have enough fans that want to talk about your exploits. That s not who we are. We are professional wealth advisors who can speak your language and provide the objective, independent service and advice you need to help reach your goals. We look forward to speaking with you, thomas kent drees, executive director 3
Wealth Management and the Professional Athlete Under any circumstances, wealth management requires knowledge, experience and insight. It involves comprehensive planning and a rigorous investment discipline. It demands long-range thinking from a close-knit team of respected professionals. At the Drees Marrujo Group, we combine these essential qualities with faithful adherence to each client s preferences, beliefs and values. When the client is a professional athlete, the stakes are raised. The peak earning years are shorter and the time to live off of those earnings is extended. Success on the ice does not necessarily prepare you for the demands of managing your money off of it. We pride ourselves not only in helping our clients develop appropriate investment plans, but also in helping you understand the choices we are making on your behalf. Our goal is to help you stay in control of your financial life through your playing years, and through the decades beyond. Investment Planning for the Three Stages of Athletic Careers. We have no standard investment plan for our clients. Instead, we work with each one to understand their current circumstances and long-term goals. We then craft a customized investment plan tailored to their specific needs. That said, we have seen that most professional athletic careers pass through the same three phases. Our goal in forming your investment plan is to help you enjoy the financial benefits of each stage, while preparing you for the next:
Cash Management and Credit After 20 years of working with professional athletes, we have a solid understanding of what you need off the ice. We ll create cash flow projections for you, and set up the checking, web bill pay and credit card accounts you need to gain access to money wherever and whenever you need it. We ll help you secure mortgages and other sources of credit to buy a home and support your lifestyle. Our staff is on the phone with professional athletes every day, providing the services that simplify your life, whether that s resolving a problem with a credit card, or making sure that your team s payroll department is wiring money to the correct accounts. We ll help you manage your liabilities, and provide your CPA with well-organized tax reports. 1 2 3 1. In the preparatory years, you have been drafted and received a signing bonus. This may be more money than you have ever had to manage before, but the big contract is yet to come. At this stage, our focus is on laying a solid financial foundation for your future. We all think that our careers will last forever. At this stage, we want to help you create a plan that will provide supplemental income in your future in case it doesn t. 2. Once you have reached arbitration, or perhaps signed an extended contract, you are into your peak earnings years. At this point, we expand the focus to a broader range of wealth management issues. Investment, tax and estate planning issues become more complicated. At this stage, our planning is focused on helping you build an enduring financial legacy with the realistic potential to last for the rest of your life, and beyond. 3. Even Hall of Fame careers come to an end. When you hang up your skates, our planning process will refocus on cash flow. We will work to understand what you need to support your lifestyle, and focus your planning on attempts to generate that income on a sustainable basis. This is also the stage where we will reexamine your estate plans and longer-term legacy planning. Throughout all of the stages, we focus on the preservation of capital and safeguarding the nest egg our clients have put away. No matter what the game, defense wins championships.
