Equity Daily MENA Equities GCC equity markets extended losses yesterday tracking declines in global equity markets on renewed concerns on Eurozone debt crisis. The sustained weakness in oil prices also remains a factor. The KWSE index (+0.5%) and the MSM index (+0.6%) were the only exceptions. Banking stocks led the UAE bourses lower with the DFM index losing -0.3% and the ADX index dropping -0.2%. In Dubai, Commercial Bank of Dubai and Dubai Islamic Bank dropped -4.9% and -1.6% respectively while in Abu Dhabi, First Gulf Bank and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank lost -0.8% and -0.7% respectively. The Tadawul (-0.8%) declined to close below the psychological level of 7,000. The heavyweight petrochemical and banking sector led the decline with a -0.8% and -0.5% drop. Daily 31 May 2012 The EGX 30 index ended flat, having risen +1.0% intraday, after the public prosecutor's statement that Hosni Mubarak's son will be tried for charges of market manipulation. EFG Hermes too gave up its intraday gains as others referred to trial included two board members and the joint chief executive officers of the bank. Global Equities US equities declined as housing data disappointed and on renewed concern over the Eurozone debt crisis. Research in Motion dropped -7.8% after reporting a surprise operating loss and hiring banks to advise on strategic options. Whirpool gained +0.5% after the US Commerce Department proposed duties of as much as 71% on large, residential washing machines made in South Korea. European equities declined sharply as there were fresh indications that the debt crisis is far from over as Italy had a weak bond auction and Spanish CDS widened to a new record. Commodity stocks led the declines with BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto dropping -2.5% and -4.1% respectively on weak copper prices and BP losing -2.1% as oil dropped to its lowest level since October 2011. Asian equities were trading weaker this morning tracking declines in the developed markets. The MSCI Asia Pacific index was trading -1.4% at the time of writing.
