The company had a total AUM of 2,919.85 billion as of March 31, 2018 and operates as a joint venture between Housing development Finance Corporation Limited (HDFC) and Standard Life Investments Limited (SLI). Strength Consistent market leadership position in the Indian mutual fund industry: The AMC is a leader in the Indian mutual fund industry and most profitable asset Management Company in India in terms of net profits since FY2013. Its AUM has grown at a CAGR of 33.9% since FY2001. As of March 2018, the market share of total AUM was 13.7% and of actively managed equity-oriented AUM was 16.8%. Live Accounts increased from 4.94 million as of March 2013 to 8.10 million as of March 2018. The leading industry and financial position provides with a robust platform for growth and efficiencies of scale, and enhances capability of investing in the growth of physical and digital infrastructure, which would further access to a larger customer base, and provide improved customer experience. Trusted brand and strong parentage: The company benefits from the brand reputation of their promoters, HDFC and SLI. The brand HDFC gives it a unique advantage of being a trusted provider of financial services, and SLI provides access to international best practices, for operations and risk management. The strong parentage and trusted brand enhances appeal and provides confidence to customers. Superior and diversified product mix distributed through a multi-channel distribution network: The AMC offers a wide range of investment schemes across asset classes catering to various risk return profiles, many of which have recorded strong and consistent performance compared to industry benchmarks. The customers are serviced through an extensive multi-channel sales and distribution network comprising banks, national distributors and IFAs. The company has a pan-india network of 209 branches in over 200 cities. As of 31 March, 2018, the company had offered 133 schemes that were classified into 27 equity-oriented schemes, 98 debt schemes, three liquid schemes and five other schemes (including exchange-traded schemes and fund of fund schemes) which allowed to cater a wide range of customers. As of March 2018, the company has a sales and distribution team of 581 employees and a customer services team of 295 employees located across branches in India. The company has a strong online presence via digital platform for customers and distribution partners. For FY2018, approximately 14.4% of all transactions were through HDFC MFOnline and mobile applications. Electronic transactions grew at a CAGR of 46.2% from FY2015 to 2018. Electronic transactions formed 50.8% of all transactions in FY2018. Focus on individual customers and customer centric approach: With an individual investor focused strategy, the company has a customer base with a greater proportion of individual AUM in comparison to the overall Indian mutual fund industry. As of March 31, 2018, its MAAUM from individual customers accounted for 62.2% of its MAAUM compared to 51.4% in the mutual fund industry in India for the same period, according to CRISIL. The company built a strong monthly flow of funds through systematic transactions, while recorded monthly flows of Rs 1150 crore through 3.16 million systematic transactions in March 2018. The number of systematic transactions has increased from 1.48 million as of 1

March 2013 to 3.16 million as of March 2018. As of March 2018, 77.3% of systematic transactions at the time of registration had tenure of over five years and 64.2% of systematic transactions had tenure of over 10 years. Strategies Maintain strong investment performance: The endeavour of the company is to continue to deliver superior investment performance against benchmarks and peer groups over medium to long-term periods. Its investments are driven by fundamental research with a medium to long-term view. It believes that over time, stock prices reflect their intrinsic values. The key elements of its investment strategy include investment discipline, long-term focus, risk management and team approach coupled with talented individuals. Expand the reach and distribution channels: The company has expanded its physical presence from 141 branches as of March 31, 2014 to 210 branches as of March 31, 2018 and it aims to continue expanding its physical footprint consistent with the growing opportunity. It has expanded its reach in T-15 cities, both in terms of branches and personnel, and intends to continue evaluating opportunities and strengthening their physical presence further in T-15 cities. It currently has 150 branches in B-15 cities and will continue to expand its presence to deepen its geographical reach further. Along with opening new branches, the company also aims to increase the number of employees in its sales and distribution and customer services teams. Enhance product portfolio: It aims to offer need-based and customer-centric products that address the core needs of its diversified customer base. It typically exercises discipline in launching new funds and prefer to focus on growing its existing funds. However, it continuously seeks feedback from the investment team, distributor network and customers to cater to customer demands and market trends, which it utilizes to adjust existing products or launch new products. Invest in digital platforms to effectively leverage the growing digital space: The company believes that digital transformation is strategic and integral to their business, as it redefines standards in terms of meeting customer expectations and reducing costs. It aims to progress towards a digital model to meet its customers requirements by personalizing offerings, facilitatings easy on- boarding, ease in transacting and access to other relevant data through the digital platform. Through these initiatives, it expects its customer s user experience to improve, which will enable it to build customer loyalty. Risks A large portion of AUM is concentrated in a few schemes: As of March 2018, top six equityoriented schemes constituted 79.1% of total equity-oriented AUM and top six debt schemes constituted 65.5% of total debt AUM. The performance of these schemes has a significant impact on AUM and consequently revenue. Underperformance by any of these schemes may have a disproportionate adverse impact on the AUM and revenue. Dependence on third-party providers: The company relies on third-party providers in several areas of the operations and may have not full control over the services provided by them to either the company or the customers. Dependence on the brand name and reputation: The company s revenue, results of operation etc. are, to a certain extent, dependent on the strength of our brand and reputation as well as reputation of other HDFC group entities and Standard Life Investment group companies. They are exposed to the risk that litigation, misconduct, operational failure, negative publicity or press speculation could harm the brand and reputation. The regulatory environment is subject to change: Any regulatory changes or competitive pressure leading to reduction in fund management charges can affect revenues and profits adversely. Industry Overview: The mutual fund industry s revenue is expected to grow at CAGR of 25% to around 184 billion by Fiscal 2019. The major growth facilitators will be a pick-up in economic growth, growing investor 2

base, higher disposable income and investable surplus, increasing financial savings and government schemes focusing on increasing awareness, ease of investing, digitalisation, and perception of mutual funds as long-term wealth creators, and increasing geographical penetration. Commensurately, net profit is expected to grow around by Fiscal 2019. While the revenue growth will be driven by the growth in AUM, growing allocation to equity-oriented funds, which generally charge higher investment management fees (on actively managed equity funds) than other categories, will be a major contributor. Overall, the industry s profitability is expected to remain stable in the near term, supported by robust growth in AUM. It is expected that there will be a gradual decrease in the percentage of investment management fees charged by fund houses to manage the AUM, primarily owing to higher competition and tighter regulations. Rising competition will also drive increased spending by AMCs on marketing related activities. However, these would be offset by an improvement in employee efficiency. No change in pre and post issue EPS and Book Value as the company is not making fresh issue of capital. Outlook HDFC AMC enjoys trusted brand and strong parentage and thus has consistent market leadership position in the Indian Mutual Fund Industry. It had the highest share of net profits and total revenue of 18.8% and 13.5%, respectively, among asset management companies in India in FY17. However, a large portion of AUM is concentrated in a few schemes. The performance of these schemes has a significant impact on AUM and consequently revenue.
