Market Summary The equities market ended uptrends today as investors took to dip buying in most counters which dipped in previous session due to the heightened political uncertainty. As we have previously espoused, the trend reversal expected to garnered significant momentum in near term is however prolonged as both foreign and domestic investors become more apprehensive of the volatile political environment. As the listed companies, specifically the bellwether counters resume the publications of Full year 2018 financials this week, negative or less impressive returns might be punished by investors through sell offs stance while significant positive financial positions could result in less appreciable positive performance than projected if politicking continues to cloud the course of investment decision in Nigeria. In similar manner, positive sentiment was sustained in PRESCO, JAPAULOIL and ABCTRANS.?
On the contrary, profit taking stance dipped the share prices of DANGFLOUR, FIRSTALUM and STERLNBANK from precious gains while investors maintained selloffs in TRANSCORP, WEMABANK, MOBIL, UCAP, FBNH, UNIONDAC, FIDELITYBK, AIICO, FCMB and DANGCEM. Going forward, the total volume and value of stocks exchanged in 4,623 deals ended at 361.80million and N4.159billion apiece, representing 55.01% and 23.69% increase over the previous close; 233.42million and N3.63billion. Similarly, the benchmark index gained 0.67% to 32,406.18 while equities market cap gained N80.59billion to finish the session at N12.08trillion. To the technicals, Relative strength index(rsi) improved slightly to 64.22 from 61.84 while the Year-to-Date rose to 3.10% from 2.42% it printed yesterday. Review of Sectoral Performance Sectors mostly closed in the positive territory today as the jittery of election postponement dissipated. Banking sector index remained on top of the performers as its rose 2.97% due to price appreciation in ZENITHBANK 5.62%, UBA 4.58%, GUARANTY 3.29%, DIAMONDBNK 2.54% and ACCESS 1.59%. Furthermore, oil and gas sector trailed as its inched up 0.74% to 296.48 as a result of gains in JAPAULOIL 9.52% and OANDO 6.25%. However, consumer goods and insurance indexes rose slightly by about 20 basis points to end at 754.74 and 127.63 upon buying interest in DANGFLOUR 4.12%, HONYFLOUR 2.36%, UNILEVER 0.46%. On the flip side, industrial goods index declined -0.21% to end at 1,264.95 on the back of capital losses in FIRSTALUM -10.0% and DANGCEM -0.41%.
